ORIGINAL: directorscut There is a very worrying trend happening in Hollywood. They are taking our entertainment heroes and making sadistic, nasty, torturous and just plain bad movies with them (Casino Royale). Stallone's Rocky Balboa was a wonderful antidote to the current cynicism of Hollywood. I am a fan of the Rambo series and of Sly Stallone so it is with deep disappointment that I must say that Stallone has fallen into this trap of cynicism. Perhaps I would have liked this film better if it was called Sambo. As a fan of the previous Rambo films I could not seen any connectivity with the character in this film and the character Stallone portrayed in the previous installments. In First Blood Rambo is very much an innocent child. His transformation into a predator is striking because of that. Thoughout the series Rambo is a man who would never turn his back on a fellow man. Who would go above and beyond the call of duty to save his fellow man. In Rambo one of his first lines is "F**k the world". Hmm. At the end of Rambo III Rambo came full circle with himself and enjoyed his time fighting beside Trautman. What happened between that film and this to turn him into such a disgruntled, unlikable sog? The violence is disgusting. I have a fairly strong stomach for this type of thing but I was turning away from the screen several times. This might have been effective in another film in another series, but I don't watch a Rambo film for this, much like I don't go to see a James Bond film to witness our hero getting his genitals turned into mince. Rambo also contains one of the worst characters in the history of motion pictures. In his first line he spouts more vulgarities than the entirety of the Rambo series had to this point. By the way, after this experience with mercenaries in RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II do you think Rambo would team up with them again? On the positive side, the scene where Rambo uses a claymore is a brilliant scene of action film-making. If only the film had more of that. When I look at the Rambo series I see a set of films with nobility, bravery, courage, honour, hurt and damn fine entertainment. This latest film could barely be any further than that. Shut up you girl! This is just the kind of proper action movie nobody's got the balls to make in hollywood any more just because they're shit scared of missing out on the PG-13 cashcow rating. Well done Sly! Bring on the Expendables, Rambo 5 etc etc! Good old blood and guts action, the more the better!!!! Oh, and the Claymore bit was the daftest bit in the whole film. It's an anti-personel mine not a sodding thermonuclear bomb! Way to integrate so early on the forum dude Considering how hollywood has pussified it's action icons ( John McClane, The Terminator etc..), I suppose it was pretty refreshing to see someone go in the opposite direction, and totally amp up the psycho factor. And Casino Royale was a damn masterpiece! Rocky 6 was on it's arse though, can't understand the praise it got?
