The most ingenious TV show ever. I love Alan Davies in it. I got the 9-DVD boxset for Christmas, and it really is one of the best presents I've ever received.

So what's everyone's favourite episodes?

I especially like that one where Alan bit that homeless guy's ear. Very Mike Tyson of him.

Ah, Jonathan Creek was awesome. The best episode was probably the Christmas special one about the woman who apparently died hours before she shot herself and with the guy who left no footprints in the snow. That one also had the unfortunate girl being sawn in two with a buzz-saw [in flashback].

Other good ones:
- The two-part one about the guy who jumps off a balcony, apparently committing suicide, and is then seen strangling someone a few days later
- The one with the room in which several men appeared to die of fright when staring out a hotel window. That episode scared the absolute shit out of me when I originally saw it and I'm still to scared to rewatch it ten years on.
- The one with the guy who was killed, left in an old house and then apparently climbed the stairs while dead.
- The other Christmas special where most of it took place in an old Scottish castle. Quite creepy that one.

It went downhill a lot after Caroline Quentin left, though.

I watched the first 2 series last week, including these ones. It was the first time I saw a few of them and it's a great show. Very clever and Davies is brill in the role. I am not a fan of Caroline Quentin though and Maddy does annoy me a bit. Haven't seen any of the ones with Julia Swahalalalalalala in them.

I love Jonathan Creek! My brother's had the boxset for a couple of years, and watched them all again . Can't remember my favourite episode, need to watch 'em again!

I wish there was more series, Davies could do with some more work (other than QI)!

Anyone see the new episode last night? Alan Davies was on good form and Sheridan Smith was a good replacement for Julia Sawalha, though being an investigator like Jonathan didn't really give him his usual soundboard for his little ideas. He seemed to be sorting out women trouble most of the time, though the fact that the woman was Katherine Parkinson was a bonus. It was a pretty good episode but a bit lacking in the spooky atmosphere of the best ones, and I still can't stand Adam Klaus and his stupid sub-plots.

Moments were OK but I thought Smith should stick to the subpar BBC3 rubbish she fits in with - she isn't much of an actress. But as every actress in it, Parfitt aside, seemed only to be there to show her boobs without a lot of clothes on maybe that isn't relevant - how dirty mac brigade was this!?

Sheridan Smith was ok, but I was unsure at the beginning due to her being a rational explanationist like Jonathan is. I felt it was stealing John's thunder a bit, but I'm glad in the end, Jonathan came up with the conclusion and figured it all out, leaving Sheridan's character looking like an amatuer. She's got a lot to learn from the master!
I never really liked Adam Klaus in it but I found him amusin in last night's episode. I thought the story was excellent, even though it was a bit confusing at times with the multiple mysterys. Still miss Caroline Quentin as his sidekick though. She was a hoot.
So, was that episode a one-off or is there many more to come? I hope its the start of a new series. Jonathan Creek was one of the best things on tv, and I'm glad its back. Along with his windmill!

I didn't think much of Sheridan Smith either. It's such a shame both Sawalha and Quinn's characters were  written off, they were much pluckier sidekicks, with more chemistry with Jonathan.

Liked the twist with the SPOILERBathSPOILER though.

I thought it was awful. Far too long, they could have ditched the silly assistant's murder storyline and just focussed on the scary house, making it about an hour shorter.

Also it didnt seem to take place in the real world. Sheridan Smith's character didnt seem at all bothered by the disappearance and possible death of her friend and then after falling into a tank of 70 year old putrid water filled with 9 dead bodies, including that of her friend, she seemed to shake it off and get on with things far too quickly. Also, surely the police would be involved with her friend's disappearance and death?! Didnt she have any family?! Did they just leave all those bodies in the hidden tank?!

I used to be a big fan of Johnathan Creek but I thought the latest Special was atrocious. The main problem was that it was far too long, the story wasn't good enough to fill the time and it meant it was achingly paced and full of horrid subplots like the embarrassingly poor thing about 3D Porn. I don't mind Adam Klaus,  but he should stick to being a slightly wacky magician for a bit of loight relief rather than having sub plots with over-the-top ideas in them. I didn't actually mind Sheridan Smith, I could certainly live with her being in a new series, it was the plot that was terrible. I'm not going to say it was 'unrealistic', since Creek has always been based on the far-fetched, but some of the character decisions and conseqiences were incredibly poorly done.

Also, I swear there's been a whole story before about a room being in a different place in the house to what it appeared to be from the outside?

Very disappointing. I can remember when the solutions to the crimes were clever and innovative rather than the one presented here. SPOILER: The whole premise that everyone had stayed in that room had disappeared was reliant on the fact that every single person would have wanted a bath? There was no chemistry between Creek and and Smith's character and the whole thing was just lacking.

To be fair, Jonathan did say that not everyone disappeared, and that legend is made up of those that do perish being reported whilst the people who don't are quickly forgotten.

Loved it!  Sheridan Smith was excellent as Creek's sidekick Joey Ross, and played the part exactly as she was directed to, with energy, cynicism and scepticism. You do show yourself up 'elab49', if you haven't realised what a versatile actress this girl is! She has appeared in many television dramas and comedies, and played a variety of characters, including the dramatic Cinderella Doe in the Xmas Special of Larkrise to Candleford.
She is also an accomplished Stage-play, Shakespearean, and Musical Theatre performer, and was nominated last year for an Olivier Award, and Theatregoers' Choice Award, for her appearance in London's West End!
The many positive reviews from amongst the nine million people who watched this Jonathan Creek special, will hopefully inspire David Renwick to continue with a new series!

Hardly - one can only judge on what one sees. Which was a poor excuse for acting.

Perhaps she should try to replicate her claimed quality in theatre on TV?

Absolutely dire. Too many pointless and badly written sub plots that took away any pacing from the initially interesting premise about the spooky room. Even that turned out to be an anti climax.

What the hell was the porn stars russian gangster boyfriend all about... was he supposed to be funny? Same with the spooky painting, I was hoping for it to have some importance but no, like everything else in this special it was a waste of time!

Total let down.

I agree with the pacing problems and the "comedy" was pretty hit and miss, in fact the whole show was, but overall it was enjoyable and good to see it back. I didn't think I could take Davies seriously again after all those seasons of QI, but he proved me wrong (though, anyone would look pretty dim-witted sitting next to the legendary Mr Fry).

They need to bring it back for another series with ONE HOUR eposodes.

Yeah they clearly had no idea what to do with two hours so just filled it with shite. Even so the main plot was pretty weak and I couldn't see it really standing up as a one hour episode anyway.

Not a perfect special, granted, but very enjoyable. The main mystery was a cracker, S. Smith was a bit of a waste, but the 3D porn subplot was a hoot, I thought. And Davies was on usual great form. All in all, I WANT MORE!
