What would be the point of a movie if it was just a handheld camera shot of exactly what was in front of you (the tarmac). This is a monster movie and if you had no shots of the monster, what would be the point?
It was a monster movie that delived exactly what it said on the tin!

Not seen the film but I think the comment about people running away and not filming isn't correct. Go onto the internet (I know, I know you're one step ahead of me) and there are thousands of clips of people filming incredible and scary things, instead of running. There is certainly something to be said for amateur filming of events and people really do get close to the action with no thoughts to personal safety. Maybe they feel protected by watching the world through the lens?

Good point, Kilo. You're absolutely right - I think people think, 'I can't get hurt. I have a camera'. There's also an element of 'I need to document this', which is touched on in Cloverfield. 'People will need to see this'. It's Citizen Journalism taken to extremes.

However, there's also an element of 'I can sell this to the news and get loads of moolah'. In real life, that is, not Cloverfield.

That said, if a giant monster attacked London, I'd hop in the car and beat a path out of the city, leaving any camera behind.

Forwards_are_girls has given a Monster Movie a one-star review because the fact that one of the characters has filmed it makes it unrealistic? Er, it's a MONSTER MOVIE! I wasn't aware that monsters existed! We may as well give Star Wars a one-star review because space ships don't exist...

Saw the movie last night and it is truly an amazing film. Go see it at all cost's! If you love a rollercoaster movie you will love this! Everyone left the cinema shell shocked.

I'd have a word with it. Ask what it thinks it's playing at.

I'd do a burton if the Aliens came to London and I could therefore suffer a horrendously painful drawn out death, but I'd have no problem being clobbered in a quick splat if it picked up Nelson Column's and used it as a cosh.

There another example of this in War of the Worlds (the new and better one) where the very first "ka-poof!" death is a guy holding a camera. You'd defo film the fucker if it was just you (obviously if you've gotta get your family out fuck the pulitzer).

I'm gonna pester my Editor to twist some arms so I can get into a press screening before some spoilery commences....

 How can you say that Jurassic Park is only 'arguably' a 'modern cinema hit' that 'strikes you as new'?
Tell me what film blended CGI before that? I think it still is the greatest cinema experience anyone this generation has seen, and will only be topped when they can make the effects actually LEAVE the cinema screen!

Jurassic Park used it effects to a greater degree though. The effects in T2 were brilliant and to a certain extend groundbreaking, but when you compare to how they were used in the plot and the interaction with the characters in JP and the nature of the effects, JP has to hold more of a weight for milestones in cinema. They brought dinosaurs to life!

 Just got back from the midnight showing, and I can honestly say the film is awesome. A completely thrilling, and genuinely scary monster movie, with fantastic action and a unique perspective. Say what you want, but I think Empire got this review spot on.

 I'll be watching this film when it comes out. I've seen a few reviews so far that seem to be saying this is a fantastic visual and audio experience but lacks any real substance or character development. But sometimes that just doesn't matter. I loved Beowulf in 3D purely for that reason: the visual side of it more than made up for any plot deficiencies. Sometimes that's the reason for turning up to watch a film in loud-as-hell surround sound on a 40 foot screen.

Wow! Five stars and according to Helen, a collective five star rating from the Empire lords and laydees, not just Olly's own view. Something new and yet original is indeed a rarity these days. If this film has moments were you just go "Holy f***ing shit how did they do that?" then all the better. As for people slating it before they have even seen it, well, thats just f***ing dumb! I admit I am a bit sick of all the hype, mainly because theres nothing worse than a hyped up film failing to deliver. Roll on 1st Feb!

 For all those people who are downloading the film on the interweb, in the words of the Shamen- naughty, naughty, very naughty! For god's sake your posting on a movie magazine's web page reviews of a movie!!! At least have the decency to see it as a movie, not some pixellated, sound-out-of-sync data stream that most CINEMA going folk wouldn't subject there worst enemy too. I must admit, Im suprised that Empire gave Cloverfield 5 stars, then again, I was suprised Alien Vs Predator 2 got 1 star!
I havent seen these movies yet though so ill hold judgement until I do.
What worries me about Cloverfield is that I saw the latest trailer on their website then again at the ciname a few days after and noticed how much clarity and detail the trailer lost on a big screen - Im hoping this has been sorted for the main feature.......
PS Shame on you cowboys downloading the movie from the net! get your @ss to the cinema to watch it!

ignoring the whole stealing thing that is an interesting comment.  considering the film is seen through the eyes of a hand held video camera, it might work better on the small screen?  you dont normally watch 'home movies' on a massive cinema screen so this film might be even more frightening on the small screen.  its 'home environment'.

Shot on a video camera it may be (well, that's the impression they wish to convey, of course), but the scale of this deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. I wonder if impact might be lost on a telly.

All theatrical release movies are intended to be seen on the big screen, however, I do agree that some films do work better when watched at home alone on a smaller screen, The Blair Witch Project is a good example... I hated it at the cinema, grew to enjoy it on DVD.  A lot of that is due to it's handheld video camera perspective, which is of course the same (kind of) style which Cloverfield is aiming for.  However, I think Cloverfield's scale demands a big screen viewing, partly because I hear the sound design is superb.

will be quite an interesting experiment.  if only you could erase your memory of a film to watch it fresh again on a different screen!

i will probably go for the big screen option anyway.  was merely wondering.

I was lucky enough to go to a press screening on the 17th and i have to say i was left speachless by this film. I really havnt ever seen anything like it, and i mean that in a good way!
It was excellent, hard work at times cause it was so intense but that for me just made it an even more enjoyable experience!
A MUST SEE.........AT THE CINEMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
