 Unquestionably not guilty...
It's a minor masterpiece in my opinion...
Despite what anyone may claim is very faithful to Kubrick's original vision of the project,while retaining an extremely personal touch from Spielberg...
John Williams' score is sublime too...
It's quite possibly more poignant if you have children...

 Overall, I really enjoyed A.I. and for the most part consider it a strong contribution to cinema. After reading some of the responses in this thread I've thought about the ending a little differently and I see the point (the one about David and the audience being spoon-fed a happy ending before his "death") and even appreciate it. From a storytelling standpoint this is a rather clever dynamic, intentional or not. The problem is that no matter how clever it may be, the last half hour is dreadfully dull. Had it ended with him at the bottom of the sea with the Blue Fairy I think it would have been a much stronger film.

Flawed, but still good.

 A rather boring, pointless and overdrawn film.
Joe does my tits in and Haley Joel Osmand's character is creepily annoying.
And the aliens...wtf?
The bear was the best thing in the whole movie!

I know it has a number of flaws (which are mainly on Spielberg's part) but I really like this film. I give it a not guilty vote.

I yawned all the way through until the last 20 minutes were I wanted to smash the TV. Some great ideas but I found it tedious, over-long & generally dull.

I completely agree....duller than a grey sock that has been through the wash a few too many times. I gave it a chance and it had its moments, but this is one film film i just could not get on with.

....However, I do not believe that this film is representative of Spielbergs genius, talent and creativity. He is one of my favourite directors and a great visionary.

This film was terrible....
I saw no components of actual story telling, It just meandered on and finished.

There is an actual line where speilberg took over kubrick and they just went into opposite directions. Jude Laws Character could and should have been awesome, but had a major flaw - Jude law!

this film just didn't have any point to it, there was just no real conclusion just like bicentennial man I was left thinking "so why did they make that"?

 I voted not guilty, but with some reservations. Probably need to give it a proper watch again. I think it's kind of de riguer to hate A.I. Yes, there is some silly sentimental stuff, and I'm not sure if Gigalo Joe really works, but there is a genuine sense of wonder about it, some creepy moments, some very effective FX  (The late Stan Winston's Teddy is incredible, the spinach making the boy's face go wonky, etc.), and I also have to admit it was very moving in places, particularly when his mother abandons him and the ending-which has been much criticised. Of course, it was Kubrick and not Spielberg who actually wanted the 'soppy' stuff in, not that that makes it okay, but...I dunno, I did find the ending quite moving. I didn't think it was quite so phoney or sentimental as people attacked it for.

As much as I disagree with AI's ending and as much as I wish things had ended heartbreakingly in that water...The rest of the film does balance things out and what is left is an intelligent, visually stunning, touching sci-fi story. No masterpiece and flawed, yes, but by no means a pushover.

Yeah exactly, human emotions in a robot. Handled too lightly by the film in my opinion.

 Definately not guilty, Spielberg did a fantastic job all things considered. It was very brave of him to take on from Kubrick, of course there are going to be people who disagree with the merit of the film but personally I really enjoyed it.

Which is exactly the problem with the film.

David is a Robot child and as such absolutely nothing like a real child. Childhood is the time we spend growing and maturing emotionally and mentally into the people we are as adults.

Agreed!

I'm a sci-fi fan and the idea of "what is emotion?, can we create a robot that feels emotion?" - is a truly interesting subject and one worthy of debate. However I think this question wasn't discussed at all in A.I. We were just presented with a robot and told "He does feel emotion - isn't he cute and sad?" - there was no debate of the subject at all.

It would have been more interesting if the story focussed on the mother, and her questioning herself over whether he's real and whether it's right for her to feel love for something that is essentially made from metal and plastic. He's a computer!! If David looked like a laptop and not like a boy, you wouldn't be shedding a tear for him. It's pure melodrama - he looks cute so it provokes feelings of sadness and protectiveness in the audience when we see him searching for the fairy, but we're never made to ask ourselves "why do we feel sorry for a lump of metal?"

I agree that it was stunning to look at, and the ending didn't bother me. It was a nice sci-fi movie about a robot, but this film doesn't really look at the philosophy of A.I. at all and was therefore a big letdown for me.

GUILTY!
