Here's the spot I will take and probably never fill in. See you in 2009 folks.

EDIT: Incidentally, I just signed up for http://allconsuming.net/ , it's a great way to keep track of the movies (and books and music as well as other things, even food) you consume each day and should probably help me fill this in.

OK, I'll start now. This will be a record of ALL films I watch in their entirety this year, whether that's at the cinema or on TV or wherever. I'll be including films I see for the first time AND films I've already watched.

Yay! I did it. I managed to catalogue an entire year of film watching. It's been interesting to see how much I watch and how little I get to see at certain times, December being a low point actually.
Anyway, I'm all set for this new year now. A film per day is my challenge.
Gonna fail big time.

January
1st - #1 Love, Actually (Sky+) - Embarrassing start to the year. Really should've picked something cool. Rubbish, but watchable (just).
2nd - #2 The Railway Children (Sky+) - First time I saw it. Brilliant. A bit dated, but a lovely little film which i will watch again.
4th - #3 The Simpsons Movie (DVD) - I thought this was an amazing film to watch with an audience. Especially the first half hour. It loses quite a bit of that on DVD, but i still think it's better than some critics said it was.
5th - #4 I Am Legend (Cinema) - I thought it was brilliant mostly. Agree with Empire about the dodgy CGI and the knockout performance from Sam the dog.
6th - #5 Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (DVD) - Always been my least favourite Indy film, but thought I'd give it another go after reading the Empire preview of the next one. It's good, but still, I think, over-rated.
20th - #6 There Will Be Blood (Download) - A fantastic film. In my opinion it's PTA's best. DDL is brilliant as usual, but Dwayne from Little Miss Sunshine gives him a run for his money.
22nd - #7 Walk Hard (Cinema) - Pretty poor. I think i laughed twice.
25th - #8 Spice World: The Movie (TV, BBC4) - Whilst it is really really awful and embarrassing, I just can't bring myself to hate it. Besides, my daughter wouldn't let me.
29th - #9 Sweeney Todd (Cinema) - I have a pet hate of throat slitting, but this movie was done in such a way that I wasn't bothered by it. Can't say as much for the woman in front of me though. A great film, i thought. Enjoyed it.
29th - #10 In The Valley Of Elah (Cinema) - A nice worthy film, a bit too long, but it kept me interested for most of it. Don't suppose I'll ever watch it again. TLJ was great as usual of course.

February
1st - #11 Cloverfield (Cinema) - Liked it. A lot. Felt a lot like one of those theme park simulator rides. But with a story. Didn't outstay it's welcome either.
1st - #12 Hairspray (2007) (DVD) - Wasn't really fussed about seeing this, but i thought it was fun and easy watching. Almost fell asleep twice though.
2nd - #13 Juno (Cinema) - Rowdy audience who wouldn't shut up. Film was sweet. Mrs Frankie liked it too.
6th - #14 Eastern Promises (Download) - Wow! Great film. Brutally violent in places. May just buy this on dvd.
9th - #15 The Blair Witch Project (Sky+) - I think this still holds up pretty well, but it's not nearly as scary as i thought it was when I was 27.
16th - #16 Jumper (Cinema) - Not bad. Thought the Palladin's were pretty bland though. No powers? just humans with fancy weapons and an unexplained grudge. Why would your own mother want to kill you. Lazy storytelling is a pet hate of mine. Still, the fighty bits were fighty enough for me. Will hope for a better sequel.
16th - #17 Bruce Almighty (TV, BBC3) - God, I hate this film now. So twee. Can't believe I actually enjoyed it at the cinema.
18th - #18 No Country For Old Men (Cinema) - Brilliant. I really enjoyed it. Think I need to see it again to fully appreciate the ending, but didn't think it was the anti-climax I'd been led to believe.
19th - #19 The Water Horse (Cinema) - Not a bad little family/fantasy film. Pretty much predictable, but engaging enough to keep my interest. My little girl adored it.
20th - #20 National Treasure: Book of Secrets (Cinema) - Wasn't sure what to expect having never seen the first one, but what I got was a fun adventure film. not a patch on Indy of course, but still fun. My son loved it.
22nd - #21 The Jungle Book (Disney) (DVD) - My favourite animated movie by miles and maybe even the greatest movie ever for pure entertainment. Expect to see this again on this list during the year.
22nd - #22 Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (DVD) - Always been my favourite of the 3. It's so damn entertaining and brings back memories of the 12yr old version of me sat on the front row, giddy with excitement. love it love it love it.
24th - #23 A Trip To The Moon (Download) - Decided to watch some old old films in the run up to the Oscars tonight. It doesn't get much older than this. A brilliant early sci-fi effort from 1902 with remarkably lavish production values. And at 12 minutes long it passes fairly quickly too.
24th - #24 Killer Klowns from Outer Space (DVD) - Great trashy fun from the 80's. Still love it.
26th - #25 Titanic (TV, Sky Movies Drama) - yeah, it's corny, but it's still very watchable.
27th - #26 Be Kind Rewind (Cinema) - Why is this getting slated? My anticipation from the trailer had been thwarted by all the negative press, but am glad to say I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it's not got the edge that maybe some people were hoping for, but it's got real heart and is genuinely funny. I think this will be one film that, if on late night TV in the future many people will love to stumble across. It's that kind of movie. One for re-evaluation methinks.
29th - #27 Surf's Up (DVD) - sat with the kids to watch this. It was just ok really. Liked the film-crew style to it, but probably not one I'd watch again. My kids love it of course.
29th - #28 United 93 (DVD) - brilliant way to end the month. A real sobering yet thrilling film. Even though I know the tragic outcome well, Paul Greengrass still manages to keep me on the edge of my seat. A remarkable retelling of a remarkable tale.

