 Maybe I exaggerated slightly, but a song as well-written and with as good a chord structure as Hurt was always going to turn out well if performed by anyone with basic musical competence.  A good pop song is a good pop song (and I mean pop in the verse-chorus-verse, simple chord progression sense).  It's worth remembering that Nine Inch Nails' original and David Bowie's cover are also fantastic songs.

My point was that we shouldn't suddenly swoon at the feet of the otherwise decidedly average Johnny Cash because of a good cover he performed.

Which is why I refined my point with "anyone with basic musical competence" could have made Hurt sound good.

Since you bring up Pop Idol though, how far do you think Bob Dylan would have got if he'd entered?  Yet his fabulously crafted songs sound excellent, and have spawned some very good covers.

 Oh absolutely, but pop idol and its bastard offspring have never had anything to do with music, its all about packaging, nothing more.  Doesn't matter how good the song is tho, someone out there can screw it up...

 Not so much unpopular as just my general opinions on music.

Soul Music from the 60's was the absolute peak of musical brilliance.

Bruce Springsteen is the greatest thing to come out of America...ever.

Except Johnny Cash.

The Who were the best band on the planet and we will never see any band emulate their musical genius.

Listening to Led Zeppelin makes me want to rip off my ears, they sound like cats dying.  Except Tangerine, which is their best song bar none.

Stairway to Heaven IS NOT the best song ever written.  My 9 year old brother could write better nonsense.

Fall Out Boy are actually a pretty decent band.

Oasis were not shit, but they are not the best thing since sliced bread either.

Steps were fucking awesome, as were S Club 7

Les Miserables, being one of the most successful musicals ever written and performed is criminally overlooked due to the fact that Webber has saturated the Stage Musical world with his godawful talentless bilge.

Love Tractor, Pylon and Flat Duo Jets were infinetly better than REM and the rest of the Athens, GA scene.

 I like Genesis, a bit of Elton John and The Police.

Also I think Rage Against The Machine's "Maggie's Farm" may be better than Dylan's. Also I prefer Dylan's "All Around the Watchtower" to Hendrix's

 Sting is better off with The Police, his solo efforts are pretty dire.

The Sex Pistols should not have reformed.  Sure, Never Mind the Bollocks is still relevant, but John Lydon is an embarrassment.  That said, the other members are brilliant.

So you don't like them which is your call - but pretty much every band who have recorded music in the last 40 years have been influenced by The Beatles, so i'm not entirely sure how they're irrelevant.

I think that they can be seen to be irrelevant because The Beatles are a product of their time, even though people know and love their music today.

 Bruce Springsteen is one of the, no, IS the greatest live act in the world

No one has ever made Seven albums in a row that are all amazing except Bruce Springsteen

Nils Lofgren is one of the greatest guitarists working today

The Smiths are the last British band to ever write really really important music, lyrically and musically.

Modest Mouse are the best band working today... and radiohead (but thats obvious)

Cass Mccombs deserves everyones attention.

The Music industry was dying for another Oasis... the Arctic Monkeys are not the answer. They have been over hyped and promoted because there is no one else. Dancefloor aside, they're not that great.

Okay this one I have to dispute... because of the Beatles, Some would argue they never made a bad album, I say let it be was a poor album, made up by let it be.. naked, but anyway, even if you just go from A hard days night you easily reach 7 albums in a row of amazing stuff. Though I do struggle to think of anyone else right now. And you may not be a beatles fan.. for shame

 ok fair point, in fairness i am imensley biased toward Bruce i am a beatles fan ( i mean try growing up in liverpool and being into guitar based music, it knda comes with it) but maybe one day i will get into them majorly. As for cass mccombs... thank god someone else appreciates him.well done

 Weezer are crap.

Antics IS by far, without a doubt, hands down, Interpol's best album ever.

Interpol's Our Love To Admire is rather crap.

Faith No More's cover of Easy is my all-time favourite cover-version of any song. Although I never really like FNM

Efrim Menuck is a god, um pretty much everyone involved with GY!BE are gods...

U2 were once good, but now they suck.

Green Day are crap.

Cult Of Luna are arguably one of the best bands of the decade.

Kid A is the greatest album ever made.

Spiderland is one of the most important albums ever made. It's also one of the best ever.

Slint's debut Tweez is terrible. Makes you realise how genius Spiderland is.

Glenn is one of the best songs ever.

Grails is the best band in the world

BORIS is awesome.

I Love Neurosis. Nobody else I know does.

PELICAN's City Of Echoes is hugely overrated. Talks of it being their best? Bah! The drumming threw me off completely on City Of Echoes....

Oasis are crap.

Queen is the most overrated band of all-time.

Laughing Stock is by far Talk Talk's best album. Um so is Spirit Of Eden.

Red Hot Chili Peppers suck ass. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is easily their best.

The Seven Mile Journey are the next GY!BE

Fly Pan Am are great.

Akuma No Uta is one of my all-time favourites....

Blink 182 are a bunch of wankers. They're not funny, they may choose to believe that they are, but they're clearly not. Also Angels And Airwaves is one of the worst bands ever shat out of society.
