Billed as the most expensive film in Hollywood history I thought it was a good idea to mention it . A love story between Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the Roman leaders Julius Caesar . with a budget of 44M  big sets and took nearly two years to film no wonder this is the most important movie in hollywood history . A six hour movie cut down just to four .

That's a bit of a bold statement. Plus I've underlined it too.

It's one of the last great Epics, and the story of the making is just as Epic, and the love afair between Burton and Talyor on and off screen, make this one of the greatest Hollywood storys.Yet it was made mainly in Pinewood.

Is it any good though... I'm on a bit of a Roman history bender and I'm considering picking up the 3-Disc Special Edition set.

Is it on par with Ten Commandments and Ben Hur in terms of scale?

It has a lot scale...yet it all feels very stage bound.

The Making Of Documentary is on the other hand, fantastic.

I like most historical epics but I found Cleopatar a bit dull to be honest, some huge crowd scenes but little spectacle otherwise, with the main sea battle being hardly shown, and I didn't really care much about the characters either!  It was a long time ago when I saw it though, maybe I'll take another look.

Well it's cheap like the budgie on Amazon, so I might pick it up with I Claudius... next time I get paid.

I have the 3-disc DVD set. It's well worth a look!

I ended up watching this on a plane the other day, and though it did drag (especially after the Battle of Actium), I would very much like to see the rumoured six hour cut with more Roddy McDowell as Octavian.

I can see why it cost so much, the sets and costumes were very impressive, it's just a shame some of the casting was a bit off. Namely Burton as Anthony. I felt so much of his story was clearly cut out.

The film would have benefitted greatly by not cutting so much of shiny Germanicus out.

You should watch the Making Of - much more fun!

It's a bit of a mess in places but it is a great example of the final years of the golden age of Hollywood along
with Ben Hur. 20th century fox nearly went under as they kept pumping money into it. Cinema would look a lot differnt these days if they went bankrupt at the time. Liz Taylor looks fantastic but some of the acting is a bit dodgy in places. Overall though it's a great film.

Its a film I've never seen and though I'm not too fond of the leads was always going to get around watching. Its on Sky atm and the HD remaster does make it look astonishing for a near 50-year-old film. I wonder what Lawrence of Arabia would look like under similar treatment; now THERE's a film...

Well, it's certainly as boring as Ben Hur.

Apart from the chariot race, which I admit is exceptionally well done, and to a lesser extent the sea battle, what else is it other than a load of pious drivel?

Contemplating getting the new Blu Ray release. Looks spectacular and the making of-material sounds fantastic.

Might also get Fall of the Roman Empire if I see it cheaply.
