Now that its got a director, release date and lead, what does everyone think?
I'm trying to stay relatively positive about it, but so many unnecessary remakes, so many disappointments!?

 For once, I actually think that a remake could be a good idea. The original has looked dated for some time and the fact that it still has a relevant message beneath the gore and metallic exterior, means that simply updating the look could make for a great film.

That said, I have never heard of the Director and remakes rarely go anything but south.

 Unless it has anything new to satirise or indeed to say, then it's pointless. Seems a waste simply just to 'update' the character. Although it would be interesting to see what sort of design they can hammer out for the armour...boom boom. South is my zone of hedonistic but ephemeral pleasure. So it may be entertaining.

 I kinda like the guy they have for this, Joel Kinneman, it seems like a really odd casting choice that I just really like it. He's decent in The Killing and as he's not a huge star, they may stick to a classic design which covers most of his face - if I bigger name was attached, it's unlikely Murphy's face would be covered by the Robocop mask in full. I'm cautiously optomistic, and I'll look forward to seeing the first images of the suit later in the year.

Apart from 1 or 2 scenes I agree that it has held up well. ED209 will surely be a cgi creation and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Was it the characters stop motion that added to its disturbing menace? I'm sure the filmmakers will be looking towards Ironman for Robocop himself, although budgetary issues may come into play. As regards themes etc, I think now more than ever there is a wealth of targets for satire.

The ony way it's aged is the fact it's far more violent than anything else released. You're right, the nightclub scene is bad, as are some of the haircuts and clothes, but that's pretty synonymous with the decade it was set
I wouldn't mind a "reboot", but as it's one of the most quotable films of the 80's, it's going to be really hard to even come close to the awesomeness of the original.

I brought this up some time ago and was immediately shut down by pretty much everyone. Don't get me wrong: I like the original and some scenes are still great looking (Toxic man is and always will be fantastic) but the ED-209 is laughable.

An ultra gory update could be epic imo.

A few years after the release of the original I read a comic book "based on the motion picture". In that they had Robocop as quite agile, diving out of the way of ED-209 and such. I remember think it didn't look right. However looking back on the movie, I think that Murphy suffers from a "classic zombie" problem, in that if he came after you, you could simply run away! That said though, would audience accept a running, jumping, athletic Robocop?

I think he'll definitely be more agile, but I dont think they'll totally rid him of the basic robotic aesthetic movement he has in the original. In other words he's not going to be performing gymnastics any time soon! As I mentioned earlier I'm sure Ironman will be noted carefully so maybe something like Ironman...albeit Ironman with the need of a splash of WD40 perhaps!

That would be fine as long as the studio don't want to pitch the film at an Ironman type audience. I don't have anything against a movie rated 12 if its well made, but compromising a character just to bring in more money is never good

Oh no, of course not. A 12A Robocop? They tried that with 3 and look what happened!? The remake has to at least maintain the level of violence that the original had, and that's quite a lot actually!!

Dude, you shoud really get over the whole EX2 PG-13 thing, we get it you don't like it and BLOOD IS AWESOME!!!!! The original Robocop will always be there for you to watch regardless of whether the remake is good or not and hell it might encourage more people to check the original out and have thier minds blown by the awesome.

As for the remake, I like the director and if he can combine District 9 sci-fi with Elite Squad then it could be very good indeed.

No please don't, otherwise ED-209 will have to kill you in far less time than 15 seconds.

Onto serious matters. I think what Robocop can do differently is exploring the fusion of biology and technology and I suppose it can be a commentary on how we're increasingly more reliant on technology and using it as a crutch. Plus things such as wanting to cut down criminals and budgets (ergo police officers) by having a virtual one-man army. I think that was touched upon in the original film but it has robo legs I think. I think if it can offer some fresh satire (i.e. big executives enjoying exorbitant bonuses) rather than re-hash the original film's ideas then it can certainly gain an audience. As for the level of (expected) violence; yes the character suits a more gory approach because it's a reflection of the brutality which necessitated the development of Robocop. Still, too much of it without a decent script will just surrender the character to parody. Fine motor controls and a servo actuator when it comes to the scripting I think!

Wouldn't surprise me to be honest, but he seems like an interesting director and the choice of lead is good I think. Rumours abound that the forthcoming Dredd is a gritty violent affair so no reason why this shouldn't be either? Who would a tamed down Robocop be aimed at these days? Bit of cult movie at this stage. I wouldn't imagine a tamed down version would appeal to a present day younger audience unless its dramatically changed. At the very least cater to the people who grew up with the original...hopefully!

This is correct. 

To Answer Darth Bane's question, I would point to this film too.  It's on Youtube, just a few minutes long.  You have a robot, but it moves fluidily.  It looks good.
