Nick Nunziata at CHUD.com just posted a great review, this paragraph in particular :-

"People don't die in their sleep in Rambo. They are shredded. They are hewn. They explode. They are perforated and they are incinerated. I'm cool with the Empire review - this film is not going to be for everyone, but after so much PG 13 action crap it will be nice to see some 80s style destruction.

No plot or a plot they disapprove of?, and what is an 'approved' subtext for an action movie?

The problem for any makers of action movies is choosing an enemy who can be safely blown away by our hero. The 'safe' adverseries include the CIA (as in Bourne) and the English (always popular). What is more problematic is choosing Persians (as in 300) or Burmese (here).

Examine if you will the wider picture as well. This is a movie about westerners who, with no UN approval, invade a 3rd world country to aid an oppressed minority and slaughter the Oppressors. This might perhaps have parallels with recent international events for critics looking to rate movies for 'subtext' rather than their artistic merit

Look, the film is a mindless action film with no plot just like every Rambo film (excluding the first). Not everyone enjoys that...GET OVER IT!!!

ps 300 actually got good reviews

There is one thing that everyone is missing:-

This will be the only hardcore violent film any of us will see this year, so buck up and see the film while it lasts. You won't see any violent films as much as this film has

On another note, who cares what the reviews say, it's Rambo, it's mindless fun with hardcore violence and cheesy lines

The main reason for Sly bringin in mercenaries to help with the carnage was to represent the fact that a 60 year old soldier can only do so much. If he was all "one man army" still, it would have been too much. No Roberto, you missed it. And we dont need back story and character for the bad guys because they should be, and are, one dimensional evil bastards.
The action is fantastically staged, no understatement. When bullets fly, it isnt just a small suib that is let off in the stuntmans chest, his whole head is ripped off. Isnt that what would really happen?
This is action movie making to die for. The old master returns and covers new ground and gives the young guns something to think about
By the way, I have seen it. In Dubai. My heart was racing and my blood was pumping and it was all over before you wanted it to be. Perfect. Sly's double punch of heroes from the past has worked, and then some.
