Just saw Hatchet a few days ago, I became interested in it after hearing that it was a smash-hit at various film-festivals. The film was marketed as "old-school American Horror", which it very much is. An homage of sorts to the slasher movies of the late 70s and 80s, no holds barred. The tagline of the film, "It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. And it's not based on a Japanese one.", is fairly clunky, but amusing and entertaining, which in turn reflects the actual film pretty well. The plot of Hatchet is, like many of the classics, really just an excuse to start the heads rolling. It tells the story of a group of friends vacationing in New Orleans, they're partying hard and enjoying what the bayou has to offer. One of the guys in the group is not having fun though, his girlfriend just left him, he can't take his mind of it and enjoy himself. Instead he decides to go on a tour of the swamp at night, where one is supposedly able to see the souls of people who drowned there. He manages to persuade another one of his friends to go with him. They are joined by a married couple, the guide, a mysterious young woman, a sleazy porn-producer and two bimbos. As it turns out though, there is only one evil presence to be afraid of in the swamp, the sinister, deformed Victor Crowley (a menacing Kane Hodder), who supposedly died many years before in a tragic accident involving fire and the titular hatchet, who now seeks revenge on anyone who approaches his old, rundown house. Hatchet is quite entertaining, the amount of blood and gore is astonishing, some of the most explicit murders I've ever seen actually, but it's all kept fairly tongue-in-cheek, and as such it's more fun than scary. The film does well to maintain this tone throughout, thanks to fresh direction from the young Adam Green, who also did the script. But, and this a big but, the ending of the film is insultingly, stupifyingly bad. It feels like they just ran out of film and then decided, fuck it, let's just release it like this. Otherwise Hatchet is very entertaining, definitely a must for non-squemish horror-fans who like a healthy sense of humor too.
