I acually quite enjoyed Superman Returns the first time I saw it. Great effects, great entertainment. I do think it missed the point though. Singer wanted to make a homage to the old Superman films but really what's the point of doing that? I would have been happy with a Superman film which had NOTHING to do with the Christopher Reeve ones (as much as I like the first 2 films).

Spacey looked the part but the character was once again reduced to comic relief and a ridiculous storyline. Routh did his best but he was just too bland and too young for the role. On top of that Lois lacked personality and felt miscast.

A real shame because the film itself was pretty entertaining.

Not perfect but Not Guilty IMO, it was still way better than a lot of blockbusters out there.

 Always loved this movie but saw it again recently and i have to say some of the criticisms it gets is warranted . Improvements could have been made with some of the characterisations and the dialogue . One Character that needed an injection of zest was of course Lois who seemed a shadow of her former self , she needed some feistyness . They could have made Kal Penns persona a kind of Computer Geek who was a bit say .... loopy . In fact all the henchmen could have done with a few lines , they were all too silent . The whole movie requires an injection of dialogue and more interesting characterisation .

 This film is a textbook example of how to fuck up a well-established franchise. It contributes absolutely nothing valid to the SUPERMAN mythos. I hate, hate, HATE this film!
  • Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane - WORST CASTING EVER.
  • Kevin Spacey mincing it up as Lex Luthor was just BORING.
  • what the FUCK was that whole 'sub-plot' about the kid?
  • with all the endless comic storylines featuring some seriously awesome villains, there is no excuse - Superman didn't fight ANYONE.
  • The only thing that resembled an action set piece was Superman saving a falling plane. whoop-de-fuckin'-doo!
  • why was James Marsden even in this film?

Watched it again last night and stand by my comments. Singer has created a great film and overall enjoyable and soulful blockbuster with a lot of heart that's miles away from the crash, bang shallow template for summer blockbusters these days. Singer's subtle directorial flourishes are superb but will be lost on those who go to see a film waiting for the next explosion.

 It had very good point and very bad pints in my opinion!

Good Points:
Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman

The action sequences - especially the reintroduction of Superman in the Plane scene. It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

The original score.

The overall feel and tone of the movie

When they beat the shit out of Superman on the Kryptonite island - a very hard scene to watch IMO.


Bad Points:
 
Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane - truly awful

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor - Nothing on Gene Hackman

Parker Posey - Why would anybody cast her in anything!

Lack of humour - it played such a big part in the first two original films (the Christopher Revve ones!!)

It was missing at least one more big set peice

No new villains.

It didn't have this guy......



VERDICT: *HUNG JURY!....I cant decide!

*If pushed, I would have to say guilty i'm afraid! It could've been so much more!

Because he wasnt a leading character in the X men films and was completely sidelined in X2. There are some sugestions had singer stayed with Xmen there would be a 2 part Phoneix story with cyclops getting a lot more to do. Singer left, Marsden knew that story wouldnt go through so he left and got a better offer.

Granted he wasnt a superhero but he got more to do in that film than he did in both Xmen films and IMO i think he was the best thing about Returns.

Marsden was playing Superman just without the powers, hence Lois hooking up with him because that's her type. A nearly impossible type of man who is perfect in most respects.

 James Marsden was ok - even the problems with Bosworth and Spacey could have been overlooked if they hadn't made it such a leaden experience. After X1 + 2 I was pretty suprised Singer made something so boring, he certainly has an eye for super-hero action

James Marsden was playing the hero of the piece a man who even without Super powers would go out of his way to save a potential love rival and put himself in harms way. He was far more heroic than the slightly creepy Superman as portrayed in this film.

James Marsden's a pretty underrated actor. He was great fun in Enchanted, Sex Drive, Hairspray and the X Men films (although his...Treatment in the 3rd one still makes my blood boil).

Plus he's in The Box. And The Box kicks ass

There is potential for a great Superman movie out there and it DOESN'T have to have any nods and winks at the old movies.

 I'm checking out Lovefilm for the Doomsday animated movie - is it the animated version of the Death of Superman comics?

EDIT : It isn't according to Lovefilm which is a shame, it's got Adam Baldwin, Anne Heche and James Marsters doing the voices

 That would be the one although the voice actors aren't a patch on those they used in the WB animated series. It is based on The Death of Superman although it tries to squeeze the return in as well (less successfully).

Watched this film again at the weekend and thought yet again that Empire's five star review was a travesty.

Most of the movie is simply dull, there is no other way to describe it.

That is until the end which is unbelieavably preposterous.

It is a three star movie at the very best and that is due only to a few decent scenes in the beginning and middle and Brandon as Superman.

Too obvious!

Anyway, the Animated Universe got it right.  Wonder Woman and Bats all the way!


On topic, I liked this when I first saw it, but it was opening night and for me was film three in a Superman Marathon.  Seen it since and while I don't have a problem with island of Kryptonite (of course he can man-up and lift it.  He's freakin' Superman!)  The film is just dull.

No I enjoyed it, the acting was a bit wooden, and some scenes a little over done, but still good effects, nice twist on the story and Spacy was great.

its funny - in the build up to it coming out and indeed when it did come out i was convinced it was a great film...a worthy sequel to Superman I and II...i was such a big fan of the Reeve films i overlooked any flaws...(teenage Lois, superkid, land loving Lex...again, overall dullness, nonsensical crystal plot, over mournful feel, virtual remake of STM)

now....i still kind of like it but much prefer the real Superman III...was much more fun and the junkyard scrap slams anything in SR...

funny what a blitz of publicity, hype, nostalgia and a 'can do no wrong' director can do...

Empire mustve been similarly taken in - gave it an AOTC style ***** stars...yet Batman Begins & Casino Royale (far superior films) only got ****

looking foward to nolans reboot...time for a completly new take (with SR sitting nicely in the 13 disc dvd set as a curious, well made homage film to the Reeve films)

 It's a boring rehash with too much soft focus camera effects, a ridiculous child plot and nothing that's any better than the Donner original which it seems to want to be a sequel to, but is secretly a crappy remake. The only good part is the opening credits. GUILTY
