I'm currently half way through the fourth book in the Tales Of The Otori, by Lian Hearn.
Set in a mythical, medieval Japan, the books tell the saga of the Otori clan, concentrating mainly on the story of Takeo, who comes to rule the clan, and the great love of his life, Kaede, who becomes his consort.
If ever a series of novels cried out to be filmed, it is this.
I'd enjoy reading the opinions of others who have read these books.

slow to the point of painful and somewhat baffling in names (shenzu, otori, iyoto, saka all in one paragraph) don't stop these books being utterly fatastic. exceptional ending to harsh cry of the heron, and am about to start heaven's net is wide (the prequel)
