Any way you look at this it's bad news and competely wrong. McG. American. Spaced. Those three things should've never been discussed together.

Supernatural is cringe worthily bad.

Will Pegg and Wright have any involvement in it? like Gervais with the US Office? that will make a big difference in my books!

(Wobbly top lip indeed!) I can think of no other way to express my dismay but stand here dumbstruck with my top lip a-wobblin' - OI! America! Leave our Spaced alone!

The States have proven that they can do twisted weird and wacky any number of times (most recently with Flight of the Conchords which they've kept incredibly close to the tone of the original stage and radio shows). As long as they're given a decent team and not forced to make it into a mainstream popcorn fest then there's no reason why it can't have its own charm - it just won't be as charming or geek-referential or all-out mad as ten balloons as the original, obvs.

It's all in the cast, if it's good then this can easily be good to. Forget McG he's just pumping in the cash if theres a good cast it'll be fine. Plus Will and Grace may not be a masterworking of TV but the people who script it are certainly not the worst writers out there! It at the moment seems like a weird idea above all else, need to know more about it before I could class it as bad.

...will Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson be involved, and in what capacity?...

...I agree that they should get whoever directs Flight of the Conchords on board. (Just got the DVD yesterday - extremely funny and original quirky comedy!) Its got a look as close as an american show is going to get to Spaced!...

Plus american geeks are waaay weirder than ours (probably stereotyping here) so it might turn out to be some guy in an apartment dressed as a hobbit the whole time. Mind you I just saw a show on British LARP...weird!...

...fetch me my rifle.

Really though, I hate this. Bet ya that it's in a rather nice apartment, and not the grotty flat we're used to. Plus Mike n Brian will be just based on stereotype. If anything like those characters are in this!

as an old Harry Enfield character would've said... er.. .shouted... "OI! McG! NOOOO!"

and i was against a Americanised The Office because I hated our one, largely due to the annoyingness of Brent (due larely to the annoyingness and smug-gitness of Gervais). And if any nation can be even more irritating, it's the Americans.

oh. and also, America's idea of comedy is to put canned laughter after every other line of dialogue. sometimes even more often. Seriously... aprt from occasionally Friends and The Simpsons, when has American TV ever been intentionally amusing? and as you say... it'll have a huge vat of polish and wax poured over it. though you forgot that they will then marinade it for several hours in the worst kind of cheese known to mankind.

Plus, I hardly think America is ready for Spaced... they largely still aren't past Monty Python in comedy years (I swear they think they're still going)

The fact is the initial impression is a bad one.

Sure, there was witty dialogue in Will & Grace but it's still Americanised. I can't imagine a non-glossy feel to a US version of Spaced. The entire POINT of Spaced was that gritty and occasionally cringing moments which British satire's known for.

And the constant pop references which would be very hit and miss with an Americanised version (like many of Family Guy's jokes).....to us anyway.

Oh and Edgar Wright has chimed in via his MySpace page and I don't think it bodes very well:

The interesting part of that is, no-one has been in touch with me at all. Haven't deigned to get in contact. So my involvement is indeed very unclear.

At least The Office had the support of Gervais and Merchant.

Whils there's no reason why this SHOULDN'T work, in THEORY, I think it's a bad idea. Spaced is very British - it's not just about two flatmates and their weird mates; that's basically Will & Grace. The closest US equivelant to Spaced has already been made: it's the likes of Clerks and Mallrats, early Kevin Smith (Star Wars, comics, sex, foul language, buddy humour, homoeroticism... it's all there!). So whilst I'm willing to accept that it might be good I just don't see the point; take the Spaced kids out of the 90s, out of London, and it's no longer Spaced and therefore, well, bollocks.

Yes US version of The Office wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to turn out and there's been a lot of top quality homegrown comedy from the states recently but, for the love of Jeebus, LEAVE SPACED ALONE! The fucking tv execs will take out everything that made it funny (grotty flat, drug taking, drinking wierd looking central characters) and replace them with the same old sanitised shit you see in all their other sitcoms. Its time we in Blighty struck back! Lets remake Friends except in our version Ross & Rachel get pissed up on the first date and have a drunken shag on the floor of the flat thus saving us 11 years of fucking tedium.

GET SOME FUCKING IMAGINATION!
Spaced has been done to perfection, there is no need to ruin something pitch perfect by shitting on it with a gang of good looking folks one who is stupid, one who is kooky, two neurotic and a couple there who are kind of funny.
And if there be a three camera style and audience watching it to teach people where to laugh thou shalt be severely destroyed soon!

Spaced is one of the greatest British TV shows ever and nothing can change that now. I saw a little bit of the US version of The Office, thought to myself 'OK this is shit', and never watched another second.
If that twat McG wants to waste his time and someone elses dollars converting Spaced for the Yanks, let him. I'm not going to sully my eyeballs with the inevitable 'joke' of a result and as the majority of the US audience are sure to miss the point, it will no doubt be cancelled as soon as it airs anyway. If we all just ignore it, it won't effect us. We've got the good version. The original version.
