Not guilty. It's a great film, with some excellent moments, but it's not perfect. I admit I was blown away when I first saw it, but in retrospect it has some pretty big faults. The biggest, I reckon, is its reverence to Richard Donner's Superman; a great film, back then, but it would have been much better to start a whole new franchise. I think it's a bit like Jackson's Kong, funnily enough; both are very good films with some terrific moments, but both are a trifle over-indulgent and are, essentially, fan-films that appeal most to the person who made them (Jackson always wanted to make Kong, Singer loved the Donner Superman). They could both have done with a bit of objectivity. Also, they're both films I gushed about in five-star fashion on release, only to realise they're not that great some time later (four-stars for both, I'd say). Whilst it would be nice to see what Singer has planned for that universe, part of me would rather - if DC are insistent on a Justice League movie - start again from scratch. Maybe keep Routh, though, he was terrific.
