Scared of spiders for years after watching this film as a kid. Not a night went by where I didn't check every corner of my room and screw anyone asking me to reach my hand under the shade to turn a bloody lamp on.

I did a huge promotional push with Arachnaphobia in my shop. Stuck phony spiders everywhere! It didn't go down well, so I had to take them down after a week or so..........

I know, but I worked at London Zoo and we did these huge poster's with one single animal on to promote the zoo. One had a huge spider on, we got so many complaint's about them. One woman could only ride so far up the train as she couldn't even walk past the poster.

I remember being pretty freaked out the first time I watched The Witches, a lot of creepy moments, especially the moment with all the witches unmasking. I don't think I actually got to the end of it for a while, so I didn't see the "happy ending" they tacked on instead of the original Roald Dahl ending

As mentioned by someone earlier, The Terminator scared me shitless! To say I was traumatised after seeing that endoskeleton would be an understatement.

Just looking for a picture of the endoskeleton and came across this,

The Elephant man did it for me. It was knowing he was real that freaked me out. Was ok while i watched it, but when i had to go upstairs to bed was terrified.

Evil Dead,the first part. It scared the shits outa me for years, and didnt watch horror films for years because of this film.

Then seen it after 10-15 years ago and it seemed to me at that time ,as a grown-up, that this film was more funny than scary !!

I posted about this the other day in the 'Unpopular opinion' thread. But when i was about 7 this scene really freaked me out. Kids movies nowadays have nothing on this.

I saw John Carpenter's The Thing when i was 7 on VHS. It didn't scare me really, I just thought that the gory scenes were way cool.

Candyman scared the shit out of me for years. I couldnt look in a mirror for like a week after i watched the film. And my brother, whenever i went downstairs at night, would start shouting Candyman, Candyman and i would scream myself shitless and run upstairs to bed.

At 8 years old critters scared me.

Watching The thing in the dark and alone when i was 9 really scared me.

And seeing Vivian's head torn off in the Young Ones made me hide behind the sofa.

Ah - I meant to edit my post there iunstead of making a new one - anyways, I saw The Orphanage recently, and it is the first film in maybe fifteen years, since I was a wee lad, that scared me the way a horror film scares you as a kid. Watching El Orfanato was like being young again, before you knew 'it's just a movie', and the people onscreen are actors, doing a job. You all need to see it if you haven't already. I had no idea a film, as an adult, could make me so tense that I would hide behind my fingers during certain scenes.

I saw the orphanage about a month ago and boy that was a twisted quite scary film. But heres two others from my childhood that I cried over...! I have a really bad fear of aliens.

Mine were Jaws after first seeing it aged 8/ back in 1978 when it was first shown on Tv

the next one is a bit of a strange one. I was scared of Murder on the Orient Express.

My main two were Jaws and The Omen. Damn the 70s came out with some proper scares if you include The Exorcist and Alien to name a couple of others

Jaws was pretty scary but I didn't have any nightmares or anything like that. No the thing that REALLY scared me shitless as a kid was the part In Jurassic Park when Nedry tries to get to the docks and encouters the dinosaur that spits venom. So every time that scene came on I'd hide behind the couch and get my mom to tell me when it was over. Ohh to be young again!

The trailer for Eight Legged Freaks terrified me as well! Every time it would come on in the cinema my dad would grab my leg at the scarriest moment and I'd be reduced to tears!

I watched Alien at the age of 4. After that traumatic experience, I kinda became immune to scares...

The cat and the canary, comedy mystery with Honor blackman in it I believe really messed with my head, god knows why ! Only 4 at time though!
Watched it again on TV years later quicly moved on to \\\\\\elm streets after that.

I must have been about 8 or 9 when i first saw The Exorcist. Shit me up totally. Basically, our family went round to some friends house and they had an illegal (as it was banned at the time) copy. So we all sat down to watch it (what the hell were my parents thinking letting their 8 and 6 year olds watch such a film) and after about 1/2hr my sister and I were sat there with cushions over our faces. This made the sound effects even more prominent and prompty gave us nightmare for weeks. The other thing that had an impact on us from the film was the bit where she hears banging coming from the loft. We had such a trap door up to our loft on the landing near our bedrooms so we constantly walked sideways with our backs against the wall to avoid being directly underneath it!

Other films I saw that gave be the beejezus at a young age -

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (Sutherland 70's version)
The Omen
Alien (but grew to love it by the age of 12)

This wasn't a movie but the episode with the evil leaper in Quantumn Leap scared me.

Also the episode of Dallas where the Devil showed up at the end (I'm sure that happened).

Candyman. Anyone who saw this too young is bound to have tried it in front of a mirror and terrified themselves. When I was 13 or so, I tried it in the bathroom with my then girlfriend. I got to the fourth "Candyman" but couldn't say the fifth. My girlfriend suddenly screamed "CANDYMAN!" right behind me. I jumped, screamed (like a girl) and fell backwards into the bath.

Night of the Living Dead. To this day I have an irrational fear of zombies. Imagine how thrilled I am when I occasionally have to deal with dead people at work.

Superman III (you all know the bit I mean!) I got so worked up during that scene that I ended up whacking my head on the floor.

Funny how the first two were films I never should have been watching as a kid so it serves me right.
