The reason he has to climb the stairs is because the X cant be seen whilst standing on the floor.

To be honest I don't think I've ever spotted a mistake whilst watching a film. It's probably because I don't look out for them but when I'm aware of one
(after reading about it on the web) I wonder how I never spotted it.

I'm sure there was one in Lethal Weapon 3. Mel Gibson rides into a tunnel on a motorbike with shoes on and when he comes out the other side he has trainers on.

Really? Well that makes sense I suppose. But do you realise that's the only mistake I've ever spotted on my own and you've just ruined it for me? Thank you, Felix. Thank you very much.

HIM did have a point about the disappearing X though. They don't show a clear shot of the floor initially I think, but when he goes up the staircase the X is seen clearly. When Indy comes back down the X is less obvious (and not because you need to see it from above to see it in its entirety) it seems washed or rubbed out somehow. The missus pointed it out when we were watching it last week. At the time I discounted it by saying that it looked different cos the light was shining on it differently. Not sure now though...

Sweet weeping baby jebus.

Its only properly visible from above. Hence why Indy had to climb the stairs!! Its not an error!

Apropos Last Crusade:

In the second test, to 'walk in the footsteps of the name of God', Indy nearly falls when he mistakenly starts to spell "Jehovah" with a "J" instead of an "I". While it is true that the use of the letter "J" came about centuries after the first crusade, the word "Jehovah/Iehovah" -- or any other spelling -- was not in use then either! It was created by faulty scholarship at the time of the King James Version translation of texts into English. Hebrew texts refer to God with YHVH, which is never spoken aloud. Instead, Hebrew manuscripts insert the vowel pointing for "Adonai" -- "Lord" -- which is substituted when the text is spoken aloud. The Christian translators were unaware of this, and inserted the vowels with the consonants and unknowingly created "Jehovah" for their English text. So there are several centuries difference between the era of the First Crusade, when the three knight brothers lived and heard/read scripture, and the translation of the King James Version which created the word "Jehovah".

There is a few good ones in Gladiator, I remember seeing in one battle, a chariot slides sideways and then hits a wall. Just before it hits, a blanket lifts up and a large tank and some pipe fittings can be seen on the back of the chariot. Also after the battle at the begining, some bloke is walking around with jeans on.

One continuity error or plot hole that was so blatant it was laughable was in Lost World: Jurrasic Park. IMDB description is as follows:

"The ship carrying the tyrannosaur arrives in San Diego with the crew having all been killed. A severed arm is found holding the controls for the doors on the tyrannosaur's holding cell. When the ship arrives, the doors are trying to open, but are neither able to fully open nor fully close. Only when a dock worker hits the switch to open those doors does the tyrannosaur escape, which means the tyrannosaur itself could not have cause all this damage on board. This is due to a section of original script being left out, where Raptors get aboard the ship and cause all the massacre."

Makes you wonder at what point they said "Hey don't worry about it, they'll never notice".

I seldom ever notice if it's a good enough film, but a recent one i did see was in DIE HARD 4.0 when Bruce Willis is fighting the incredibly sexy Maggie Q.  Mid-way though the fight, her hair goes from loose to tied back in a pony tail.

Really noticeable when you're kicking lumps out of a bald guy!

Most people were probably bored and switched off at that point...

I remember watching a show years ago that was all about movie mistakes.  The best one was in Last Crusade where Indy goes up the stairs to look at the big X on the floor.  Behind Indy is a painted-on book case.

The Star Wars movies are littered with mistakes. In a new hope when the stormtroopers enter the room where R2D2 & C3PO are hiding one of the stormtroopers clearly whacks his head off the door. Same thing happens to Lando in Return of the Jedi at jabbas palace. Also in Empire strikes back at the scene where Vader tells luke he's his father if you watch carefully the dome section of vaders helmet is clearly not fastened properly and blows about. Theres loads more.

I don't want to incur some major Matrix hatred here, because I love it, but there are some *big* continuity errors/mistakes in the scene where Neo is in his cubicle at Metacortex!

When the scene starts, Neo is sitting and looking at a computer with a blank screen (maybe because you can't film a monitor and couldn't be bothered to do a composite later???); when the FedEx guy hands Neo the package, he goes to open it, and when they cut to the next shot, his hand isn't at the top of the envelope any more; and there's a hand with a gold watch on it on the filing cabinet on the left.

I loved Casino Royale but it annoyed me that the password Bond entered before the casino game was not VESPER.  What was Daniel Craig asked to enter when they were making the film?  Shouldn't there be someone employed to watch the film before it's released to check for these kinds of errors?  Also, the cuts on Bond's face magically dissapear when he's in the truck in Miami Airport trying to avert the terrorist attack.  Mr White is wearing knee-pads when he gets shot.  And what really annoyed me was when Bond was in the C.C.T.V room of the Ocean Club and he just happened to come across footage of Dimitrios recieving the text message outside the hotel, wasn't it a great coincidence that Dimitrios got that message when he was in full view of a camera, and that Bond got the unlikely information on the first CD he looked at.

Wouldnt really say was a movie mistake
Most films have this, like someone turning on the television just as a vital news broadcast comes up or finding CCTV footage. Surely its vital to the plot and is just used to get to the next stage of the film.

The only one I've noticed myself is in Demolition Man when Sly gets the glass floor shot out from underneath him by Wesley Snipes. He's holding a shotgun at the time but when he gets back up it's become a pistol.

I suppose it's not really a movie mistake but Bond could have obtained the information he needed another way - a more elegant, more feasible way.  I loved Casino Royale but that particular moment was poorly handled.

I just did some sightseeing using google maps and came to the statue of liberty:

The statue is facing south, to the left is New Jersey.

Now look at this picture from The day after tomorrow

The huge tidal wave which floods all of Manhattan seems to have come from the west. From New Jersey...
