saw the new 20min featurette on Rambo: First Blood Part 2.

Great little piece, it's one of them ones that reflects on a movie rather than a featurette which is there to promote it (alot of features are filmed for promotional purposes before a film is released). It's good though, fast paced and some interesting info.

I plan on watching the commentary later now. Crazy film.

Is that the "new" 4disc set ? Are there any other decent extras on the other discs ? I've got the originals but don't fancy double dipping for more shite extras!

yeh it's the four disk set.

there ain't a lot of extra's on the disks, but you get are pretty good. Commentaries were missing off the older releases i believe. It's worth the upgrade, and considering you can pick the set up for 10 at times, its not an expensive one.

watched the 2 and half hour doc. on the original X Men film.

very good stuff, its light and entertaining. The set looks nowhere near as intense as other blockbusters ive seen in these kind of docs. and it makes for a great watch. Hugh Jackman pretty much cements himself as the most likeable actor in the world during it, he looks like he'd be fun to hang out with.

Come Drink With Me - the commentary with Bey Logan and Cheng Pei Pei. Quite enjoyable.
BL had evidently done his usual pre-commo research and tried to do his usual indexing-style commentary to some degree, telling us about the birth (and some death) dates of the cast and crew, and listing other films they'd been in, how they made their name etc. But Cheng frequently interrupted his attempts, and talked about her own experiences of the film.

Perhaps tellingly, whenever Bey said something like "Hong Kong cinema wasn't revered in the way Japanese cinema was until the period of this film" or "King Hu was influenced by chambara", she didn't respond....

American Gangster - the commentary with Ridley Scott and writer Steve Zailian (recorded seperately). It was fine, though not exactly scintillating...

As with viewing the other extras, listening to the commo reminded me that this is a pretty good film, though I know it has its detractors.

Went to watch the commentary on Legend of a Fighter and found there wasn't one!

So, I watched the commentary on Crying Fist instead. Having now heard far too many Bey Logan commentaries (seriously, I'm officially sick of the man), this was marginally more enjoyable due the additional presence of Mike Leeder and the fact that it was not a Hong Kong kung fu film.

I also watched all the visual extras from Generation Kill plus those wee additional audio dialogues. All fair enough, but it brought back the realisation that this very good series was way too short.
Now I'm starting on the commentaries (one down so far).

Oh, and I watched some of the stuff from Bronson while we had the rental. The somewhat disturbing audio intro from the real fella, with his odd speech pattern, and the stuff with Tom Hardy training.

checked the 'return to school' making of doc, a doc on refering back to past stories for this show and a doc on the history of davros on screen and big finish cds. why that last one needed to take up all of disk 2 not sure.

Cure
- The brief extras, mainly a 16 min interview with Kurosawa Kiyoshi. Short but quite interesting, as he talked about the influence 70s American cinema had upon his work, and his relationship with star Yakusho Kji.

The Twins Effect - 6 interviews (Jackie Chan, Josie Ho, Edison Chen, Charlene Choi, Gillian Chung and Donnie Yen) ranging from 5 to 15 mins each. Rather perfunctory in the main. Mildly interesting to hear Chan talk about not believing in gods, feng shui and your typical Chinese superstitions.
Also, the brief making of, which was basically a 15 min advert, featuring chopped up bits of the 6 interviews, plus brief bits from Ekin Cheng and Bey Logan and a few shots of filming.

Ive got The Simpsons seasons 1 - 11 and have always been disappointed with the extras, however I love listening to the commentaries, they are always funny and informative and gives a different way to watch an episode you may have watched 100 times before.

I watched the extras from Starship Troopers 2 and 3. The extras on the third lean towards this kind of patting on the back thing. It was  a good improvement and a fair DTV sequel but eh most of the effects (especially the marauders) were very poor so interviews from cast and crew enthusing about how great they are are kinda  odd.

Generation Kill - the 6 episode commentaries (the episode Stay Frosty doesn't have one). All pretty good, though I preferred those with the actors and with the writer & marines who were actually in Iraq, than those by producers and such.

That's it now, though. I've rang that dvd dry (and I still want more).

In The Loop - The commentary is my highlight for later, but the deleted scenes are genuinely fantastic, most are also the webisodes included, but unlike the webisodes the deleted scenes are in 1080, and contain more profanity, comedy and nice character moments, the Chad and Toby sequences were rather oddly sweet.

