To me overhyped is movies such as Phantom Menace, parts 2&3 of LOTR, The Dark Knight.  The ones where everyone is talking about them for months and months before they come out, where you get daily updates on the status of the movie so that the anticipation is at fever pitch by the time it comes out.

I agree, when I was a kid I had to sit through this movie countless times just because a certian member of my faimily loved it and because at the time we only had 1 TV it meant I had to sit through this again and again and again.

Miami Vice is not an action movie. It also wasn't hyped that much.
Dukes of Hazard overhyped...seriously?
What level of hype do you think O Brother received?....Also as for plot it was takenm from Homers Odessey so again.....seriously?

If it's dire, why did it make so much money?  OK, there are things I don't like about Titanic, but the reasons it succeeded are numerous:

1) The most famous seafaring disaster in history
2) Amazing special effects
3) James Horner's score
4) Reasonably convincing main characters (forgiving Billy Zane's sneering panto baddy)
5) A tragic love story which people still connect with
6) Some truly heartwrenching scenes (I still maintain that the best emotional sequences do not involve Jack and Rose)
7) James Cameron, who believed so wholeheartedly in his story that he pushed on with it.  Clearly a lot of people felt the same way.

 A decade ago we were all living in the shadow of the Phantom Menace being released. Still not seen hype at that level, for as long, since then.

Of course we all know that once it was released a proverbal squid was dropped on geekdom.

Hopefully we will see a retrospective on it.

It still surprises me that people can't get over the phantom menace. A poor film came out 10 years ago...big deal.

Rocky- Awful, awful film...

Although I do enjoy it slightly I agree....very over-hyped for such a silly movie.

Phantom Menace will always be the gran daddy of over-hyped movies. That film was everywhere for months.

Honourable mentions goes to:

Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone

Matrix Reloaded - I admit being swept up by the hype and counting the days until I saw it such a average movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - Ewwwwww

Actually the first Lord of the Rings film was not actually hyped - thats becuase the "hype monster" stomped all over it with the first "Harry Potter" Movie - and if you want a truly hyped to death movie there - look no further. HP was always going to do better - Fellowship slipped in under the radar afterwards and was critically and commercially acclaimed.

You couldn't move for that HP film at the time - you only have to look at its box - office opening and compare it to "Fellowship" - its massive - it's ironic though that each consecutive LOTR film after outperformed the HP one's. Two Towers made more than Chamber - Return of the King made Azkaban its little bitch.

And I agree - the theatrical cuts of all three films are good but not great - but the extended cuts elevate them to modern classics - there's far more room to breathe for a start and each character is better fleshed out. I know each theatrical cut clocks in at 3 hours but they feel rushed to me. I won't even watch those versions anymore. Add all thatricals together you get 9 hours 20 minutes - add the extended's together and you have 11 hours 30 minutes - another films worth of material. and you might think - "oh god - not more" but it makes them much better films.

Another film that benefits from a longer cut is Kingdom of Heaven - which had it been released as it was intended would have fared a lot better.

No I was not kidding about Titanic, yes it's about the worst seafaring disaster in history, yes there's a lovey dovey story, fine but why would this film be the top grossing film of all time? The people who saw it more than twice in the theatre are masochistic individuals.

Miami Vice was overhyped, they did tons of specials on it with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell narrating them.
Also for those of you remember the t.v. series it was an ACTION series not just drama. The movie was BORING

You guys think The Dark Knight wasn't worth the hype? It was and then some. Titanic wasn't worth the hype JMO yell if you want

I've sat and watched the film THREE TIMES since I bought it on DVD, and I still cannot see what most people find so bloody wonderful about it! 

Don't get me wrong, I thought Batman Begins was the shit, but TDK still has me feeling that something isn't right with it....

If you're trying to figure out that something's not right with The Dark Knight you are trying too hard. It's a highly complex film if you really think about it, but don't because you might overheat your brain. Just watch it and enjoy it, thinking about it takes all the fun out of it anyway.

Maybe you're overheating your brain trying to think up your own responses to other posters?

In actual fact, I like my blockbusters.  I'm not generally one for slow-burning intellectual thrillers or complicated twisty-turny storylines, to be perfectly honest.  I expect my blockbusters to be big, loud, and fun.  My brain generally stays at home with a good book (or maybe some porn) whenever I go to the cinema.

I thought TDK was way overhyped. Mind you, I dozed off 20 minutes before the end so maybe it got better! (Liked Ledger's Joker though).
