FFS, what was the point of them selling me the bloody disk!?!?

How big and how often do the patches come out??

Is there anyway of getting them without d/l, are they on any magazine covers??

If you're worried about the size of the downloads maybe an online only game isn't for you.

Well, I can handle even 100Mb d/l's every few weeks, but 1.6Gb is a tad excessive!??!

But I gave in and am downloading it now.

Why is it starting wrath of the litchking tho and not the burning crusade which I installed?!?

You'll have to download new patches every few months mate, each a few gig. It'll be downloading the shit for WoTLK because thats the current expansion/content. It's an online game, so it's 'the same for everyone' kinda thing.

Every few months isn't too bad, I've got it running and it's still d/l small patches?!

Played for a couple of hours and it's only a few Mb's to actually play, so not as bad as I thought.

Life sucks at the moment, I need the distraction, hoping this is as addictive as it's supposed to be, seems good so far, tho I can't find this damn mine I need for the candle quest

I'm on sabbatical with this. Every couple of months I just get bored with it and have a couple of months off. I think it is because I have done most of what is available other than raids which I am struggling to get on so it had become a daily grind of dailies, daily heroic and then a bit of wandering around mining.

Boomkin is just the name people tend to call Balance Druids.
See also doomkin, oomkin, lazer turkey, fluffykin and panzerkin, amongst others
www.wowwiki.com/moonkin_form

edit: also, they have the best /dance in the game

edit 2: And just to warn you, patch 3.3 drops tomorrow. There will be downloading and installing going on before you can play - set it off then go and make some dinner would be my advice

Shouldn't be any more for awhile now, apart from the odd small bug fix perhaps.
The next big patch will be when Cataclysm arrives - I fear that's going to be a big download cos there are some huge changes coming.

And Kilo, if I should make it as far as Arthas, I'll tell him you said "Hi".

Going to go and use the Random Dungeon Finder now, see where I end up.

I havn't played this game in almost 12 months now. I have an endeering skill to play the game solid, and I mean proper 15 hour days, then reach a point and go 'Meh' and never touch it again... As fun as the game is, it is the biggest waste of time on the planet, besides Simon Cowles plastic surgeon...

Isn't a fun waste of time pretty much the definition of any game? It's not like playing Modern Warfare 2 is a constructive and useful activity

From what I know of WoW and games like it they are different. As it seems to me they are just made to be addictive to the extreme. Obviously replay value in any game is good. But WoW seems to demand too much of your time. You spend hours leveling up ... days ... weeks ... months leveling up and doing quests and when you feel you've reached the top some expansion is out that puts you at the bottom again and it just keeps going ... and going. To me they just seem to be slot machinnes of time and money. I can see the appeal though. Especially if you love RPG's. But for me it just seems like it would have to be my main game to play as it demands a lot of your time. I've seen mates get addicted to it ...

It's why I'd never get into them. Sure playing games is a fun waste of time. But I'd rather be playing a variety of different games than just WoW day in and day out. Plus I quite like it when I actually complete a game. Games with online modes are a bit more similar to WoW but still it usually consists of quick 10 min games at any time you can dip in and out of. If you get great then you will always be good. You don't have to keep playing to keep up with the levels of other people etc.

Exactly, MMO's are designed to be as addictive as possible and whilst all games are a waste of time, you can just play a regular game for a bit. WoW is designed to make you basically go round in circles, there's no end game so to speak of, nothing to aim for that won't be replaced once you achieve it. Psychologically looking at games such as WoW, their breaking a hell of a lot of ethical guidelines. For instance when the game first game out, there was no clock so players would forget how long they've played.

In my honest opinion I see WoW being the first/last/great MMO. It was a market which was relitivly untouched, and grew in popularity in the West after games such as Star Wars: Galaxies.  But now it is huge, with some ridiculas number of players. Although Western governments aren't taking it as seriously as Eastern nations such as Korea and China, I see things changing. The first gaming addiction clinic was opened in the UK recently and you rarely hear cases of people dying through lack of sleep/food/water from playing CoD. Although these cases are extremely rare, it is still something that will be looked into in the future, but not for a while. When I mentioned the gaming clinic opening to a Psychologist specialising in the Gambling Addiction area, even he giggled at the prospect. So it will take several years to gain respect of an actual issue. Until then WoW will keep printing money without pretty much any opposition.

