I don't think that is the cause and effect, but I'd be very surprised if RvP were still at Arsenal come September 1st. He only has one year left on his contract, Arsenal can not / will not compete with a number of other clubs on salary, so he will leave. And better to get a few quid for him this year than nothing next.

Wenger has hardly set the world alight with his forward buys recently. Chamakh, Bendtner and Park all need clearing out. Gervinho might come good, but he looks to panic when he gets the ball, which is not a good sign.

So there is room at Arsenal for forwards. I'm slightly surprised by the two buys (Podolski and Giroud). I see them more as George Graham Arsenal players who can hang around in the box waiting for the ball to be crossed over, than fluent Wenger players. Podolski in particular I think needs the team built around him and his strengths if he is to perform.

As I said earlier in this thread, I would be happy to replace one forty-goal-a-season striker with two twenty-goal-a-season strikers if it means that we're less creatively dependent on RVP. Obviously the preferred situation is all three playing at Arsenal next season, but that's not particularly likely. I also think Giroud is a better buy than Chamakh, Gervinho or Park - he is a big guy like you suggest, but he's also got ability with the ball at his feet and contributes much more to general play than Chamakh ever did. I'm reserving judgement for the time being, but I'm kind of looking forward to seeing how he does for us.

Plus, he's nearly as handsome as Arteta. swoon.

Having not seen him play I've got to say I continue to be underwhelmed at the close season at Arsenal so far.

Also, it's nice to see that the post-Euros 'stick something to do with Arsenal in a transfer story = hits' portion of the off-season didn't take long to get going. So far (caution- potentially hazardous levels of tabloid nonsense):

It's all downhill for RVP now.

Won't be surprised if Arsenal sell him for £25 million and then he spends most of next season injured.

At least he gave the club a sensational last season and wasn't a disturbance, unlike Judas.

Fabregas contributed much more to Arsenal than RVP ever did, to be honest.

I understand his unhappiness at the club's lack of ambition, but to leave as soon as he can after seven years of injuries and one great season is kind of depressing. It's embarrassing to see him claim to have the utmost respect for a genuine servant to the club like Arsene Wenger, while simultaneously skirting around the obvious reasons for why he wants out at this curiously convenient moment in his career. Hopefully he'll go to Juventus, but after a letter like the one above, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if City is where he's headed

I didn't say he didn't.

But van Persie conducted himself properly during his final season. He played out of his skin and played the best football of his career and was an inspiration to his teammates rather than a distraction.

Judas was poor during his final season and was more interested with having a laugh and joke with the Barcelona players than trying to win a game for Arsenal. His conduct was unforgivable.

The wage structure wasn't going to be an issue in this instance - between £130-140k p/w were the touted numbers he was being offered. Going much further beyond that is fine if you're a Russian oil baron but is pretty much out of the question for the majority of teams (especially when you're running a break-even model based on CL qualification, like Arsenal apparently are). Since none of our owners seem interested in actually investing in the club, we're kind of stuck really.

I don't think van Persie knew this was his last season at Arsenal until about February tbh, at which point his form began to drop. He also immediately looked for the exit after one season playing the best football of his career, having been happy to stay while the club kept him despite a horrific injury record. On the other hand, Fabregas played great football for Arsenal despite years of speculation (although yes, he was mediocre in his final season) and took a pay cut to join Barcelona.

Think he wants to actually win a trophy is most likely the reason for going. He seen other leave and go on and win stuff and at 29 he ain't going to get too many more chances. 3rd or 4th each year ain't good enough for him. Most players want medals.

As I said earlier in the thread, I doubt he's even looking for more money, he just wants out. Ah, let him go. The sooner the better so they have time to sort things out.

Everyone says every year that they'll struggle to qualify but they always manage it. If you mean struggle in it, well yeah that's a given.

Yeah, we sold two of our three best players/lost the other one to injury all last year and still finished higher than the previous season. I don't foresee finishing third again (unless RDM is a flop, then third is surely Chelsea's to lose with the signings they've made), but we'll give fourth a good go like we always do. /relentlesslypositive

(Although on this matter - the most annoying thing about the articles on RVP in the last day or so is the constant assertion that Arsenal fans celebrate a top-four place like a trophy and how it's indicative of the club's lack of ambition. Surely it's possible to acknowledge the achievement that finishing third is, while still wanting the team to challenge for trophies?)

I think losing Van Persie will have a major impact unless Giroud adjusts to the PL very quickly and starts banging in the goals

One upside to this is that we can put to bed the 'is Arsene being cheap by his own choice or is he being forced' debate. I'm not convinced of Usmanov's intentions tbh, but at the very least he seems to care about the club more than Stan or Gazidis. (of course it's all relative innit, they're all horrible people that I've rather have nowhere near the club.)

Of course, even more likely is that he's just timed a crowd-pleasing open letter to strengthen public opinion towards him and against the current board, which just makes him an opportunistic twat. This season is going to be tough enough, even without a boardroom battle - doing this isn't helping at the moment.

Unfortunately what these players fail to grasp is there's only a limited amount of medals going around.

Perhaps all these players who want trophies should join Celtic now they're guaranteed at least one evey season.
