SPOILERS (I guess some people haven't seen it yet)

A.I. is a good film imo, it just suffers from DES: Double Ending Syndrome.

It's obvious the film should have ended underwater with that bittersweet blue fairy but it just had to give us another ending. There's a film which could do with a Director's Cut.

It's just like Wall-E which should have ended with our little robot lobotomised due to a fried chip and left to do what it was always meant to do: clean up the trash. Forgetting everything about Eva and saving the world. I feel a manly tear coming on just thinking about how depressing that film could have been...

Absolutely, positively, 100% NOT guilty. In fact, IMO it's an absolutely flawless masterpiece... that said, I can see why people don't appreciate it.

I'm fairly certain that the finished film is the director's cut.

No, forget the whole "Cut" thing. I meant I'm right about how the film should have ended.

And I guess if it was Kubrick's idea to keep going after the Blue Fairy scene, if there was a Director's Cut now...then Spielberg would have to do it. And technically he was director too...Therefore...my suggestion is still somewhat valid! HA!

I completely disagree that ending the film there, with David trapped underwater forever, pleading for something that will never come, would be the right way. That's no ending, it's an anticlimax - the story needs a resolution, both for his sake and for the story. And so there is an ending - David gets his wish but only for one day, and only with the illusion of his mother, with the illusion of love. It's superficially a happy ending for him but in reality it's incredibly bleak.

Hm, I dunno, sure the actual ending is bleak but it drags on forever after what would have been an already bleak ending so I just didn't feel like it was necessary. Perhaps a final voice-over Minority Report-style after the Blue Fairy ending but not a whole other long-winded bit like the actual ending has...Jeez...

Hmm, hard to call. There is so much brilliance I suppose not guilty but on the other hand the film tries so hard to force you to feel, it seems to ram its emotion down your throat.
Still the good does outweigh the bad.

As it's the only film I've walked out of during the past 10 years, I've got to say guilty. I'm just grateful for the fact that I had a free pass to it, so I didn't waste my money, just my time.

Kubrick said he was never going to direct, the plan was always for Spielberg to do that and Kubrick would write and produce.

Just about. Apart more of sex and violence (for a film involving gigolo robots, murder etc) and less jokey scenes. Speilberg has defended this POV that people have (due to his past work) by saying his stuff is the some of the darker elements rather than the sentimental parts which were Kubrick's. Watched it again recently, still not guilty. Creepy, thought provoking and great effects. Still has problems, in pacing and structure, but not a bad film. Great performance from 'David', and always good to see some quality animatronics.

Edit: still have the LOL at anyone mentioning aliens in this thread

When I do the assignment, the robot cannot already exist. However, if somebody would be so kind as to write an example, they may want to write it based on a robot that already exists, to ensure that I can't plagiarise their work.

I actually agree on that. The ending should have been where David sits in his vessel and finally faces the Blue Fairy. The film is entertaining enough and very well made but lacks focus and more worryingly: imagination. Great setpieces, great ideas but somehow it never really comes together as a whole. But not guilty.

I have a couple of issues with this film. Firstly the main thing that is on my mind is what was Kubrick's original vision for the film and did Speilberg's spin on it do the original vision justice? From watching other Kubrick films I imagine a Kubrick-Speilberg produced film may have been a lot darker and gritty. I don't know why but Teddy had Kubrick wrtten all over him!

My other issue was the ending. I think the term WTF is quite fitting here! Everything was fine, robot abandoned, community of unwanted robots hunted to be used in a series of events for the publics entertainment. Next thing we're under water and some aliens arrive and grant the wish of being with his mother for eternity. The whole ending just left me deflated.

I think a lot of people either forget or simply don't know that the ending was Kubrick's, not just Spielberg's.
