 I've got Sky+ at the moment but I think the box is nearly on its last legs. It can't read my new viewing card and when I put the old one back in it could not read that and I had to reboot the machine twice before it view the old card again. Sky told me to try again tonight with the new card but other things have been playing up on it.
I might upgrade to HD

Me too... I've still got the checkout page up ready, just trying to make my mind up.
Because I made a fuss they've waived the £30 installation fee... so I'll only have to pay the £49 for the box.

 Are you a new customer to sky or do you already have Sky/Sky+ Sinatra? If your a new customer I'd advise going through quidco as you get £120 cashback for the HD package, that will pay a years worth of your HD subscription. I ordered a couple of months back as a new Sky customer and installation took 2 weeks, I hear it can be anything from 3-5months wait if your already a Sky customer.

I would definetley recommend Sky HD though, the picture quality is amazing and the choice of programmes/channels is second to none. Football looks great in HD on my 46" TV. I got a Samsung box and haven't had a problem with it so it might be a bit hit and miss as far as reliability is concerned, just waiting for the new EPG and my TV life will be complete

I'm an existing customer (since 1994) and I've got everything with them, Sky Talk, Broadband, Line Rental, even a bloody Credit Card!! My HD box is ready as I registered (on their suggestion) 3 months ago...... Because my account is so impressive they've waived the £30 that existing customers have to pay for installation....
oh bugger it, I'm gonna go for it.... ooww,,, one more thing. Are the menus different or the same as Sky+. ?

 Ah, Quidco isn't an option then I'm afraid. The menu is the same with the addition of 'HD Channels' in the category list, although they are rolling out a totally new EPG (Menu system) this year. They are rolling it out in batches according to which box you have/get. I think the Thompson boxes and some Pace boxes already have it, I'm still waiting with my Samsung box. With the new EPG it makes the planner much more organised and other little extras like a mini TV in the corner so you don't miss anything when you enter the EPG. You can also tune in ITV HD, which is good for when the football is on as I can't stand watching football on non-HD channels now, you can only do that with the new EPG though.

If you have the movie package the difference is instantly noticable between HD and non-HD movie channels, it'll blow you away. Sky Anytime offers TV then and there and is always useful if you miss something like a movie premier as it's normally listed in there for that week. You can also remote record things from your PC/Mobile so if you forget to set something to record and you go out you can do it via your mobile (I haven't used this much, but it's always handy to have)

 Probably not, infact definetly not. It'll just appear one day, although you do get a package through the post telling you when you will get it (although these seem to be arriving after the event) and all the info on it. I'd say theres a good chance you'll receive a Samsung box as when I was talking to the installer that's all he had on his van and he told me Sky are trying to use more of these as there seems to be less faults with them as opposed to the Pace boxes, it's luck of the draw. If you're lucky he might have a few other than Samsungs, just ask him what boxes he's got and he'll tell you what, you might get a choice.

Another little tip, make sure it's a proper cardboard box with the picture on and everything and not a plain white box as these are normally refurbished units some engineers try and get rid of on the unsuspecting customer. From what I've heard it's normally the contracted engineers that try this as opposed to a genuine sky employee. Probably wont happen but just incase I thought I'd give you the heads up. Don't want you getting a second hand product now....

I'd have thought that would be automatic when you upgrade... i can wait though.!

Oh cool!
Just ordered it...! being installed Saturday 20th between 8am - 1pm !!!
Interstingly, if I feel after 12 months I'm not using the HD channels much, I can cancel the subscription and still be left with a nice new box with 80 hours memory and the use of the free HD channels.
They also gave me the first 6 months free (£10 credit on to my account each month) and free installation. So just an initial outlay of £49, which I'm more than happy with to be honest.

 I phone up Sky about HD this morning as he told me it be a 10 week wait!!!. So I told him to forget about it.

They just fucked up my Sky+ box got the new card and the box now no longer works. Thankfully we got extended warranty on it so got someone coming out to look at it on Friday.

to be fair they said 3 mon ths to me and it took 8 weeks.
You register and then they send you email updates, you dont even have to pay anything until it's ready. and even then you can just ignore the email

In a word - awesome. I feel like a kid again. I can't stop watching TV. I keep flicking between the digital and HD versions of the same channel!  The difference in the sport alone is astonishing, it's like you're at the bloody game.

 I know what you mean, I've been watching Wimbledon this week and hate tennis, alas the quality is amazing.

In related Sky news, I had a FOURTH visit from a technician yesterday, in the space of about 6 weeks. It turns out that one of the inputs from the satellite was connected improperly, and so recordings werent working. Despite this being an issue stemming from the original install Sky refuse to even part refund our first six weeks worth of billing. Its a bit of a joke really, seeing as it was Sky's fault that it wasnt installed correctly from the off.

There are different types of breach. To cancel a contract it has to be what is called a repudiatory breach. That is a breach which is so serious a party is entitled to treat the contract as cancelled. It must go to some fundamental aspect of the contract. Your situation is unlikely to be treated as a repudiatory breach.

Under the terms of the Sale of Goods Act any service provided must be of sufficient quality. If it isn't the provider has to remedy the situation within a reasonable time. It seems at least from a legal perspective Sky has done this by sending out 4 engineers in 6 weeks.

As you have a minimum agreed term to your contract it's likely if you cancel early you will be in breach. There may be set penalties in the contract for early cancellation, I don't know without reading the fine print.

It does seem odd they won't give you some form of ex gratia payment to compensate you for your loss. Companies usually do something to keep their relationships with customers sweet. As you said it may be Sky is in such a dominant position it feels it doesn't need to.
