Waterstones had a buy one get another half price deal going on so I thought I'd take advantage of it. Wasn't really much of an advantage to be had though as the total price was still more expensive than if I would have bought them separately online

A strange mixture perhaps! I last read Wolf Hall and have nearly finished its sequel Bring Up The Bodies. Both are excellent; I am very impressed.

I can't decide whether to start Slaughterhouse Five or Dune next...

 Great books (I've yet to start on the Mantel ones, should probably do so), I recommend Vonnegut next. though I find the cover of this one kind of funny:

 Well spotted Olaf, that is a serious lapse of graphic design! Quite astonishing if that cover made it to print.

The Mantel books are fantastic, she is an exceptional writer. She really brings the Tudor era, and historical characters you'll be familiar with, to life. Both novels are staggering achievements of research, imagination and clean but profound writing style. I understand there is to be a third to complete a trilogy - I can't wait.

I have that too but am yet to give it a crack. I really, really love Bill Bryson's 'Mother Tongue' (a phenomenal read, if you've not tried it) so it's got a lot to live up to.

I read El Narco last year, it's a terrific read, packed with facts and anecdotes, some of which are genuinely scary. I'm sure there are more academic and comprehensive books on this subject, but as an overview of how Mexican cartels came to control the drug trade to the US, I found it informative, accessible and very interesting.

Two epic tomes! I really am going to make an effort to get these read and not take years, and hopefully get back into reading properly. I started The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists 6 weeks ago. I could probably read the whole thing in a little over an hour and I'm only on page 50
