The Green Ray is absolutely Rohmer's best, but it's a good idea to get used to his work before going for the masterpieces

I'd only say that's true if the best films are more difficult, which I wouldn't really say is the case for the majority of Rohmer films.

They are difficult in the sense that Rohmer's style is the opposite of difficult and the talk talk talk may initially seem offputting. So I still say go for the recorded one.

Yes, it is. If rick doesn't enjoy it he's utterly soulless.

It was mentioned as a kind of joke, simply because I knew it was a film that Rick hadn't seen. But I still think he should watch it. Mwahahaha!

I thought of another one Olaf - Eureka (Aoyama, 2000). If you want to see reviews it was in the top 10 of both my and Rawlinson's 2000 lists.

just seen the above. Seen TMWFTE (missed out on my list in the end), haven't seen Eureka. It's been on my to-see list for a while though, will get round to it soon (I think the college library has a copy if I recall correctly).

Then sticking with the sci-fi how about Godard's Alphaville, a wild and wacky film not altogether successful but worth seeing.

That sounds more fun than watching De Palma's Scarface.

It is - I make that about 6 films the same? Interestingly it's all discovering or reevaluating old films - no new ones enter the frame.

Is there any kind of direction you'd like to see some recommendations from?

Yeah im only counting the 6 as well. I didnt realise it had changed quite that much

Just looking at why there are the changes. Psycho/The Apartment/Modern Times/Back to the Future/City Lights/Vertigo would have all been rewatches (and in the case of all apart from Back to the Future they jumped a massive amount up the list). The other new ones have all been new watches since the last list.

I was thinking the other day about which films from the last few years would place highly in a top 100 or so list, and I think Ponyo (top 30), Wall-E (50) and Black Swan (100 somewhere) are the most likely ones. Its just odd that nothing at the cinema ever seems to enter all that highly anymore.

Im actually not that particular about exploring a certain area, but either a horror, classic hollywood or early world cinema would be pretty great.

I'd like to nominate one of the forerunners of classic Hollywood. A bit of a cheat as the release is a double bill, but have you seen

Underworld (Von Sternberg, 1927)

or early world cinema

Le Jour se Leve (Carne, 1939) or (available for free on something like Mubi) The Housemaid (Kim, 1960)

3 great shots. I havent seen any of them  I know Jasiri used to go on about Underworld a lot, but it always seemed to be a pain to try and watch. Criterion seem to have fixed that though, so I will take that as the recommendation  (ill check the others out as well though!). Isnt Le jour se leve a Gabin film?

Did he? Excellent - I thought it was just me! It's in my top 100  (That said, it was Docks of New York I included in my visuals list - it's pretty amazing too). That Criterion was a must for me - I had a copy from an old laserdisc (I think) that was all but worn out and the only possible replacements I'd seen seemed ot be colourised.

It is a Gabin - I tossed a coin between this and Quai des Brumes.

Hmm. Might just go off on a wild card with you TRM. Seeing you have Metropolis, how about the anime film Armitage III - Polymatrix? It's a relatively good anime, second league but still worth a look. Has a nice bleak atmosphere to proceedings.

I had that recommended upthread and thought it was terrible - exactly the kind of anime I think of as 'typical', which nearly put me off the sub-genre as a whole. Even with Bryan Cranston doing a minor part on the dub!

Fortunately Gram also recommended Tekkonkinkreet - that was wonderful.

I should have checked, really.

I think Tekkonkinkreet is quite cheap now if you get the chance, it was a lovely surprise.

Yeah he used to always be going on about that and Arsenal. I think I will get the Criterion during the next sale on one of the American sites

To be honest im fairly similar to Elab when it comes to anime, and outside of Ghibli there hasnt really been much that has interested me. Can I put this one in the maybe pile? But feel free to go for wild card entries though!

Edit: Actually since Keifer does one of the voices ill move it into the list

Yeah it was one I checked out after it appeared on one of Rawls lists (I really have no idea which list). Good film
