Watched this the other day.

I really enjoyed the movie. It was filled with great performances and Frank Darabont created a great atmosphere. There is not much i can say about the ending that hasnt already been said. Just great.

However as what has been mentioned in a few posts the CGI let it down at times. For example

SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD

When you see the tentacles for the first time at the back of the store the poor CGI really took alot away from that scene.

Another slight gripe with that was if this monster was banging round the back of the store on this metal barrier why didnt it just go round the front and destroy the glass?

Anyway as mentioned i really enjoyed the movie but was let down at times with the CGI. Also in relation the poster above saying he was torn as to whether this was better than 'The Orphanage'? For me this doesnt come close to 'The Orphanage' as that film was virtually a masterpiece of moviemaking!

It's great to see a proper horror film, filled with capable actors and a talented director who clearly loves the source material. Darabont has allowed his cast do their job. There's no emo soundtrack, no cliched bad guys or dead gothic Asian broads looking for revenge; just a bunch of ravenous monsters and some terrified victims. Like a lot of genre films from smart directors there is subtext galore, most of it addressing stuff like fear mongering, and the war on terror; but this is primarily a tribute to old fashioned B-movies, with the shocks turned up to 11. Former action star Thomas Jane is excellent , while Marcia Gay Harden revels in playing the nutcase evangelist, hungry for power. Darabont meanwhile, manages to create as much tension inside the supermarket as he does when people are venturing outside - slowly immersing us in the horrific situation. This is a horror film with balls, and we haven't seen one of those for a long time.

Just brilliant through and through... tense, terrifying and what an ending...

Agree about Tom Jane, he was iffy but decent enough I think.... the effects were perfectly fine IMO and the MGH character was a nasty piece of work.

A terrifying, clever and tense piece of work.... Empire have got it 100% spot on here, I really wonder if the haters have seen something different

p.s did anyone else think something would happen after the credits, because of the noises of cars and helicopters during the credits, I thought something else might happen but it didn't

Went to the cinema this afternoon, wasn't showing at all at the Odeon. Drove on to a Vue, only showing was 11:30pm

I really enjoyed the mist. The film was quite scary and throughly enjoyable. The acting was superb and the effects, while ok at times, were decent. The ending was very depressing but the film was very good. The 2nd best film I've seen so far this year (Behind Cloverfield).

Not really much to add, but it's definitely one of the most enjoyable films I've seen at the flicks this year.

Tense and wasting little time in getting into the thick of things, Darabont's film draws you in an holds you there for the rest of the movie. I didn't see that ending coming and it's so refreshing to see a film such as this end on the note that it did.

I have to admit going into this movie I was perplexed not only was it based on a story by Steven King Thomas Jane had given up his role as Frank Castle in the Punisher sequel (hey we all have our vices) to play the lead . Thankfully my fears turned out to be unfounded, this film is fantastically suspensfull and incredibly sinister in tone. Marcia Gay Harden's turn as the religeous zealot Mrs. Carmody was flawless provoking an emotioal intensity reminiscent of Andy Robinsons Scorpio killer of Dirty Harry fame. This film has been criminally overlooked by american audiences and it's a real shame. look out for the Thing poster in Tom Janes painting studio at the start of the movie which I would guess say was one of if not thee primary influence on the films structure and execution. thank god someone still remembers how to make a good horror movie not just gore porn trash. Go see it or alternatively get it on region 1 import as i did it's available now

I absolutely agree, I knew from Empire's review to expect spiderous horrors in the shop next door, and that it had "a monster that could eat the Cloverfield beast for Breakfast". But that said, if I didn't know anything about it, I'd have never have seen it.

Reckon Cloverfield could easily take its legs with its superior agility then jump on it while its on the deck, biting it to bits.

And it's not like horror movies haven't depressed people before - see Night of The Living Dead or even Seven - but just because it's an unhappy ending doesn't automatically make it good.
MAJOR SPOILERS:
To be honest the way the army just suddenly appeared out of the mist and it just seemed to lift all of a sudden seemed kind of silly to me. I mean they had been driving for how long without a single sign of life anywhere and then all of a sudden an entire fucking army convoy is right behind them without them knowing. And this may seem like nitpicking but surely after making the break for it in the truck the first thing you'd do is look for some bloody petrol. As kenada_woo said they gave up just because they ran out of petrol which seems pretty lazy to me. It's just used as an excuse to stick on the depressing ending.
It's a shame as i was generally enjoying it despite the dodgy CGI and occasional strange jokey bits and unsubtle references to the war on terror. I thought the parts where Marcia Gay Hardens character had converted a lot of followers and began to turn on the rest were the most scary and thought if it had followed in that direction rather than the group escaping it might have worked better.

I dunno, I loved the way the army appeared without explanation almost like they're mopping the mist away. The whole film is set huddled up in that supermarket, we've no idea how the rest of the world (or even 2 miles from that store) is affected, if affected at all. That might have just been the end of its spread where the army were.

Also - feeling the whole world is covered in this mist and crawling with huge monsters, think I'd rather make sure I get a painless way out staring down the barrel of a gun. I'd be scared shitless driving through the stuff much less walking with my son. Not being eaten alive when I can eat a bullet.

It does depress, and you'd be right to say simply being despressing doesn't make it good, but in this case, for me it did. My head was wrecked for ages whiling thinking about it after watching it, not just because of its grim ending, but because I felt like I was lost in the mist in a world that's came to an end... I do like a bit of bleak every now and then.

Top marks from me. Let's a have follow up Darabont, set in Alton Towers.

