Raging Bull Sequel - 14/9/2007 1:33:32 PM

While reading the times' interview with Jake La Motta I came across this quote.

quote:

La Motta is a man in denial; an ageing thug seeking to escape from his crimes despite cashing in on them, not only through his 1970 autobiography but in a recent deal that could lead to the cinematic release of Raging Bull II.

Can Helen or any of the other Empire writers shed any light on this comment?

Here's the full artice if anyone is interested.

They'd be better of renaming it something else rather than try and attach itself to the original movie. LaMotta has enough left to justify another film, but promoting it as a sequal (which would be taken no other way IMO) would be a bad idea.

Though it's a spinoff of one of his signature roles, it's probably a safe bet that no amount of Hollywood makeup wizardry could prepare Robert De Niro for Raging Bull 2. The film, which has no actors or director attached, is based on a 1986 book called Raging Bull II: Continuing the Story of Jake LaMotta, but don't let the title fool you; the tale covers the real-life boxer's earlier years. A new production company, Sunset Pictures, reportedly has the prequel in the planning stages.

I don't like the idea of this one bit. Raging Bull was DeNiro's baby and Scorsese's masterpiece. Its all fine and dandy if they make a sequel but without the original cast and director they are treading on thin ice. Why are Hollywood studios intent on fucking with the past. The only good that can come out of this is to bring Raging Bull back into the spotlight so that people who haven't seen the original can then bask in its glory.

This could be even WORSE than Carlito's Way 2.

The man's not dead yet, though, he has done other things since 1980. They can justify another film about him set after Raging Bull and directed by and starring someone else. I don't see it fucking with the past unless they actually do call it Raging Bull 2.

A different title altogether would be better.

Doc Brown- If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit.

The book is actually based on La Motta's earlier life though.

But if he says it is ok for a second film to be made based on his later life isn't that acceptable? He doesn't have to write a book for a second film to be made.

Before I get ganged up on, I am not saying a 'Raging Bull 2' is a good idea, I don't but since the first film was based on his earlier life why can't there be on set aftee that? Involving his film appearances, his sons death etc.

Absolutely, that exact thought came into mind when i saw the title of this thread. I think it would be awful if they connected it to the great masterpiece that is Raging Bull, the only good thing to come of it as people have mentioned would be to show the viewers of the film the light and draw more people into the fan base of the Scorsese film. But if they call it something else then it will hopefully just disappear after a short time in the lime light and will forever be lost to the glittering golden hall of the greatest cinema flops of all time. Then again, the so-called sequel to Carlitto's Way was soon forgotten, i did not hear about it until i saw it advertised in my local dvd rental store. My initial thought was "damn i bet that will be guff". It was also a straight to dvd as well wasn't it? So maybe we can take that as a reliable sign that that will also be the outcome of this 'sequel' providing that it will be made of course.

No, you're not getting me. There is already a 1986 book called Raging Bull II which is about La Motta's early life. That is what the film would be about.

Ah, right, that would be a prequel then. People were moaning about a sequel which threw me off a bit.
