More common than you think, it often threw me.

My mate's dad told him that he was in Nam. Given that he lived his whole life in Belfast and would have been in nappies and short trousers for the most part of the conflict was something that only dawned on my mate when he was pushing 15. It's either a testament to the dad's story telling or to my mates gullibility that he belived it so long.

As for me, I throurally intend to lie to my kids and to gage their wit by the age they catch on...first up "I invented purple" and "Paul Bettany is your real dad (kinda hoping that one will be true one day though)".

If I sat on a stick and jumped up I could hold my own body weight in mid-air.
Aslo I believed there was a huge scary glove puppet under my bed called "The Hammer". My sister said so and she was 10.
Dogs can't look up.

 because my parents generally discouraged it (so i would have enough room), i used to think that if you ate between meals, you could end up - i quote a younger me - "sick, poisoned or dead"

it got to the point that whenever i would go for a snack i would say "Mum, can i have this?...or will i be sick, poisoned or dead?" 

it seems funny now, but i'd always wondered why there was a reason we usually ate at specified times and i, somehow, came up with that conclusion

 I believed that you had to have tomato ketchup on cheese sandwiches and that you could fly down the stairs if you jumped up and crossed your legs really quickly. My brother told me both of those. I no longer listen to him.

 My gran used to put an egg into a kind of pineapple jug thing, then later I would go and check it and the egg would now be a milkyway.
I really believed that it changed. It's a great shame.
