ORIGINAL: porntrooper Okay, so I got this on rental from LoveFilm, and to be honest, it isn't as bad as I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, I would never pay full price for somthing which is this average, but it isn't as bad as I was guessing based on reviews and gameplay videos. During the gamep,ay videos I saw it seemed to be moving too fast, zipping through levels withough any time taken to check out the environment and take time. WHen I fired it up and got into that first level, I forced myself to slow things down, take my time and wander the halls and to be honest it did a pretty decent job of building a good environment and atmosphere. The recreation of the Sulaco is great and the little nods to the movies are nice (evacuated cryo-tubes, names on lockers, half bishop etc) and I genuinely thought the move into the ALien nest area and first encounter were handled pretty well. It goes a little to shit after that though and the introduction of human enemies that pose a bigger threat than the Aliens themselves is criminal. The gameplay is as basic as it comes and has some annoying as fuck glitches (er, I'm pretty sure my sights were dead on that dudes head and he should be mince meat) but I think the nostalgia and franchise love kinda helps gloss over its many flaws. I'm now on LV-426, and in first section there I was actually quite impressed by the graphics (the billowing smoke from the atmospehere processor and the falling pieces of the Sulaco/Sephora looked quite neat) and as I moved into Hadleys Hope (how the fuck is it still standing? That's bullshit) I was again grinning by the accuracy as I moved slowly through the recognisable labs and corridors into Operations (seeing the hole where Hudson was taken, the door that Burke sealed and the vent Ripley and Newt escape into were all really nice touches). Then the gameplay kicks in again and it's nothing to great but nothing terrible... the Aliens come, I shoot, more Aliens come, I shoot and so on. The sneak section with the blind exploding Aliens (what the fuck?) actually managed to give me a couple of jumps, although these were mostly due to the big Alien that appears crashing through the ceiling vents rather than the tension or atmosphere. And that's kinda where I am, I've ventured outside, rescued another Marine and now seem to be stuck with the large Alien attacking and killing me constantly (not sure if I'm supposed to try and kill it, or run?). So yea, average as hell, dissapointingly so, but not a totwl write off and I'm sure it'll provide 10 or so hours of distraction. The bugs are annoying, the script is terrible (I never thought the word 'Actual' would ever come to annoy me so much due to it's over use) and the voice acting doesn't help. The graphics are sub par and the story is obvious and appears to be horribly retconning the movies, and it's never going to be something I ever want to return to, but yea. Not too bad for the moment. Must say also, I'm quite liking the use of some of the music queues from both Alien and Aliens. I am at the same point as you....this game is dire. I've continued from there today and just this minute finished it. The second half really starts to drag. The derelict levels are interesting only because of the recognisable structue and environments, but again having the majority of bad guys be human (and having them be tougher than the Aliens themselves) is just ridiculous. It also seems to me that as the game goes on it gets a lot easier. The story is fucking annoying, and the re-introduction of Hicks for the final few levels is terrible. I still class it as 'average', it isnt the worst game Ive ever played, but it certainly isnt great, and is certainly not deserving of full price, especially when there are so many bugs (unloading clips into bad guys that dont go down even though they're directly in your scope being the most annoying). Glad to have it over though, so I can return it and hopefully get into something else. Also, how many of the easter eggs did people find? There were a lot of clear and obvious ones stuck out in your face (Lockers, Ejected Cryo Tubes, Dead Hudson, Casey etc) but there were a few really random ones (Top Hat and Cane from Spaceballs) including one that makes no fucking sense as it is trying to keep continuity (the 'pups' from Prometheus shooting through the Derelict). I reckon if this had been released 5 or 6 years ago we may have all been a little kinder to it.
