1. Army In The Shadows (1969, Jean Pierre Melville)
2. Paths Of Glory (1957, Stanley Kubrick)
3. La Grande Illusion (1937, Jean Renoir)
4. Apocalypse Now (1979, Francis Ford Coppola)
5. Come And See (1985, Elem Klimov)
6. The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957, David Lean)
7. Rome, Open City (1945, Roberto Rossellini)
8. Saving Private Ryan (1998, Steven Spielberg)
9. All Quiet On The Western Front (1930, Lewis Milestone)
10. Wings (1927, William A Wellman)

Something like that.

I'm not including Schindler's List as it feels like more of a drama film than war, especially since there is no opposing side, it's genocide not technically war, if there were no German uniforms in it, it might not be labelled a 'war' film.  I suppose the same can be said about Lawrence Of Arabia, but whilst there are opposing sides, it's main genre seems to be drama.  I wish I could include The Thin Red Line but oh well.  I'm not a big fan of Platoon and I haven't seen Where Eagles Dare and Born On The Forth Of July.

Cross Of Iron is brilliant, probably just outside my top 10.

I understand what you mean, but I prefer to simplify things to one main genre for the purposes of lists like these. The imdb has The Good, The Bad And The Ugly as a war film (or at least used to), I suppose you could say that but when you have lists of all different genres you'll just end up with the same films inheriting top spaces.  It's not the end of the world if you do include them though.