The thing for me was Thomas Jane seemed to be prepared to take risks such as leaning out of the car to grab the gun when they were making the getaway so surely being someone who knows the area he would have had a couple of options of places to stop and try and fill up the tank. I mean they travelled along the road for ages without anything bothering them. Surely a 2 minute pit-stop would be something you would consider? Although I agree with you about the atmosphere when you thought that the mist was genuinely everywhere and that it was a sort of end-of-the-world situation. That was pretty bleak and unnerving. But then doesn't the ending undo that?
And what are people reading into the ending about the Bush administration? It must have went over my head. I just thought the religious nutters were the only reference to that kind of thing. What does the ending say - trust the army not God?

I didn't come across anything about the bush admin, where was that reflected on? I don't remember the bit where he turns up, tries to bottle the mist and lob it into Iran.

Whats Event Horizon doing on that list? I enjoy it but it pretty much steals from everywhere. The commentary is great because the producer keeps pointing it all out and Anderson keeps trying to move on to some other subject.

And to be honest I wasn't really concerned about the creature stuff. It was what was going on inside the shop that drew me in.

Well I was only pointing out the two catagory's in comparrison "Inventivenss" and "Creatures" which The Mist is nowhere near to being as good as IMO not comparing films.

The Relic - Probably the most underrated creature feature of the last 10 years up until The Host came on the scene. It has a great monster in it created by the late Stan Winston.

As for inventiveness -

Switchblade Romance - probably the most inventive slasher to come out in the past 5 years (slasher fans back this up) until Frontiers and Inisde came out.

Silent Hill - Again underrated in my book. Visually stunning and full of nightmarish scenes that uses its "fog" atmosphere to best effect and it religious cult theme to a better extent to pay off to its characters than the Mist with its ending.

Event Horizon - Same as above, visually striking, inventive haunting images and hasnt been topped for over 10 years because nobody's made a sci-fi horror in space for over a decade minus Pitch Black (another film I'd throw into the list). Its also got a growing fanbase.

Land Of The Dead - What Romero is famous for is delivering inventive action and gore which this had in spades (and what Diary Of The Dead just never had).

Shaun Of The Dead - As above, just clever and inventive no matter if its a comedy.

Arachnophobia - Ditto. Still has great tension more so than the spider-esque stuff in The Mist.

And I dont care about reviews honestly to prove a film is "good". If I did I would've missed most if not all horror films that are released or came out (I'm looking at you John Carpenter). And the fact Land, Switchblade Romance, Arachnophobia, Shaun Of the Dead all got equally if not better reviews than The Mist goes to show that dont mean much.

The Mist isnt a bad film, its just a non-starter with nothing new and just isnt fun to watch being that its all a bit pointless.

Er hang on mate....Switchblade Romance was good but it's not in any official capacity at all the most inventive slasher in the last five years.

I agree with everything else though....well except The Relic. I'd never even know what that monster looked like if it hadn't of been for my vinatge Fangoria!!!!

I thought iwas enjoyable, but horrendously flawed. Fuck knows why the had to personify the evil dimension into a man with his eyes cut out (who gradually just turns into some ridiculous fire lobing comic book baddy). God only knows why a sciencey warp drive would be built in a room designed lie a Hellraiser chamber. And did anyone else question that bit where a monster was running around, tryin to smash its way through a door, then the whole entity was just removed from the equasion like it never even happened?

That tiny seen where they're watching the video was fekking superb. They should have tried to make that last an hour, then we'd be in top 10 films of all time territory.

Where's the Official Inventive Slasher site? Didnt know things had to be official to be an opinion. I cant think of any slashers better than it for the pass 5 years (like I said up until Frontiers etc). But your knowledge exceeds mine at the subject. But its more inventive than anything horror wise in The Mist.

Whats Event Horizon doing on that list? I enjoy it but it pretty much steals from everywhere.

I thought iwas enjoyable, but horrendously flawed. Fuck knows why the had to personify the evil dimension into a man with his eyes cut out (who gradually just turns into some ridiculous fire lobing comic book baddy). God only knows why a sciencey warp drive would be built in a room designed lie a Hellraiser chamber. And did anyone else question that bit where a monster was running around, tryin to smash its way through a door, then the whole entity was just removed from the equasion like it never even happened?

That tiny seen where they're watching the video was fekking superb. They should have tried to make that last an hour, then we'd be in top 10 films of all time territory.

It wasnt evil personified, it was just showing the characters fears -- its why the last crew just wasted each other in a mass orgy, what they were seeing fucked them up. There were never any chambers in Hellraiser like that hyperdrive (they never had any budget to anything that elaborate lol) but it is hellraiser-esque. Also there wasnt a monster running round, it was the ship itself. It doesnt need an explanation, the ship went to another hell-like dimension and brought something back -- mainly a faceless evil where anything goes, the characters fears put a face to them. Weir just loves what it brought back and goes on a nutty spree to send the ship back there.

Still better than The Mist lol

It's amazing because it's shot in a way that's almost documentary. Not handheld, more like that TV cops. It's also inventive in the fact you've no idea what's out there. It isn't one beast, or one type of beast, and you've no idea what's gonna attack next (be it the size of a pigeon or the size of a football stadium. And yeah, the lunatic bible basher and her crazed manipulation of the situation was perfecto mundo.

I tried watching it again last night but fell asleep halfway through (...eerrr, I'll buy the DVD when it comes out, I promise!) due to drunken knackeredness. The actual mist itself is wonderfully creepy and scary. The endins extremely dark... Event Horizon isn't even the same sport. But we're done with that film that even Fish himself said was a load of nonsense.

But if you want to know about proper horror, check out John Tucker Must Die on Sky Comedy (just realised it's on in the background). It'll haunt you for the rest of your life.
