So then. It has recently come to my attention that I am a lazy bastard. For a while now, I have been recording films off of the television but have yet to watch many of them. Some of these are from recent months, whilst a few are from last year. This here thread shall be a (hopefully) sacred place where I can comment on my quest to hopefully get through all of these films for the first time. So here they are:

Links to relevant reviews can be found within the film titles highlighted in red:

My habit has become so bad that I'm not entirely sure if I've taped The Graduate, Some Like It Hot and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. If I manage to find these (and others) I will add them to the list.

The purpose of this thread?
I felt that some of you lot would like to see someone fail at a momentous task. I will hopefully not do that, thus annoying you lot.

Enjoy. The first review will hopefully be up soon.

By the way, I have no fucking clue how I'm going to survive Christmas TV.

I will hopefully be able to continue it soon. Unfortunately, our downstairs VCR broke and I am unable to view anything on the TV in my room as the room is being redecorated at the moment and I have obviously been kicked out of it. Patience though. I will try to watch something this weekend.

Its weird, man. I very much enjoyed Tim Burton's Ed Wood. The recreation of scenes from this film were particularly amusing so I went into this expecting an enjoyably bad film. But I didn't get that. I didn't find the terrible nature of the film to be an asset. I found the film to be very boring and painful to watch. Truly one of the worst films of all time. Possibly the worst I've ever seen.

I really need to watch this film. I've seen bits here and there and it looks hilariously awful. I'll probably love it

Bump. The next film is likely to be one of the following.

The animation of this eco-tale is brilliant and the original premise is a promising one. Unfortunately though, the plot plays out rather poorly and the pacing is very poor. The film feels far too long and the content really doesn't justify its length. At times, it feels as though Takahata can't decide whether he wants to make a comedy or a drama in the style of his previous work, Grave of the Fireflies. A mostly positive first hour helps the film. The second hour isn't very good at all. This is easily Studio Ghibli's worst film.

Yes, I do realize that it isn't The Fog. The reason I chose Pom Poko was because I ended up watching some of it whilst it was taping yesterday so I thought I might as well finish it today and just get it over with.

This film starts off quite promisingly with a very solid first half hour. Unfortunately, it soon deteriorates into an overblown, dull and just plain uninteresting mess. Depp's performance holds the film together but Del Toro is terrible. A massive misfire from Mr. Gilliam and a surprising one at that. Far too over-praised, especially by some people on these forums.

A lot of people are probably going to attack you for that review but I can see exactly why you didn't like Fear and Loathing. I wouldn't rate it as low as you have done, but I still didn't get what the fuss was about and thought that Johnny Depp's performance was the only really good part of the film.

So, no-one seen Pom Poko then?

There's a plot description over at IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110008/

There's also this very positive review over at DVD Times that inspired me to watch the film:

"What's with all these awards? They're always giving out awards. Best Fascist Dictator: Adolf Hitler."

Though not quite reaching the heights of Allen's later film, Manhattan, Annie Hall still proves to be a funny and moving film with a fine performances from Allen himself and one of the best performances in any film ever from Diane Keaton. The shifts in time work well and I loved the fact that we never truly find out whether some of the situations in the flashbacks to Alvy's childhood actually happened at all. I felt that it sort of lost its way towards the end, though I was tired, so I will hopefully rewatch it in the near future.

Right then, I decided to re-evaluate my scores for the films reviewed so far due to my change in rating system. Some of these changes in judgement are due to simply thinking through the film again and realising that I gave it either too high or too low a rating.

Here's the ratings so far. These are all out of 4.

1.) Dial M for Murder  [1954]   -   ***
2.) Buffalo Soldiers  [2001]   -   **.5
3.) The Apartment  [1960]   -   ***.5
4.) American History X  [1998]   -   ***

So what's next? I'm thinking of watching one of the following:

The Fog  [1980]
Infernal Affairs  [2002]
12 Angry Men  [1957]
Some Like It Hot  [1959]
Laputa: Castle in the Sky  [1986]
Oldboy  [2003]

I'm also thinking of changing the title of the thread. Any suggestions?

"It's very hard to keep personal prejudice out of a thing like this. And no matter where you run into it, prejudice obscures the truth. Well, I don't think any real damage has been done here. Because I don't really know what the truth is. No one ever will, I suppose."

It's not hard to see why this film gets so much acclaim on these forums. One of the best ensemble pieces of all time. Absolutely gripping from the beginning until the end. Its amazing how much tension Lumet manages to supply considering the type of film that this is. None of the performances are bad, with Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb being particular standouts. Its also wonderfully filmed. The whole thing just comes together perfectly. This definitely deserves its classic status.

Please watch Oldboy or Infernal Affairs next, Oldboy is my favourite Asian film and Infernal Affairs is also very good.

It's good to see you liked 12 Angry Men as well.

Some Like It Hot is up next, but one of those two that you mentioned should be viewed this week.

One of the funniest films of all time. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis make for one of the best on-screen duos ever. This and The Apartment have made Jack Lemmon one of my favourite actors. Marilyn Monroe's ditzy blonde is also wonderful, as is Wilder's direction. A fantastic script, and the last scene is just killer.

"The celebration tonight is a travesty. You're honoring murderers."

One of the best horror films of the 1980s. Carpenter manages to create a superbly haunting atmosphere with a great score and some memorable images. The plot's intriguing enough and there are no notably bad performances. The fog effects still stand up pretty well today. Those expecting to be scared by the film may be a tad disappointed however, as the film lacks in any decent frights despite the great atmosphere that Carpenter manages to create. It's still a very solid horror film and one of the best films that I've seen so far during this little endeavor of mine.