March
1st - #29 Stardust (DVD) - saw this at the cinema. really good and exceeded my expectations after being beaten to death with the rubbish trailer for months. Not sure I liked seeing De Niro in drag though.
2nd - #30 Once (DVD) - An almost perfect film. I am surprised however that it's had such universal praise as it seems such a love it or hate it kind of film. Luckily, I loved it.
3rd - #31 There Will Be Blood (Cinema) - wanted to see it on the big screen after enjoying it on a downloaded version on my media player. It really is a fantastic film. I just can't see anything beating it to be my favourite of the year.
8th - #32 Epic Movie (Sky+) - Rubbish, just rubbish. My 13 year old son made me watch it.
9th - #33 Children Of Men (DVD) - Good film. didn't know much about it and it kept my interest. an extreme and bleak vision of the future. The long, unedited shots were brilliant.
9th - #34 Naked (Sky+) - Not seen this for ages. Just as mindblowing as I remember. A firm favourite.
10th - #35 Diary Of The Dead (Cinema) - It was a bit of a by the numbers horror pic, but I liked it mostly.
13th - #36 Rambo (Cinema) - pretty gruesome. I liked it.
13th - #37 Vantage Point (Cinema) - Massively silly, but totally enjoyable. Guessed the bad guy quite early on though.
15th - #38 Life Is Beautiful (Sky+) - One of my faves. |Never fails to move and amuse me.
15th - #39 Horton Hears a Who (Cinema) - I think I liked it. just not sure. I definitely thought it was ok, but not sure I actually liked it. Hmmm.
16th - #40 Mary Poppins (TV, ITV2) - Actually, was playing scrabble with the family whilst this was on, but I've seen it so many times, I don't need to keep looking at it to enjoy it. A classic, but overlong. I still hate all that business at the bank near the end.
30th - #41 Back To The Future (DVD) - Can't believe i've just gone two weeks without watching a film. In my defence, I've been a bit ill and also very very busy at work. Got me some catching up to do now. BTTF is one of my all time faves and I just can't watch it enough time. Only just noticed for the first time that the bit of ledge that breaks from the clock tower under Doc's feet near the end is still broken once Marty returns to 1985. Lazy Hill Valley council workers!

April
1st - #42 Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert in 3D (Cinema) - Obviously, I didn;t go to see this for myself. I took my 6yr old daughter and 9yr old son. They both loved it. I didn't but I can't hate it 'cos it kept them happy. Actually, I spent the movie thinking how it was actually a zombie movie. Only, it's the scariest one yet because the audience around me turned into zombies too.
1st - #43 The Orphanage (Cinema) - Ah, that's better. i dropped the kids at home after hannah montana and returned to the pictures for this altogether better scary movie. Really creepy and really well put together. One of my films of the year definitely.
2nd - #44 The Transporter (TV, Film Four) - Cheesy, corny, ridiculous. Brilliant.
4th - #45 Son Of Rambow (Cinema) - wonderful little movie. Really made me feel like a kid again. I can remember when all the smokers had to sit in the right side of the cinema. I had to sit there with my uncle. - great performances from the young lads too.
5th - #46 Beowulf (HD-DVD) - I liked this in 3D and I think it's pretty good on DVD too. Especially luscious HD.
6th - #47 Die Hard 4.0 (DVD) - At last i watched it. I've meant to see this loads of times, now I've finally seen it, it's all a bit meh. Not bad, some good action sequences but not a patch on the original. The music video on the DVD is hilarious though.
10th - #48 Grindhouse (DVD) - that's right. the real version with both films playing after each other with all the fake trailers included. I really got what they were trying to do with this project. I prefer Planet Terror, but Death Proof works better as part of the package than it does by itself. Overall, I love it.
13th - #49 Hard Candy (Sky+) - Yikes! Uncomfortable viewing ahoy! Ellen page is brilliantly scary in this. I really wasn't sure who I should be rooting for during this film. Great ending. A good film overall, but again, not an easy watch.
24th - #50 In Bruges (Cinema) - I loved this film. So unpredictable and so un-PC. Made me laugh out loud lots.
24th - #51 21 (Cinema) - Dull, dull, dull. Pretty yo look at, but very very dull.
26th - #52 Toy Story (DVD) - It's hard to watch this now 'cos I've seen it so many times in the past. i know every line, but it's still classic stuff and still make me laugh.
26th - #53 Toy Story 2 (DVD) - Now, I never really cared for the sequel originally, but it's grown on me over the years. Original is till the best tho.
26th - #54 Monster House (DVD) - One of the better non-Pixar computer animations. very reminiscent of films I grew up on. Some fine voice talent too.
26th - #55 The Matrix (DVD) - Not watched for ages, but enjoyed every second like it was the first time I'd seen it.
26th - #56 Goodfellas (DVD) - I love it of course, but had forgotten how early into the film the "Funny, how?" scene is.
27th - #57 An Incovenient Truth (Sky+) - A film to make you really think. I was a bit ignorant of Al Gore before, but now I think he's an inspiration. No wonder the futurama crew love him so much.
27th - #58 27 Dresses (Download) - Definitely a girly film. The wife enjoyed it. I thought it pretty much did what it set out to do. nothing more. An easy watch for a Sunday night.
28th - #59 Happy-Go-Lucky (Cinema) - Wow! A really amazing character study. I thought it was flawless really and as irritating as poppy could be at times, she was also a reminder of how easy going we could all be if we didn't let life stress us so much.