Every game these days is designed to keep you coming back for more - just look at how obsessed people get with arbitrary rewards like trophies and achievements - but of course too much is a bad thing.
However, I would suggest that an addiction to gaming points to some kind of underlying psychological problem. The games themselves are not addictive, rather some other aspect of the person's life is driving them to seek an alternative reality.
They do probably need help, but I think they'd be better of going to a proper psychotherapist instead of some "Game Addiction" clinic, which no doubt charges a healthy fee for its services.
Games such as WoW are compelling though, I'll give you that. There's always another carrot to keep leading you on - another level to gain, a better piece of gear to get, a bigger, harder boss to kill - but that's part of the fun, at least for me. And if you're even vaguely stable from a mental point of view then it's not addictive.
Admittedly though, I'm not what you would call hardcore and I do like a bit of variety. I'm currently playing through Assassin's Creed 2, for example.

All videogames are all built on that addiction aren't they? Achievements or not we are compelled to play them. They are constructed to offer regular awards for comparitively little effort. From melodic blips to completing the game we are constantly drip fed pats on the back for doing what the designers want us to. Achievements and Trophies are just another tool designers use to get us to have 'one more go'.

I never sacrificed my social life to play WoW, well I did kind of lose a girlfriend to it. But I did spend a lot of time on it, always hated finding how many hours I'd played each of my characters for. It was addictive, I'd never miss work to play though so I'm not sure how bad it really was.

The reason I got on with WoW so much were the social aspects of it, I made some good firends in my guild, friends who I don't speak to anymore. Secondly I don't think any game I've ever played comes close to the mental challenge that WoW offers, 25 man raids with incredibly complex bosses are just so beyond any other game's level of tactics, mental alertness and dexsterity required. When you also do it over several different classes you're talking about pretty advanced levels of skill and you need to rely on other people. This leads to huge satisfaction when you finally down a boss, then you get the added incentive of the loot.

But I don't think I'll ever play it again, that said I haven't got as far as deleting it from my computer or getting rid of my characters. So I'm wondering if secretly I think I'll play it again.

Hey Kilo, I saw Arthas last night. He said to say "Hi", asked how you were doing, said if you were ever passing through Icecrown again you should stop by for a cuppa and a chat. He mumbled something I didn't quite catch then, I think he said "sealing your soul" - something like that anyway.

Then he killed me. Again and again. And again.

And again.

Ok, it's taken over my life and has taken up most of Christmas. Actually, since I have no life, this isn't a bad thing!!!

Is Cataclysm going to be another expansion or will it just be an auto downloaded patch??? The wee demo thing looked cool, but looks like it changes everything?!?!?

It's a mixture of both.
You'll need the expansion to play the new races, level up to 85 or go in the new instances, but the whole world changing thing is going to happen whether you get the expansion or not.
I'm guessing there'll be a lot of downloading to do before hand.
Incidentally, a lot of people are reporting experiencing minor earthquakes around the place. Blizzard have hinted in a cryptic fashion that it's part of the build up to Cataclysm

Looks cool, but won't this kind of make the original game and expansions a bit redundant? Looks like a complete overhaul of the game world...

It is a total overhaul. The original game as it is now will effectively cease to exist, though I believe that the two expansion areas (Outland and Northrend) will be largely untouched.
Wouldn't surprise me if they replaced the game that's currently on sale in the shops with a newer version that comes with the most up to date code on it. It was bad enough for you downloading the patches, it'd be even worse for anyone starting from scratch after Cataclysm comes out.

I know the game is effectively infinite, but is there a conclusion to the stories? I gather there is a final boss to Burning Crusade & Lich King, is there something similar to the original game?

Not that I am anywhere near it

There is generally a final boss to each expansion.
Can't remember who it was in Burning Crusade, missed out on all the endgame stuff, but in Wrath of the Lich King, it's, well, the Lich King.
The last patch had the 10-man Icecrown Citadel raid instance where, once all the bits of it are opened up, people will get to fight him.

He turns up around the place before then to mock you (or kill you) but you won't get to fight him outside of the raid.

In Cataclysm it'll be a big-assed dragon thing called Deathwing.
