Was it not you who liked the Shinkai, TRM? I am pretty limited in that area. Kon, Shinkai (although it's more the art I admire), Ghibli, Tekkonkinkreet. I can't think offhand of anything else (bit worried I've made a glaring omission!).

 I have only liked 5cm really from his. That was the first one where the look and feel of the film really blew me away. The rest of his just kind of blend into the look and story of quite a few modern anime. Outside of that there are a couple of the obvious Manga films like Akira/Vampire Hunter D/Blood/Ninja Scroll that I enjoy, but thats about it really. Everything else I have seen has been pretty poor really.

I was going to say I forgot Paranoia Agent - the only series I think I've liked. But, of course, that's Kon too.

I pretty much agree on Shinkai. The stories aren't great, but the visuals are fabulous.

A couple. Early world cinema, have you seen I Was Born, But... ? or Japanese Girls at the Harbour? Classic Hollywood, have you seen the Stewart/Mann western The Far Country? Watched it again recently, I'd forgot just how much I liked it. Horror - Who Can Kill a Child? (Or Would You Kill a Child? for my preferred translation) out on dvd next week.

The only one I have seen is Japanese Girls at the Harbour, which is a gorgeous film Any preference on which one you would like me to pick to add to the 5? The only Stewart western I have seen is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, so I really should see another! The other 2 both sound interesting though.

 Ok. Well on the assumption that you will nominate Who Can Kill A Child? for the HoF at some point, and I will probably watch some more Stewart westerns through free will, I will go for the Ozu

 I should say that I dont dislike Ozu. I have only seen Late Spring, which I enjoyed, but I am still a bit anxious about watching one of the great directors for pretty much the first time.

I think I have Good Morning (its in one of the Tartan releases, right?) Still, I assume the print would be better so it still sounds good.

 There really isnt any reason for it as I have had access to quite a few for a couple of years now, but its just the stuff I read about his style that really puts me off (even though I liked the one film I watched). Bergman is kind of the same actually.

Might you have picked up Good Morning from Film 4? It showed a couple of times when we were updated the Asian film discussion thread with films on that week. It often shows with The Only Son.

Do Hour of the Wolf next. A nice, easy watch. Or Cries and Whispers, it's a jolly, fun-filled side of Bergman.

Hey darko, nice list. I'm gonna recommend something really leftfield, The Spy in Black - a riveting old school, war spy thriller that I'm sure must have been an influence on the Diane Kruger / Michael Fassbender section of Inglourios Basterds. Its a really tense film and if your UK based then it's on Film4 quite regularly.

The first ones that come to mind:

Mean Creek - Eden Lake If you like movies that involve troubled kids.
Lost in Translation - Before sunrise/Before Sunset, Certified Copy, City lights,The shop around the corner . All movies about two people who meet their soulmates.
I see you are a fan of time travel movies. A couple come to mind. Such as Primer, Frequency, Timecrimes, The girl who leapt though time (anime)

Hopefully you haven't seen all of those.

Your list seems to indicate a tendency towards similar kinds of film - meditative, visual and tending to the surreal at the edges - Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Tarr, Bergman and South American mad buggers.

You are a Tarkovsky fan I see, have you seen The Return? It's by Zvyagintsev, who could be seen as a successor to the Russian great. It's also superb.

Songs has a more linked narrative but is in many ways quite similar. You, the Living is better though, IMO.

I'll go with another favourite- An Actor's Revenge, Kon Ichikawa. And perhaps some of his war films from the 50s might interest you.
