maybe he'll come off the bench and score a hat trick, right? RIGHT

Against this defense, it's a certainty!

45 minutes later Arsenal 4-5 Southampton

If they can equal my FM record of 8 goals conceded I'll be mildly impressed.

What a soft goal to give away.

But other than that we are thumping the saints. Robin who?

We've been terrible in the second half. In before 4-4

I'm glad the media didn't over-react when Arsenal didn't score for a whole two games otherwise they'd be looking mighty foolish now.

Great win (even though we were awful for about twenty minutes after the second half). BUT why didn't Theo pass to Giroud for a handy tap-in just before the sixth goal, he ruined the prophecy.

Seemingly the goalkeeper dilemma has solved itself for Arsene - Ches apparently picked up an ankle injury before the Soton game and hasn't travelled to Montpellier for tomorrow's match. His comments after Saturday's game are the first time I've ever seen him so critical of a player who's made a mistake, and he's said already that he thinks the gap has closed between Ches and Mannone - will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks.

in other news - Diaby is fit to play and Wilshere is allegedly back in training this week. and Henry is still god: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjH1KhGVhKg

He's understandably pissed the club's chance at a 100% clean sheet season was ruined.

Yeah without that fuck up it would have made it 4 clean sheets in a row - the one good thing for Arsenal so far is their GD is going to kick arse!

Aye, at this stage last season we had a GD of -8 (and that was before we lost 4-3 to Blackburn). As long as we don't lose 16-0 to Citeh next weekend it'll be an improvement on last year.

I'm actually kind of (well, relatively) optimistic about that match actually - their defence hasn't looked as unbreakable as it did at its best last season, and Mancini will surely have to field the first team against Real whilst we can rotate against Montpellier. An extra few days rest for some key players could make the difference next weekend. I don't really expect us to get anything from it but we might not get a better shot at them away from home this season.

I'd like to apologise unreservedly to Arsenal fans for that. It's obviously my fault as I transferred Mertesacker into my work Fantasy Football team on Friday.

Is this start of Gervinho's Henry like reinvention into an unstoppable goal-machine?

The strangest thing about our matches against City the last few years is that we always seem to outplay them (even if they win), despite the fact that we always look like the team about to get a hiding based on form. Now that we're actually the form team in this fixture for once, my world has been thrown out of balance.

Still excited to see how we do though, one match can't really decide a season but a good performance (or even better, a good result) could show that we mean business this season for once. If we can go today, the Chelsea match and Schalke without conceding more than a goal a game, then Steve Bould is a genius.

Sounds like Arsenal had the better things. But why oh why Arsene did you wait so long to take off an anonymous Podolski.

If things aren't going well at 60 minutes unleash The Ox and Wall-E.

Podolski may have been anonymous, but Gervinho was distractingly bad today. I would have kept the former on if any changes are being made in that area.

Other than that, an away draw against the champions is absolutely fantastic - kind of disappointed that we didn't win (what with being the best team for the entire first half/the last twenty minutes) but I would have taken this result beforehand. Mertesacker was my MotM, completely negated Aguero for most of the game (all dem interceptions).

Yeah, Gervinho was last-season bad today. Which given Arsenal's dominance for much of the game is impressive.

I'm still holding out hope that this week was the exception rather than last week, and that he is actually good now. Will be interesting to see what Arsene does for the Chelsea game, maybe Giroud would be more effective against their centre-halves?

Also loving how Sagna has no chance of getting back into the first team with glorious Jenks playing like he is at the moment. And the fact that we're able to rotate CBs with all three being equally capable of coming in. And JACKS BACK so we'll soon be able to rotate in the centre of midfield as well (fantasises about Arteta/Jack/Santi linking up)

This is one of the tougher looking Arsenal teams of recent years - at the end of the City match you were looking favs to win it and Gervinho had a gilt edged chance to finish it.

There is a real resilience about this current team (something we saw in patches last season, but unfortunately too often accompanied by players switching off and reacting badly to pressure). the most impressive thing is how they've shown that resilience both when ahead *and* behind - today and the Liverpool games were both impressive for different reasons, which is encouraging. I think it's too soon to really judge how capable we are of mounting a proper challenge this season, but with the defence as they are at the moment, probably the single most gifted player I've seen play for us since Fabregas (Cazorla) and an attacking shape that's not so dependent on one man, it's the best we've looked for some time. A win against Chelsea is essential though, and even more focus from the defence - out of the three goals we've conceded so far, two were goalkeeping errors and one was a penalty. If we can cut out the individual mistakes then we'll look even better.

also, awwww

I'll never be convinced that Gervinho is good enough for Arsenal, or has the quality to play for any top side, just too inconsistent and some his control of the ball is dismal. However, positive enough start to the season, Cazorla has started well as has Posolski. Arteta has been our most effective player so far this season. Interesting that Wenger has Ben talking about the gap between Mannone and Szczesny is closing, could be a case of building his confidence but having a strong back up can only be a good thing.
