Just a poll to find out which of the Bard's works is number one amongst the Empire faithful. Enjoy!

My personal favourite is A Midsummer Night's Dream, followed closely by Romeo & Juliet and Othello.

Ooooh that's a tough one.

I went for Romeo & Juliet in the end, although A Midsummer's Night Dream was a very close second.  His poetry in those plays is sublime.

It was a toss up between The Tempest - which I like as I've been in it twice (school productions, once as a sprite, and second as Caliban  ) and studied it as well - and King Lear, which I think is just perfect. King Lear won.

Still can't believe I haven't seen Ran...

The Merchant of Venice for me.  I've always loved Portia, one of Shakespeare's best characters imo.

I haven't read all of the above but Henry V is pretty damn good!

You didn't include my favourite, Much Ado About Nothing, so I didn't vote.

I was torn between Macbeth and Hamlet, but went for Macbeth as I love the character of Lady Macbeth. She's so much more interesting than her husband.

I went for Macbeth as it was the Shakespeare play I ever experienced and it's always captured my imagination.

Hamlet. It's one of the finest tragedies ever- an incredibly engaging story, with several of the Bard's finest passages.

I love so many but opted for Othello. I studied it many years ago for my A-level English and so really got to learn about all the themes and stuff. Very intense, emotional stuff, and I thought it was years ahead of its time.

I went for Midsummer Night's Dream, mainly cause Much Ado About Nothing wasn't up there.

Another vote for Much Ado About Nothing here - I recently saw the version at the National, with Zoe Wannamaker, and it was superb. I'd never read the play so went in  fresh.

Laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes - which is rare for one of Shakespeare's comedies!

Also love King Lear - studied it at A level.

A Midsummers Night Dream for me, although Macbeth was a close second in front of Romeo and Juliet.

I voted for 'Julius Caesar', as I think the political themes are so timeless, but I've got a soft spot for 'Twelfth Night' ever since I studied it at school.

'The Tempest' - and it's not up there.

I'd probably say Measure for Measure but I am very fond of Much Ado About Nothing, so that got my vote.

I still love MacBeth as it was my first ever Shakespearian play. Managed to see Patrick Stewart perform the role in London before Christmas. He was superb.

Went for Hamlet although I almost went for Midsummer Nights Dream.  Hamlet just edged it though as it's such a great tragedy and so much of it stuck with me after seeing it.

I've always had a soft spot for Romeo & Juliet-personally Juliet is one of Shakespeare's best and strongest chracters. Then there's Macbeth and Othello (was in the former as the Porter in a production so I guess that had an effect and I'm studying Othello anyway...), which are both great.

Macbeth, closely followed by a Midsummer Nights Dream.

I was torn between Macbeth and Merchant of Venice. I studied them in school, so I'm familiar with them most. I think on a scale of grandeur, Macbeth wins, but MOV is a bit funnier and slightly more entertaining. Can't really decide. Everything is great

I must admit I have not seen all of those plays. but I have seen about 7 of his plays and, although this will probably get me shot, I can only honestly say I enjoyed one. And That was a Midsummer Nights Dream. Which I thought was a marvelous play. the others I have seen really never did it for me, In some of them, most notably the Tempest, I just quite frankly was bored. He's just not my cup of tea

However, Anyone who is a fan of the bard, or isn't.. it really doesn't matter , should read Bill Bryson's book called Shakespeare, as it is absolutally fascinating for fans and non fans alike. Much more enjoyable than the plays themselves
