Plus Wilshere is back soon - somehow despite all the players you've lost over the years Wenger is on the verge of constructing yet another great Arsenal midfield. That said buying players like Arteta did require a kick up his arse.

And Frimpong's apparently playing tonight, woo. Hopefully we'll see a few of the youngsters tonight, Eisfeld (it feels like only yesterday that Arsene trolled us all with his signing), Bellerin and Gnabry look pretty handy going by the U21 matches. also, no Chamakh pls.

as soon as I mention it, the squad for tonight's match:

11 Andre Santos
12 Olivier Giroud
14 Theo Walcott
15 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
18 Sebastien Squillaci
20 Johan Djourou
22 Francis Coquelin
23 Andrey Arshavin
26 Emmanuel Frimpong
29 Marouane Chamakh
36 Damian Martinez
38 Martin Angha
40 Hector Bellerin
46 Thomas Eisfeld
47 Serge Gnabry
54 Ignasi Miquel
60 James Shea
64 Nico Yennaris

I have a feeling we might see Theo starting up front. I'd rather see Giroud since a goal would do a lot for his confidence (Coventry haven't won a game in their last fourteen, which is encouraging) but it realistically is the best opportunity AW will get to play Walcott in that position to see if he deserves it. Other than that I've really liked what I've seen of Yennaris whenever he's come in, and he can play at RB or central midfield so he'll most likely be starting. and Arshavin maybe? (he looked good at the Euros.)

Great goal by The Ox.

Great to see a player who isn't afraid to take a shot from outside the box.

So I've watched the match now (no stream in the year 2012, what a joke). Now is a good time for me to take back every mean thing I've ever said about Miquel, he's been great for the U21s and was probably our best player last night. I won't be calling for him to start in the first team every week but as a fourth choice CB behind Kos/Verm/Mert, I prefer him to Djourou (and his development so far this season suggests that he is actually a good long-term prospect).

Also: Theo fluffed an awful lot of chances but two great goals, I think the Chelsea game is too risky to experiment with him in the central position but he always plays well against them. I'd be inclined to go with a front three of Poldi-Gerv-Theo, though Giroud might give players like Luiz more of a headache than Gervinho. Even then, this means leaving Ramsey and Ox on the bench (loving all this in-form squad depth at the moment). Arshavin had a good game as well, if he could do that against higher level opposition then it'll be good to have someone to come in for Cazorla occasionally along with a fit Rosicky. Gnabry also looks like a serious talent (apparently Wenger expects him in the first team this season, which wouldn't surprise me).

finally, GIROUD GIROUD GIROUD GIROUD GIROUD

I actually thought you'd beat Chelsea but they managed to keep Cazorla and Arteta really quiet - I thought there'd be a lot more space for them. I know the defender will get criticized for the Torres goal but he was all over the Spaniard and he managed to somehow get a toe on that volley for a very good finish. It's a bit of a setback because beating the big teams is the real barometer

I concur. It'll be interesting to see how Arsenal comeback from this disappointing loss. I too was surprised by this result, especially going on the Gunner's recent performance at home, I thought there would be a bloodbath! Still, Chelsea played great and Petr Cech deserves huge kudos for the win. Its still early days but Chelsea are in a good position right now.

Now all United need to do is beat Spurs to keep on their heels!

I only got to see some of the match - pretty depressed at the softness of the goals (and the fact that it's Chelsea, obviously). Playing Kos in place of Mertesacker was a huge mistake - even with his excellent current form, Mert gives more balance to the centre-back pairing (Verm and Kos are just too similar for me). He also obviously offers a lot more positionally and at set pieces, which is where we were screwed over today. Gervinho is just irritating, I'd rather see Giroud given more time to gel with the team than see Gerv trying and failing to dribble through defences endlessly all game.

Oh well, hopefully we can start again next weekend and get back to how we were playing the last few weeks. One defeat is hardly the end of the world (unless the team react really badly and go on a horrible run of form, which is always plausible).

Is there already another international break coming soon? I ask because The Jenks is at the centre of a battle between the FA and the Finland football association over what country he'll be playing for at international level. Crazy to think that he was playing for sixth-tier Eastbourne Borough two years ago (and that he's played more games for Arsenal than he did for Charlton). Though I think he'd be better off with Finland, since the queue in front of him for England (Johnson, Richards, Walker, Kelly etc) will reduce his chances of playing. And I suppose the odds of winning something with Finland are as high as the odds of winning anything with England.

Meanwhile, Gazidis gets a nice pay rise (http://hereisthecity.com/2012/10/03/arsenal-fans-react-on-twitter-to-ivan-gazidis-whopping-2-million/). Loving that frugal financial policy Ivan.

welp, the Steve Bould effect was fun while it lasted. Comically bad defending throughout the entire half.

Sexy finish. Giroud did well too, his time will come. I'm sick of hearing all this Chamakh 2.0 talk about him.
