This was my number one film whilst growing up. Brosnan's best performance, and an absolutly gripping movie!

I am rewatching this on NETFLIX at this very moment. Being a huge Brosnan / vulcanology enthusiast from an early age, DANTE'S PEAK was a favorite rental of mine during my formative years. I had doubts that it would hold up (as I've seen in recent years a number of lackluster Pierce Brosnan action films from the early 90s before he landed the Bond role), however this film is expertly constructed and well shot. It is formulaic in the extreme, but within that formula it's a rousing success and a fine example of gene filmmaking. Everyone in front of the camera gives it their all, and Brosnan in particular lends a lot of weight to the proceedings. If he takes this volcano seriously, what with his posh accent, then by god everyone else best pay attention. He surely knows what he's talking about.

PS I also can't help but love a movie where our main hero is haunted by a volcano related tragedy from his past. It's just so gloriously perfect.

EDIT: FUN FACT: I last saw this movie in 9th grade science class

I couldn't count the number of times my family and I watched this when I was growing up. It was just one of those movies that we all loved and never got tired of. To this day I could probably still quote every line!

I quite liked this as well! Brosnan is great in it and the scene (Spoiler ) involving the old lady sacrificing herself is quite hilarious. Great entertainment and certainly better than Volcano.

I want to punch that old lady every time I see this movie. Selfish stupid old bitch nearly gets her whole family killed.

Have to disagree I found Volcano to be a much better film.  For me Dante's Peak takes to long to get going.

not a bad film. I remember this and Volcano were released around the same time. Very corny movie, with some duff lines but entertaining enough. Damn this thread is old. On the subject of old threads... where is The Matrix appreciation thread?

Not seen Dante's Peak in a long time but I used to love it. Volcano's good too, but neither can match the brilliance of...

The only volcano film you'll ever need.

Me and my Mrs watched it on TV not too long ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it....although I was laughing out loud at some of the very 90's action! And hey, Linda Hamilton is in it! She is one bad mutha!

Same here. Silly old cow deserves to have her legs melted off.

Actually, I really rather like this movie. I'm a sucker for disaster flicks.

Plus Dante's Peak doesn't have that dreadful ending Volcano has, with the horridly ham-fisted anti-racism message - "Look at their faces... they all look the same!"

VOLCANO has some admirable effects and some good moments, but it's plagued with slack pacing and narrative sprawl, and a generally ridiculous cast of characters. DANTE'S PEAK is tightly plotted and is IMHO the better film.

Charles Hallahan's Wilhelm scream as he plunges to his death gets me every time. Almost as subtle as his head ripping itself off and sprouting legs.

But I'm definitely Team Brosnan rather than Team Lee Jones here, Dante's Peak is quality Hollywood trash.

I was psyched to notice the infamous Wilhelm Scream! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
