Very very close.

Would you have got it if I'd said another of my favourite film of his stars 3 men whose TV work helped define 60s TV? And one for 70s TV? And Mr Doolittle too?

I know the film you mean with the defining 60s tv comment, but I think that would have been a far more difficult clue. I was close at least.

Boo for spoilers. I don't think I dare read the Scarlet Street review until I've seen the Renoir film.

If you've seen Scarlet Street than, technically, there isn't really that much spoiled as the story is effectively the same - just different slants, different nuances. I just thought I'd be as discrete as possible just in case. But the basic story and timeline? You won't be surprised.

I love Scarlet Street, I wrote a section of my dissertation on it.  I enjoy double Indemnity more, but SS is a better film.  Edward G. Robinson really was one of the best actors of the period.

I wouldn't quite agree on Double Indemnity - as you'll soon see (well, I say soon. By 2012 at the latest) but I certainly do on Edward G

Is the next film by the most awesome director ever?

Well, Leone didn't make any noir, so I mean the second most awesome then

I think, Miles, it is possible you've picked up on the part of the clue that refers to a film a little higher up? Possibly?

Rick - imagine giving away the top end of your list so soon!

Even those that don't must find it helpful when you tell us which reviews have been written

I don't know what we're going to do round here when you and Rawlinson finish and everyone gets bored of posting their decade lists.

Cheer?

In fairness, that doesn't apply to Rawl's list, which is unstintingly good. Or the decade lists.

I suppose you've twigged that Robots is at #2, then?

I have an idea, which I will not disclose
And if the film I had in mind is higher, all the better!

Unless you've changed the order of the list you sent for the top 1000 poll, I can guess your top 20.  And I won't spit venom at a certain entry either. Promise. Your list has inspired me to track down the films by a certain director who I hadn't seen much of in the past. Really good stuff.

Except for all the entries Elab doesn't comment on.  I noticed you were silent about Shadows, btw, E'.

I'm pretty sure I included it in my general slur on Cassavettes upthread though.

Is it too soon to say which of Rick's directors intrigued you?

Cheers for that, and thanks for the other kind comments. I've just penned the review for that film, incidentally, and the Huston one you like...

For those who can get satellite channels - there is a channel called Showcase - 216 on Sky - which seems to be showing Ulmer's Detour tonight at 10pm. Not a film you'll often see turning up on British TV.

Well, I guess everyone could promise not to watch it.

The next entry is imminent. Or slightly more imminent than I promised it was imminent last time. And on that note of my talent for punctuality, no-one mention the performance list to Swords, please.

I got it. I laughed. Rather too loudly. It's been a long day.

On the film front, being at uni more or less restricts me to whatever's on iPlayer. Legally Blonde has been a popular choice throughout my building
