CONTAINS SPOILERS This is tough. I loved Keep The Aspidistra Flying and A Clergyman's Daughter. But for me it's between the fantastic allegory of Animal Farm and the terrifying dystopia of 1984. Animal Farm is a masterpiece. It works well even if you aren't aware he is commenting on Red Russia. It is a very sad and frightening tale (I was traumatised by Boxer's demise when I read it as a child) and the moral is impossible to miss. The "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" denouement is a stroke of genius, impossible to forget. That said, I had to vote for 1984. Also a masterpiece, it is a disturbingly prescient vision which seems to get more and more relevant each passing year. I can think of few other books that have had such a massive impact on society. The Ministry of Truth, Room 101, Big Brother ... all have seeped into the public consciousness. In this age of CCTV, bewildering Facebook privacy settings and facial recognition software, we have all become Winston Smith, battling for anonymity. I just hope my face doesn't get chewed off by rats. -------