May
1st - #60 An American Werewolf In London (HD-DVD) - Probably should never watch this at 2am ever ever again. Still manages to scare the crap out of me after all these years. Brilliant film, aged really well.
5th - #61 Iron Man (Cinema) - A superior super hero film. I liked it. Nice to see a couple of nods to The Iron Giant in there.
10th - #62 Raiders of the Lost Ark (DVD) - Now, I've always been a Temple of Doom man and for years have rewatched this just by fast forwarding to the action sequences, but I watched it all the way through this time for the first time in years. You know what, it's a through and through classic. I love every second of it. Still prefer Doom though.
10th - #63 Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom (DVD) - Why does this get so much flak? It has everything you could want in a comic adveture movie. What's not to love. One of my top 20 films of all time.
11th - #64 Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade (DVD) - I just can't warm to this 3rd film. It's ok, but definitely my least favourite. Here's hoping the new one is better than this.
15th - #65 Doomsday (Cinema) - Oh. My. God. I really hated this and almost walked out a couple of times. An ugly mess of a movie. Not in a good way.
18th - #66 Speed Racer (Cinema) - I reallt shouldn't have enjoyed this. It's got that bright overly colouful look that I hate (think Cat in the Hat), a predictable plot and a performing monkey. But you know what, I thought it was brilliant. It really had me hooked throughout and nobody is more surprised than me. Looks gorgeous too.
20th - #67 The Eye (Cinema) - I've only seen the first half of the japanese original, so thought watching the remake would be ok as i wouldn't be too spoiled. Should've just watched the end of the original. This new version is one of the dullest films I've seen in a long time. The jumpy moments awoke me a couple of times and that's the most positive thing I have to say about it.
22nd - #68 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Cinema) - hmm, not really sure what I think after one viewing.Definitely some dissapointment, but as i'm gonna be seeing it again with the kids next week, I will reserve final judgement until then. I will say however that I'm not very happy with Shia doing the lion's share of the action. Indy was in the background, along for the ride, far too much.

June
1st - #69 Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Cinema) - My second viewing and you know what, it hasn't improved. I was still very bored by it. A huge disappointment.
6th - #70 Gone Baby Gone (Cinema) - Totally loved this one. I just went with the plot, knowing very little before going in, and it gripped me throughout. Very impressed and one for my end of year list.
7th - #71 Enchanted (DVD) - Charming and funny. Abrilliant family film and nice to see all the nods to the Disney classics in there too.
16th - #72 The Incredible Hulk (Cinema) - A film with two identities. Bad id + good id = OK film. Ish.
20th - #73 The Happening (cinema) - Bloody hell. what "happened" here. I love most of Night's other stuff, but this was unintentionally hilarious stuff, yet at the same time as boring and as unbelievable as anything I've ever sat through. very nearly walked out. Worst film of the year so far.
26th - #74 The Escapist (Cinema) - Impressive little thriller. kept me gripped throughout.
26th - #75 Wanted (Cinema) - Silly and dumb, but a fun watch. nothing more really.
30th - #76 The Mist (Download) - I liked this, but blimey, what a downbeat ending. I didn't see that coming. A "D'oh" moment to rule them all. Good film with some effective scares.

