Having recently began an assault on DVDs of TV shows, this show caught my eye and its plot sounds like a very interesting one.

Anyone here a fan and can comment on whether or not this would be a good buy?

It is a fantastic show. Great characters played by great actors.

 Fantastic viewing, though be warned, Season 1 is very slow going. It takes its time to tell its story

Long time back I downloaded an episode, liked some of what it offered, then bought S1 years ago online but after watching it I never really loved it and I never liked its characters.
IMO the best bit about this series is the opening title sequence. Don't get me wrong its not all bad. I loved seeing Michael J. Anderson the carnivale man who might be known to some of you as the creepy red room dwarf in Twin Peaks, it was good to see Clancy Brown again on screen, this time as villainous preacher and Adrienne Barbeau known for her many tv characters. However the problem is their roles in Carnivale never get fleshed out very well, and the good versus evil story because very predictable. I also  never warmed to the main characters played by Nick Stahl (the guy who played a dorky John Connor in T3) and Clea DuVall, which is a shame because since then I've seen Clea in Heroes and thought she did great. Carnivale was an awesome idea but it never really delivered.

 Carnivale is amazing! The only bad thing is that it ended before its time. Beware though as if you do not like slow-burners then this is not the programme for you. Either way I found this programme to be totally captivating.

Thanks for making this thread - I've been looking at this on sale for months and wondering whether it is worth picking up. Looking forward to reading some more of the comments

 After all the complaints about this not being on the top 50, i'm gonna give it a go. Local libary rents it out for a fortnight for £2.50 so defo gonna give it a whirl

 I adore this show, it was cancelled before it's time. Yeah, it is very slow burning but I found it very gripping. Clancy Brown was excellent, he's very underrated.

 I got the first two episodes from love film and didn't like it so much.

Reading other peoples comments I think I might have to watch a couple more episodes.

 It's a slow burner. At the end of Season 1 there are many unanswered questions.

At the end of Season 2 most of them are still unanswered.

Workl of genius though. Very brave having a series where the main antagonists still haven't met by then end of S1.

Absolutely loved this show. I couldn't believe it when it got canned.   Still keeping my fingers crossed that they'll bring it back
