Just scanning Sir Ridley's bio to see if there's any reason why he wouldn't want to do a Jack Aubrey film...

I love this one too, favourite scene is certainly 'the lesser of two weevils' Crowe is excellent in it.

One of the best films of the past 20 years... never mind the past 10 years.  If you like the films - read the books!  Reverse Of The Medal and it's follow up are a couple of great entries in the series, and it would be good to see that Aubrey is all-at-sea when on dry land (excuse the pun) and to see that Maturin involved in his espionage work.

And please, please, please let's have a sequel as good as the original!

I'm studying the sea fiction of James Fenimore Cooper for my masters, and this movie is the closest thing that captures the realism of being on a ship at this point in history.  A lot of people I know really don't seem to like this movie for some strange reason.  Judging what I know about sea fiction and its alienating effects upon readers its clear that the maritime world just doesn't sit well with people.

And great news that we have a follow up script.  I just hope Crowe and Bettany will be back.  They've got to capture that elusive French bastard...

I think they're recasting the main parts. It's going to be Nathan Fillion and and Johnny Depp.

The book they are apparently adapting is largely set on land (in London), has a court-room drama sequence, no significant naval battles and plenty of espionage for Dr Maturin to get his teeth into.  The next in the series would make a great third installment though.

I'm guessing the proposed sequel is still on the backburner? For shame.

I have the books there, still to get started on them - shame on me I know, but I'm going through A Song Of Ice And Fire just now and will be a while on those.

Fantastic movie. A real grown up boys own adventure. Such a shame that Crowe/Weir didn't go on to make more.

I've just tweeted Crowe to see what the latest is on that sequel. I'm betting he has no idea.

I'd love to see a sequel directed by Peter Weir - any more news on this?

I'm watching this right now, always a joy to rewatch this.

I can't believe we're coming up to this film's 10th birthday, where has the time gone??

I'm watching this again. Apologies for lowering the tone but I've just noticed that, during the scene where they're sailing through wintry weather, one shipmate has taken that time to sit on the edge and, um, drop anchor

Seriously, I thought we'd have the obligatory trilogy at least by now. If ever a sequel was deserved etc. etc...

Marvellous stuff, Crowe and Bettany spark together, it's one that I should put in that "Films I watch over and over" thread. I really can't fault M&C as it's so damn comforting, for want of a better word.

Yeh, spotted the dumper on 2nd watch.

Been meaning to revisit this myself but things haven't panned out. The Fantasia suite is a beautiful piece of music.