July
2nd - #77 Wall-E (Download) - Ooh, what a excellent film, even in naughty downloaded format. Can't wait to see this on the big screen.
6th - #78 Kung Fu Panda (Cinema) - The kids loved it. It wasn't as good as i hoped it would be, but still one of the best from Dreamworks animated films.
7th - #79 The Pixar Story (DVD) - Fascinating documentary which explains the wonders of the best modern movie studio around.
12th - #80 A Bug's Life (DVD) - Unfairly regarded as one of Pixar's worst by lots of people. This still holds up and Kevin Spacey does a great baddie.
12th - #81 Ratatouille (DVD) - I love all Pixar's films. This one especially, they dare to not stick to any fomula or pander to what audiences may want according to hollywood honchos. Who'd of thought that a film about a rat dreaming of being a chef would work? But it does.
12th - #82 Journey To The Centre Of The Earth 3D (Cinema) - More of a Disneyland attraction than a film. No villains, not much plot and not even a reason that they travel to the centre of the earth. Just a series of coincidences. Despite that though it's an enjoyable 3D fest. A solid family cinema experience. may not play so well on DVD though.
13th - #83 Batman Begins (DVD) - Always disliked the modern Batman movies, even the Tim Burton ones. Preferred the camp 60's version. But this is brilliant grown up stuff. More of a gangster movie than a superhero film. Love it. Can't wait for the sequel.
14th - #84 Hancock (Cinema) - I actually liked this a lot. It was a shame the tone from the beginning didn't last through to the end, but I didn't really know where it was going for most of the time. Good film, unfairly criticized in the media.
14th - #85 The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Cinema) - A strange one this. I thought it was better than the first film, but I'd still probably rather watch the first one. It just felt a bit too long and had me fidgeting in my seat during the second half. I think it would bore my kids. Oh and it was dark too. Not just in mood. For one extended battle scene which takes place at night i didn't have a clue what was going on for the most part.
18th - #86 Austin Powers: Goldmember (FilmFour) - Daft, but still funny.
19th - #87 Wall-E (Cinema) - A truly brilliant film. This will become an all time classic I'm sure.
20th - #88 Hot Fuzz (Sky Movies) - Endlessly rewatchable. Love the crazy action at the end.
23rd - #89 Baby Mama (Download) - I liked this. Shame it didn't get a bigger release. Smarter than your average romcom
24th - #90 The Dark Knight (Cinema) - Brilliant second installment. I loved it so much...
24th - #91 The Dark Knight (Cinema)...I saw it twice in the same day. Never done that before.
26th - #92 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (Sky+, FilmFour) - Still the funniest of the 3.
August
1st - #93 Baby Mama (Download) - Yep, still like it.
2nd - #94 Hancock (Download) - It's mostly good stuff, but the plot detour doesn't feel quite right, but fun all the same.
8th - #95 Breakdown (Dutch TV) - I love this movie
20th - #96 Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (Cinema) - Great blockbuster movie and surprisingly funny too.
22nd - #97 Somers Town (Cinema) - I'm a big fan of Shane Meadows, but I found this a let down. There seemed to be no real plot and certainly no reason to film in harsh black&white.
23rd - #98 Hellboy (Sky+, FIVE) - A reminder that the original is till good too.
23rd - #99 Midnight Run (Sky Movies) - One of my favourrites. This never gets old.
25th - #100 Daddy Day Care (TV, Fiver) - Why Why Why???
29th - #101 The Strangers (Cinema) - Actually pretty effective horror. Had me jumping in all the right places anyway. I even didn't mind the much criticised ending.
29th - #102 The Dark Knight (Cinema) - It's that man again. Still like it after 3 viewings, but not too sure about the boat sequence. could've been cut.
30th - #103 The Descent (Sky+) - Can't believe I've only just got round to seeing this. Liked it a lot.

September
3rd - #104 Get Smart (Cinema) - Much better than anticipated. Not too bad.
6th - #105 Final Destination 2 (Sky+) - Fun and harmless.
7th - #106 Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Cinema) - A bit all over the place and certainly not a real star wars film but it was mildly diverting and easilty as good as the phantom menace.
12th - #107 Eden Lake (Cinema) - Scary stuff, but didn't like the ending.
12th - #108 The Pineapple Express (Cinema) - Cluttered and messy. Funny in parts.
26th - #109 Vantage Point (DVD) - I do like this. A clever little thriller.
27th - #110 The Apartment (TV, Sky Movies) - Wow. Brilliant move seen for the first time by me at last. Didn't know much about it but glad I finally saw it. I prefer it to Some Like it Hot actually. Baxter is a great character,
30th - #111 Taken (Cinema) - Silly nonsense but not half as bad as you might think.
30th - #112 Tropic Thunder (Cinema) - Hmmm, pretty rubbish actually overall. Liked the spoof trailer at the beginning though, especially The Fatties.

October
9th - #113 There's Something About Mary (Sky+, Anytime) - Not seen for ages. i think it's aged really well. A good comedy. I like the abrupt ending.
11th - #114 No Country For Old Men (DVD) - Really like this film. In fact, I like it more each time I watch it.
13th - #115 How To Lose Friends and Alienate People (Cinema) - Enjoyed this. Made me laugh a lot more than Run, Fatboy Run.
16th - #116 Mirrors (Cinema) - awful script, awful acting. I really hated this film and thought there was some nasty uses of children in it too that i won't ever want to watch again. Poor.
17th - #117 Mamma Mia! (Download) - Surprisingly pretty good. Made me laugh a lot and the weirdest thing was, i enjoyed it more than my wife.
18th - #118 Eagle Eye (Cinema) - An enjoyable mix between Enemy of the State, I Robot & Bad Boys (the car chases), so more Smithian than Hitchcockian. Liked it a lot though.
20th - #119 Death Race (Cinema) - Despite loads of car chases and explosions, it was quite dull. I fell asleep too.
22nd - #120 Igor (Cinema) - Rubb-ish!
24th - #121 High School Musical 3 (Cinema) - Not my cup of tea exactly, but there's no denying that it does what it sets out to do and does it well. My 2 youngest loved it as did the starjumping group of pre-teen girls sat next to me. Forgettable fluff but harmless with it.

