Beautiful couple, major director, legendary story, big bucks and a romance of Romeo and Juliet proportions. The premises for a brilliant picture were all there, just too bad the result was sentimental and melodramatic rubbish. It is beautifully shot though.

Very true. I think we should stick to ones that were talked about months ahead and had things like (dare I say it) Internet Viral Campaigns (being old though I still don't really get what those are but I think they constitue 'hype' ).

 Cloverfield. A truly awful film which was hyped to the gills. From the awful inconsistent monster size to the migraine inducing camera work to the irritating characters and poor plot.

It's from one of the essays in Titanic: Anatomy of a Blockbuster.

First people were talking about it because it was so expensive, then it was it's box office success, then it was the Oscar glory. It wasn't hyped up like other films.

Probably been said before but Spiderman 3. I would also say Batman Forever, I still think the first two Tim Burton versions were really good, only thing that separates them from TDK is Heath Ledger [but thats a debate for another thread], and I was really looking forward to the 3rd installment.  I think we all know what happened next...

Always get absolutely murdered for this but....Fight Club. Was pretty disappointed when i saw it and for me, the twist didnt really sit right.

Star Wars has to be the most overhyped film, since it's release. I'm not appologising for not getting it but I just don't understand what the fuss was about. It's a decidedly average film with poor acting (except Harrison Ford and the bloke that played Chewbacca). How did this film ever get as big as it did.

the phantom menace has to be the most hyped film of all time and it turned out to be shite.indiana 4 also comes to mind.
slumdog millionaire(ok im aware that this may be a controversial choice) was slightly overhyped for me.i utterly enjoyed the film but left the cinema feeling slightly underwhelmed by it all.now this one again is extremely controversial but im gonna also say citizen kane..from an early age i heard that this is the greatest film of all time by "people in the know".while watching it i felt i was almost obliged to like it. now while i recognize it is an exremely important film(  use of mise en scene is  revolutionary for its time blah blah) it wouldnt be a film that id watch again.

Havent seen Slumdog so I cant comment on that, but I agree with pretty much everything there.  I also had the same sort of experience with The Godfather [its revolutionary for its time etc] but I find Goodfellas to be far more interesting/compelling viewing.
