Media hyped and expectation would be the phantom menace, but that was all our own doing.

Worst critically acclaimed film was Mulholland Drive. I'm still angry about sitting through that and coming away with nothing but confusion.

But dude...naked Naomi Watts masterbating plus the brunette chicks with the big rack...how can you not like the film?!  In all seriousness though it took me a few viewings to get it.  I got it though

The hard part of the plot was simply understanding the chronologty, the plot wasn't that hard to get. INLAND EMPIRE on the other hand.

Just to add my votes to the pool...

* Lost In Translation - Oooh, mystery! Just what did Murray whisper in Johansson's ear at the end? "Thank god this film's over" is my guess. Dreary and borderline racist at times.

* The Blair Witch Project - How anybody could've bought into this tension-free exercise in tedium being 'real' is a mystery greater than that of the witch herself.

* The Life Aquatic with What-is-name Doo-dad - Oh, isn't it *quirky*? And barely watchable.

* Lord Of The Rings trilogy - not bad films as such, but defo overhyped.

If you think Lost in Translation is borderline racist, you need to get rid of all your back copies of the Daily Mail and lighten up. It's almost as ridiculous as the people who say King Kong is racist.

I'd agree with the last POTC film. The first two were delightful fun though (if a little overlong).

I really don't see how Mulholland Drive is THAT confusing. I'm not being elitist or arrogant or anything, but if you pay attention then the general story isn't that hard to work out. Yes there are confusing scenes and images, but I think people allow themselves to be distracted by them, because the basic premise is pretty obvious.

More lately I'd add X-Men 2 and Batman Begins to the list, didn't see anything special in either of those. The first XMen film was better than the second anyway, and even it was merely OK.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned and discussed, haven't read all the posts.

But...

Shawshank Redemption.
Good film, not doubt.  Above average - sure.
In the top 5 films of all time?  No chance in hell.  I do not understand the over the top admiration for this film....

'Over The Top' on the other hand...Stallone at his best!

There's a few: Gone With The Wind - please somebody shoot me if I'm forced to watch this bloated, melodramatic nonsense ever again. The English Patient - please refer to the Seinfeld episode about this movie. It sums up my feelings very well. Atonement - I don't know what the Empire reviewers were on when they watched this. Keira Knightley cannot act - when she does that lip pout thing, she's just about the only woman in the world I want to punch.

Having seen Hot Fuzz again this is definitely a contender.  It is mediocre at best with admittedly some nice moments but the pace is spotty and the humour isn't sufficient to maintain the running time.  I tend to think Pegg and Edgar Wright are in themselves overhyped.  Yes they were fine in the tv comedy world of Spaced but their films haven't shown any true ability other than that you would expect to see on tv.