November
14th - #122 W. (Cinema) - Blimey, long time since I saw a film. That's university life for you. Well, at least my first assignment is now handed in. As way of a treat to myself on the way home from uni, i went to see this about George W Bush. It's had bad reviews, but I quite liked it. I have very little knowledge of Bush, just the odd thing, so I had no preconceptions going in. maybe that helped.
15th - #123 Disturbia (Sky Movies) - Second viewing and still this this is an enjoyable little movie. Like it.
15th - #124 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (DVD) - Maybe time will be kind to this as i certainly didn't hate it as much as the first cuple of times. that said, it's still fairly pants for an Indy film.
17th - #125 Burn After Reading (Cinema) - after many poor reviews I wan't hoping for much but was watching for curiosity value alone. However, I'm pleased that actually, I quite enjoyed it. I didn't find it very funny (just forget it's a comedy and you'll be ok) but i was entertained by the acting and the plot. So not as good as the Coens best, but nowhere near the worst either.
24th - #126 Blindness (Cinema) - an ordeal of a film. I have never felt the need to walk out of a film so much before, but i stuck with it. A big fan of fernando merseilles other films, i was very disappointed with Blindness.
27th - #127 Casino Royale (DVD) - I know, it's been out a couple of years, but i'm just watching it now. a brilliant action film. not usually a Bond fan, so was surprised how much i enjoyed this. hoping the sequel's as good.
27th - #128 Quantum of Solace (Cinema).. and it wasn't quite as good, but i still enjoyed it. the opening car chase was the best bit tho.
27th - #129 Changeling (Cinema) Mixed feelings about this. thought it was well acted and paced, but it is also a bit of a mess. Not bad though.
29th - #130 Bolt (Download) The first Disney CG movie which isn't a Pixar film that I've actually enjoyed. can't wait to see it in big screen 3D
30th - #131 Madagascar 2 (Cinema) - you know what? this wasn't half bad. i hated the first one, but apart from the bit where i fell asleep for 10 minutes, this kept me interested throughout.

December
27th - #132 Mama Mia (DVD) - December has been a very quiet month film-wise. I'm planning to watch a film a day next year, see if i can keep up. Anyway, my daughter got mamma mia for christmas so we watched the singalong version together. I still think its corny and silly, but great fun at the same time.
28th - #133 Hancock (DVD) - Yeah, still like this, but the massive change of tone halfway through still feels very odd.
29th #134 Yes Man (Cinema) A not bad Jim Carrey comedy, but i wish he wouldn't do so much gurning.
29th - #135 Wall-E (DVD) I still love this. A sublime film that I could've easily sat through again the moment it ended.
30th - #136 Slumdog Millionaire (Download) - A brilliant end to the year. Like a mix between City of God and Trainspotting. Emotional, funny, thrilling. Probabaly Danny Boyle's best film. It'd be great to see it win some Oscars.

Well that's that then. 62 cinema trips in the year, so that's my Unlimited card justified. Happy new year Empire!

05/03 - Hababam sinifi dokuz doguruyor (1978) --
04/03 - North by Northwest (1959)* -- A playful, exciting Hitchcock thriller. All in all this is a great mystery classic flick.
03/03 - Rambo (2008)* -- A bloody action movie where the action hero kills all the bad guys! Absolutely entertainment. An action feast for Rambo fans. My favourite RAMBO film
02/03 - Class Action (1991)* -- A Compelling in-and-out-of-the- courtroom drama. Worth a watch. Gene Hackman's brilliant.
FEBRUARY
23/02 - In the Valley of Elah (2007)* --

22/02 - Sunset Blvd. (1950)* --
22/02 - Charlie Wilson's War (2007)* --
21/02 - The Golden Compass (2007)* --
21/02 - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)* -- Great cast and the art direction was the best. Cut-throat vulgarity, the gore is a bit overused. Bad singing and very disappointing
21/02 - Michael Clayton (2007)* -- Intelligent, excellent writing. A well-worked thriller but not enough suspense and nothing really new or original
17/02 - Man On Fire(2004)* -- A really enjoyable and a good action film. One of the best revenge flicks. Worth seeing
11/02 - Bee Movie (2007)* -- A heart warming and fun film with pathetic plot and a stupid ending.
11/02 - Alvin And The Chipmunks (2007)*-- Heart felt and funny at times but not too good overall. Started off great, then became extremely annoying.
08/02 - Saw IV (2007)* -- Typical SAW feeling.Watchable horror film, but nothing spectacular. I got myself lost in the complexed strories to tell you the truth
05/02 - The Bucket List (2007)* -- A grand mixture of personality, grace, eccentricity. A heart warming story of friendship-strong male performances. Two cancer victims plan ahead. A movie which will stay with me forever
03/02 - Eastern Promises (2007)* -- Promises delivered. Deep in rich characterizations, unpretentious in style, perfect performances. Excellent.
02/02 - Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)* -- Grand cinematic style but overall not a great film. But nicely entertaining movie for history lovers.
02/02 - Juno (2007)* -- A very uninteresting teen pregnancy movie.Yes, this movie is overrated, too.Juno is neither very amusing nor pretty touching. It's just a film. Nothing special.
02/02 - I Am Legend (2007)* -- Movie starts off promising but end crappily.I AM Disappointed. Besides, the computer-made zombies are so fake.
01/02 - Atonement (2007)* -- Too chaotic and complicated story,it's Overrated. But cinematography, costume and art direction worked together nicely.
01/02 - No Country For Old Men (2007)* -- Nothing Special, no brilliance.OK it is well acted but I don't see it as a masterpiece....in fact it is boring.Lame ending.Uncomparable with Fargo !
JANUARY
25/01 - Phone Booth (2002) -- Really a smart, strong, tense, gripping, excellent high altitude enjoyable thriller. One of my most favourite psychological thriller films.
22/01 - Back To The Future II (1989) -- Excellent, simply excellent. Hilarious and full of suspense. A superb sequel that rules.
20/01 - 300 (2006) -- Rule No. 1: Never threaten a Spartan with death or slavery. An enjoyable, exciting film with a lot of excellent filming. Blood, Guts, Gore and Goodness. A Different and Unique Epic War Movie!

