Only joking. I don't think Vimes is supposed to be a 'Dad from the OC' in looks terms. He's a weather beaten old drunk when we meet him for the first time in Guards! Guards! singing in gutter. Something which Pete Postlethwaite could capture perfectly...... erm again, sorry to Pete if he's a regular contributor to the Empire forum.


Perhaps it's a failing on my part, when I read books my mind generally likes to see the heroes as pretty, if not beautiful  

Moreover, perhaps I'm slighty against Pete Postlethwaite because I've seen him in lots of bad guy roles.  I'm probably type-casting him, he does an excellent creepy villian! 

I'm sure my doubts would be cast aside after the first five minutes of seeing him as Vimes.

He resembles the illustrations of the recent Where's My Cow, I wonder if he was the inspiration?

 Dozy - I understand why Pratchett has cut it down to one a year but why do they bring out all the other books at roughly the same time too?  Perhaps it's a marketing tactic?  Damn it though, I need a regular Discworld fix!

Izzard - Rickman would be great as Vetinari, although perhaps not quite qaunt/thin enough now. 

Base - I'm disappointed the Illustrated Wee Free Men isn't done by Paul Kidby.  You just can't get better than his illustrations.

 I'd go with Mort maybe but it's a hard choice. I do love Good Omen's and Where's My Cow?

I've read that last one quite a few times now and I don't even have kids.

mckenzie crook as nobby...perfect!!!! how could i not think of that???
philip gleinster as vimes, yeh with weight loss he coukld do it. oh and none of the suggested weatherwax actresses are right, they dont have the real witch look to them. and of course the big nose. : )
hey what about the governator for carrot (joke)

back to original topic, night watch is by far the best, also dorfl is the best!!! and he needs to make his books more discworldy his new ones dont have the same feel... who cna forget the brilliant magic of the first 2 books, the dragons that disappear the upside down mountain, the temple of 4 + 4 etc etc. the last continent is great :)
as is death in the last hero, oh and theif of time is brilliant, and small gods is hilarious and moving pictures is wicked for us movie lovers, and granny weatherwax is soo kwl and vetinari is so funny.

note: terry is my favourite author if you hadnt guessed.

Guards, Guards was always a favourite, though any involving the Guardsmen are good...

As for casting, how about James Purefoy for Vimes?  I can picture Alan Tudyk making a decent Carrot as well...

 Hmm, James Purefoy could work but he wouldn't be in my top list.  However, I don't think Alan Tudyk is right for Carrot, mainly because he's not 'manly' enough, if you seen watch I mean.  Plus, his face/persona is too comic.

Yes, but neither does Granny!!!  There are running jokes in the early witches books that she is annoyed because she has good skin and can't grow even a single wart, other than how she dresses, she doesn't look like a traditional witch.

Helen Mirren is perfect, she can look sterner than anyone!!!

 Anyone read Making Money yet? I enjoyed Going Postal so I'm quite looking forward to this. Dunno if I'd pay £18.00 but it's tempting.

 £18?!?  Shop around mate.  Most places are selling it for £10.  Try a Tesco store or buy from Amazon.  I ordered from Amazon, buggers still haven't delivered it though.

 Got it for a tenner from a Tescos store (or the missus did anyway). Not read it yet as I'm inthe middle of something else. I'm not one of those people that could read two or three books at once.

Favorite TP book so far is Nightwatch, awesome book, great storyline and really builds background for the Vimes character.

Mind you I do like all the Nightwatch books so far, they are ace. Really hit his stride with Men At Arms I think.

I completely agree there.  Nightwatch is one of his best and his watch series in general are all excellent. 

About half way through Making Money and it's a very good read.  Slightly repetative (Moist reviving a government institute and getting into trouble) but it has enough new faces and new story directions to keep it fresh.  Furthermore, there is some very clever and witting writing.  Perhaps more so than in the other more recent books, where he can perhaps rely on too many old jokes and observations.

Filming the second series of Heroes.

Personally they should of waited, maybe Sir David would of reaslised his mistake and allowed them to cast Ewen Bremner.