PTU - The interviews with director Johnnie To and actors Simon Yam and Maggie Siu.

I'm getting a bit sick of these 15 min interviews on Dragon Dynasty dvds (pretty much the same script as the old HKL dvds). I love my special editions, but the extras have to be interesting for them to be worthwhile.

These aren't, really. Not a lot of insight, just a bit about the HK police having "team spirit", Johnnie To saying he re-uses actors cos he can't be arsed to get to know new people (!) and some slightly contradictory info about whether or not the actors had a script when filming.
Still got the Bey Logan commentary to go, which, again, I've heard so many now, I can't raise much enthusiasm for it.

Today, I was, stuck in the house, ill and bored, so I decided to watch some extras rather than concentrate on an actual film.

So, I watched the full doc on X-Men, the 1.5 dvd and the full doc of Aliens. Brilliant stuff, especially the Aliens one. Also listened to Bryan Singer's commentary on X-Men, which I enjoyed

Another day, another set of DD extras....

Heroes of the East - The mis-leadingly titled "tribute to Lau Kar-leung", which in reality is just an interview with Bey Logan talking about the film, and spending as much time discussing Gordon Liu, the Japanese martial arts masters and the weapons used in the film, as he did about Lau. So in effect, it was just a 35-minute distilled version of a BL commentary. That said, it was pretty interesting - but I am concerned that much of the info will be repeated verbatim in the actual commentary...
Also, the interview with Gordon Liu, which again, was relatively interesting, and certainly better than the interviews on PTU and the like.

Don't mean to be disigenous to this thread/forum but is there anywhere on the internet with a bit more lively discussion on the special features/Extras ? Gram123 seems to be holding the flag here :p

Yeah, it is pretty quiet in here - makes me think most people don't actually bother watching dvd extras.... All those special editions going to waste! Dunno where else you could go for discussion on them, but places like DVDTalk review them to some extent.

Anyway, I'm cracking on regardless!

Cop on a Mission - the commentary. Weirdly, it doesn't say who the commentary is by on the packaging or on the DVD, and the guy himself doesn't say who he is either, beyond informing the listener that he did the translation for the subs. Turns out it's a guy called Frank Djeng from Tai Seng (who distribute the dvd). The commentary's ok, not much info about production, but plenty of (quite listy) info on which other films the actors have been in, and discussion of camera shots and such.
Kind of nice to hear a commo on a HK film by someone other than Bey Logan, and it gave me a couple of ideas of other films that may be worth a look.

Been listening to some commentaries on Heroes - Season 1, pretty good stuff, the one with 3 of the cast members on episode 12 was a lot of fun, though not very informative.

I listened to the commentaries of Heroes season 2 last week. Crappy season but the comms were ok, most of the actors are good value.

Currently listening to the cast comm of Final Destination (region 1). It's one of my fave comms, haven't heard it for ages though. It's good fun.

PTU - Bey Logan commentary.

Funky Forest: The First Contact - 100 min Making Of plus a couple of short bits. The Making Of is all fair and well, and it's clear everyone had a blast making this very odd movie...

Haven't watched any extras recently (or listened to any comms) as I've been busy redecorating my flat. As soon as I do, though, I'll post to help keep this thread alive

I listened to all 3 commentaries on Dollhouse - Season 1, very entertaining Joss was extremely informative on ep 6 Man on the Street, it was nice to hear him talk about how he thought they never really "brought it" for the fight scenes in Buffy. Also watched the original pilot which was soooooo much better than "Ghost".

King Boxer - Commentary with Quentin Tarantino, David Chute and Elvis Mitchell.
It didn't tell me an awful lot, but it gave an American perspective of the film particularly to do with the introduction of 70s kung fu films into US cinemas. Nevertheless, it was an appreciated relief to have a Dragon Dynasty commentary from someone other than Bey Logan.

Extras: Christmas Special -  Eveything, which consists of "Your Questions Answered" - an interviewy featurette, "The Real Extras" - Karl Pilkington's day as an extra (this was also made available via Gervais' podcast), Outtakes, Deleted Scenes and a commentary.

All is fine, some of it's pretty funny, though the commo is a little lacking in places, as Gervais and Merchant can't think of anything to say.

Yes Man  - all the wee bits and bobs, outtakes and such. Short, but fair enough for this light rom-com.

Franklyn - just the deleted scenes, couldn't be arsed with the half hour doco, as I didn't really rate the film.