20/01 - Death Becomes Her (1992)* -- Occasionally hilarious and amusing, though never brilliant. A weird and very good dark comedy.
16/01 -  United 93 (2006) -- Powerful and moving.Harrowing from beginning to end.A Gut-wrenching and chilling reminder
13/01 - Manhatten (1979)* -- Good film, but definitely not "magical". I think it's Overrated.
13/01 - Scary Movie 4 (2006) -- You get what you expect. Hilarious Spoof Film, still manages to entertain.Don't listen to the critics.
12/01 - Deja Vu (2006) -- A competent, well-made action thriller with a few logistic issues, VERY exciting film
12/01 - The Island (2005) -- The Island...thrilling, intelligent and thought-provoking. Michael Bay's another Very entertaining action film
11/01 - The Ladykillers (1955)* -- A band of bank robbers plan to rob a bank and, posing as musicians, they rent a room from an old lady who inadvertently botches their plans. Not great but still a darkly enjoyable comedy

06/01 - Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) -- A wonderful story of friendship and dishonor among thieves.Guy Ritchie's Hilarious Feature Debut
06/01 - Delta Farce (2007)* -- This movie sucked!Horrible slapstick. This movie is PAINFUL, RACIST, and DUMB
06/01 - Dances with Wolves (1990)* (director's cut, 250 min.) --   A moving experience of film as true art
06/01 - Boyz n the Hood (1991)* -- A powerful, tragic film about the ghetto and wonderful character development

05/01 - Fast Track / The Ex (2006)* -- Not particularly good, but very funny in places. Zach is great though
03/01 - Sleepy Hollow (1999)* -- Fabulous, bloodthirsty, funny,eEvocative horror story about a headless horseman  02/01 - Saw III (2006)* -- Not as good as the first two but still a good gore horror film
02/01 - Unser Planet (2006)* --
An OK doc about our Planet

01/01 - Peter's Friends (1992)* -- An enjoyable and delightful reunion film

Film of the Month in Red

January

Cinema
3rd The Kite Runner 8 - One of the most depressing films I have seen but equally there are great performances and Forster judges the pace and the tension well.
6th Se Jie (Lust, Caution) 8 - Superbly emotive performance from Tang Wei and a beautiful score work well in this WW2 drama but it lacks the narrative drive to make this a truly great film.
10th Enchanted 8 - I must admit that I didn't fancy this much to begin with but you would have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy it by the end.  Amy Adams gives a very winning performance and none of the cast put a foot wrong.  The 2D animation does a good job of making the cartoon characters look like their real life equivalent and the songs are catchy.
12th No Country For Old Men 10 - Beautifully shot, well acted, dark but darkly comic in the same instance, this is a elegaic modern Western.  In Chigurh, Javier Bardem has produced a character who will be remembered for a long time to come and Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Kelly Macdonald are all superb.
13th Charlie Wilson's War 8 - Somewhat uneven in tone between flag waving serious issue piece and knock-about comedy but it is nice to see an intelligent well thought out comedy.  Tom Hanks is back on form as Representative Charlie Wilson and gets well-rounded support from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams (who is evolving into a superb comic actress).
14th Before The Devil Knows You're Dead 8 - An acting tour de force with particularly strong performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney and good support from Ethan Hawke and Marisa Tomei.  The story is a bit thin but it allows the actors to shine.
18th 4 Luni, 3 Saptamami si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) 9 - Gripping but grim with a superb performance from Anamaria Marinca.
23rd Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story 6 - Some parts are hilarious but others fall flat particularly when jokes get overused. Some of the writing, particularly in the earlier sections is too sloppy and choppy.  John C. Reilly gives a performance of depth and incredible vocal talent as Dewey Cox.
26th In The Valley of Elah 8 - Tommy Lee Jones anchors this weighty murder-mystery/police procedural film as the father looking for his missing son.  The story is effective as is Lee Jones' transformation through the film.  Sarandon and Theron give excellent support.
28th Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 9 - More enjoyable than I expected with fantastic visuals from Tim Burton and a quality leading performance from Johnny Depp who totally inhabits his role.  Shame Helena Bonham Carter can't sing!

Home
2nd Monty Python's Life of Brian 8 - The jokes come so fast that if you don't get one, five more will come thick and fast which knock you down.
4th Timeline 3 - Weak acting, dull plotting and really cheap production values make this film a massive disappointment.
6th Next 5 - Run of the mill sci-fi action film with Cage giving his typical performance.  Poor CGI undermines the film.
6th The Ladykillers (1955) 7 - Alec Guinness is the main draw in this Ealing comedy which probably suffers slightly from copies and send-ups which have happened over the years.  Benefits from a strong cohesive narrative and comic script.
11th The Witches of Eastwick 6 - Campy 80's comedy which suffers from an over-egged gurning performance from Jack Nicholson.  The chemistry between the female leads however is good.
12th Velvet Goldmine 7 - An interesting and stylish look at the 70s glam-rock scene from Todd Haynes which features good performances from Rhys Meyers and McGregor.  Unfortunately, it is not one of Christian Bale's best.
12th A Fish Called Wanda 7 - Clever comedy from John Cleese which features great comic performances from Palin, Curtis, Kline and Cleese.  A tad madcap at times but often laugh out loud funny.
13th Payback 4 - Exploitative and unconvincing revenge thriller in which Mel Gibson can't quite convince us he's all bad.  Tonally all over the place and so many characters are introduced, it's dizzying.  In short, a mess.
13th Bend It Like Beckham 7 - A fun chick-flick which is watchable even for blokes.  Lots of chemistry between Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley and the supporting cast are equally good.
17th Alien 9 - Gets increasingly claustrophobic and gripping with a terrific performance from Signourney Weaver.
18th Summer of Sam 6 - Lacks the panache of Do The Right Thing and makes a few missteps along the way but catches the period well.
19th Titus 3 - A hideous camp mess with wild overacting and distraxted anachronism.  Anthony Hopkins is the only person who comes out with any credit.
19th Death on the Nile 7 - Clever Agatha Christie adaptation which features good cinematography and period detail and Peter Ustinov makes a fantastically convivial Poirot.  Formulaic as one would expect from this type of adaptation.
20th Bride and Prejudice 6 - Some of the Bollywood dance scenes are spectacular but the film is only just above average.  Benefits from being slightly brainless fun.
20th Creep 4 - The premise is promising and Franka Potente is a good scream queen but the film takes a turn towards the Hostel-esque gorno genre towards the end and undoes its good work.
27th Breakfast at Tiffany's 8 - Engaging romance with a terrific nuanced performance from Audrey Hepburn in the lead role.  George Peppard makes a good foil for Hepburn as her leading man.  Only Mickey Rooney's offensive Japanese stereotype grates.
27th Tombstone 6 - I found this film somewhat unengaging and Kurt Russell lacked the necessary presence as Wyatt Earp.  Val Kilmer was impressive though as Doc Holliday.
29th Fantastic Four 4 - Crap villian with very little in the way of motivation, weak performances from Jessica Alba and Ioan Gruffud and disjointed CGI.  There are some elements but these mostly come from Chris Evans.
30th The Running Man 6 - So very 80s and Arnie is in full on cheesy mode.  Has lost its effect as a result of the rise of reality television but still an interesting watch.

February

Cinema
2nd Juno 9 - The dialogue is some of the sharpest of any recent cinema release and Ellen Page does a fantastic job as the lackadaisical Gen-Y schoolgirl.  Don't underestimate Jennifer Garner, Michael Cera and Alison Janney though.  A hard film to dislike.
2nd Cloverfield 8 - Well thought out and well made but the human characters are not entirely convincing although you do start to care about them.  Wears its 9/11 references on its sleeve but this is not necessarily a bad thing.
6th Things We Lost in the Fire 5 - Shame that the writing is so poor because both Halle Berry and, in particular, Benecio del Toro perform well with what they have and Susanne Bier's direction fits with the storyline.
9th There Will Be Blood 9 - A real powerhouse performance from Daniel Day Lewis which is surprisingly matched by Paul Dano.  The score, narrative and direction are also equally striking to produce a quality film.
12th National Treasure: Book of Secrets 6 - Entertaining but so cliched and more or less a rehash of the first movie.  Cage and Bartha have the charisma to make the double act work but Harris's character is pretty poorly written and this damages the final act.

Home
1st Outbreak 6 - Cheesy virus drama with Dustin Hoffman in shouty mode and Kevin Spacey in ginger mode.
3rd The Negotiator 7 - Brain off crime thriller with Kevin Spacey in familiar territory and Samuel L. Jackson as a hostage negotiator turned hostage taker.  Not a classic but enjoyable nevertheless.
3rd Three Days of the Condor 6 - Somewhat pedestrian spy thriller in which Robert Redford is a bookish CIA agent who can't quite convince when required to turn on the nasty.
4th Imagine Me and You 2 - Smug, vacuous British romantic comedy which seeks to differentiate itself by being about lesbians.  Utterly pointless.
5th Ladder 49 5 - Cliched firefighter story with Phoenix and Travolta in stock character mode with some good fire effects destroyed by some appalling CGI (think 80s kids TV program Knightmare).
10th Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) 7 - A very striking film from Tom Tykwer that muses on the effect of things which you could have done differently.  Franka Potente does well as the running woman along with Moritz Bleibtrau as her troubled boyfriend.
11th Leaving Las Vegas 8 - Nicolas Cage excels as an alcoholic who goes to Las Vegas to drink himself to death whilst Elisabeth Shue is given her finest role as a pro seeking to redeem Cage.  Mike Figgis' direction adds to the experience.
11th My Beautiful Laundrette 8 - Stephen Frears' seminal 80s drama about being different in Thatcher's Britain may feel somewhat dated but still provides plenty of entertainment particularly from Daniel Day Lewis.

THE BIRRELL'S 2008 CINEMA DIARY (I am always right)

5/5 A film that goes above and beyond the call of duty to become something magnificent.
4/5 Does everything it sets out to do and to a high standard. Minor weaknesses.
3/5 A good film, but some large weaknesses bring it down.
2/5 Dissapointing, consistently misses the mark but not utterly without merit.
1/5 A horrid piece of celluloid trash, should not be viewed by anyone.

JANUARY
ENCHANTED 4/5 A charming fantasy adventure; just about self aware enough to create a funny parody without becoming condenscending to the films that inspired it. Amy Adams is terrific!
I AM LEGEND 4/5 Will Smith proves himself to be more than capable of carrying a whole film, a satisfying amount of bleakness helps create the emptied New York; in itself a fascinating sight. However the appalling CG vampires almost ruin it, a dark spot on what could have been a 5/5 film.
BEE MOVIE 3/5- It is quite often funny, but the jokes seemed to be aimed at adults rather than children, which seems strange in a what is essentially a kid's film. Also the main character lacks charm and can come across more annoying then likeable.
I'M NOT THERE 4/5- Although I sense my enjoyment was somewhat hampered by my lack of knowledge for Bob Dylan himself this is still a very interesting piece. It goes to surreal places without overdoing it and the performances are brilliant.
ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM 2/5- You must understand, I'm giving this film 2 marks rather than 1 because I'm generous and there's some funny gore. Otherwise this is a boring, poorly shot, cliched and badly acted piece of cinema shit. If like me you really like the Alien or Predator series, you'd be better off just sitting at home pouring acid on your face as it's a much better and more satisfying experience.
SWEENEY TODD 5/5- Oh yes! This is it, Burton releases a masterpiece of quality not seen from him since Edward Scissorhands. A wonderful film that balances violence, brilliant music and heart rending moments to enormous effect.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN 5/5- Another five star slice of cinematic awesome.Unpredictable, clever and most and best of all, frightening. Once you've seen Javier Bardem you will never forget him.
FEBRUARY
THE MATRIX 5/5- Although viewed theatrically, the Matrix films will not be taken into the final scores at the end of 2008 because of their original release dates. An amazing film, as intelligent as it is action-packed. Unforgettable.
THE MATRIX RELOADED 4/5- Many, many subplots and characters are introduced which makes the film feel bloated, however the thrills still provide a brilliant film.
THE MATIX REVOLUTIONS 5/5- A thrilling end to a thrilling trilogy, everything is wrapped up neatly and the epic sense of tragedy really lends itself to the story.
CLOVERFIELD 5/5- Frightening, original and engaging. A nihilistic slice of awesome that needs to be watched multiple times to catch all the details.
JUNO 5/5- A charming comedy and drama, touching and with an excellent performance by Ellen Page.
JUMPER 2/5- A badly scripted sci-fi mess, the plot is wafer thin and the main character very unlikable, it plods along with little interest and no depth. Not worth the money.
RAMBO 4/5- Insanely violent as well as endlessly entertaining, on par with 2, better than 3 but nowhere near as good as First Blood.
MARCH
THE ORPHANAGE 5/5- Generally frightening, instantly gripping and exciting. There is also quite a few tear jerking moments as well.
THE SPIDER-WICK CHRONOCHILES 4/5- A good old fashioned horror film for kids, inventive amd exciting, sometimes gets over wrought with camp acting and rickety CG but overall a fun adventure.
APRIL
STREET KINGS 4/5- Keanu Reeves best performance to date. Other brilliant performances abound (Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie) and complement the dark, nihilisic mood. Part character study, part mystery, the script does become a tad busy under all the different plot, twists that are used to mixed effect but the film remains taut, violent and exciting.
IN BRUGES 5/5- Darkly funny with some of the most cracking dialogue heard this year, wonderful characters and shot with a claustrophic style that complments the eerie city of Bruges as well as it's melancholy score.
IRON MAN 4/5-A good origin story, Robert Downey Jr chews up the screen with his formidable ability in portraying Tony Stark, great action sequences with a punch to the mouth score, however suffers from a weak villian and weak final confrontation and doesn't have the darkness or complexity of either Spider-man or Batman begins.
MAY
SPEED RACER 3/5- Absolutly insane visuals, enough to trigger a seizure. It's a lot of fun and completly un-realistic, it does shoe-horn some decent morals in but should be appreciatted as the living cartoon that it is.
INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL 4/5- Although it features eyebrow raising moments this is near flawless action movie making, Harrison Ford can still pull it off ad the supporting players work tremendously too. Well paced with some terrific set pieces.
JUNE
SUPERHERO MOVIE 1/5- Absolutly atrocious, appaling in every way. This film is a symbol of the downfall of society as we know it, how a comedy can be so consistently unfunny is beyond me. So far the worst film viewed at the cinema this year.
THE INCREDIBLE HULK 3/5- Entertaining and amusing but a step down from Ang Lee's version, some fun action but a suprisingly dissapointing final battle, more adequate than incredible.
THE HAPPENING 3/5- Some good ideas, some executed well but a significant portion done poorly. Too unintentional funny to take seriously with some questionable performances. However there is a definite mood carried throughout with one or two effective scares.
