Apparently Millwall will give us Danny N'Guessan and roughly 850,000 for Johnnie Jackson. I'm not sure whether to be incredibly insulted or to laugh really hard, either way the caravan folk know exactly what they can do!

Powelly is being very quiet on the transfer front as he was last summer and no doubt is working hard with his coaching staff to start building the idea of what he wants the team to be next season. He reportedly has been offered a 5 million warchest but I don't listen much to the newspapers or gossip websites so we'll just wait and see what happens, I'd love to see us bring in Jason Puncheon, Adam Clayton and Kevin McDonald if we could though (although that last one would be very tricky....)

Leeds being linked with Arab takeover rumours

I was certain that would be bullshit as usual but...

quote:

The club have issued the following statement...

Further to media reports on Tuesday morning, the club can confirm that talks are taking place regarding investment for the long-term future.

The club has always publicly stated that it would welcome potential investment, but has maintained a belief whereby the quality of the investor is the most important factor in terms of the long-term development of Leeds United.

No further comment will be made at this stage

Interesting times...

Aye, apparently the frontrunners are from Chicago. Let's hope it's the chewing gum bloke, Mr Wrigley

It seems that these new investors at Cardiff are going ahead with the kit change from blue to red...I think the Football League or the FA (no chance) should sit down with these guys and explain traditions in football where colours are so important.

This Malaysian consortium are about to pay off Cardiff's complete debts that have ravaged them for many years, their going to do it in a single, solitary payment of 30 million. They're going to continue to improve the Cardiff City stadium so it may even be able to host international football, and they're going to give Malky Mackay a sizeable war chest this summer to try and improve the squad and get them up to join Swansea in the premiership. They strike me as calm, reasonable and authentic gentlemen, not your standard "foreign owners" these days and I think if you look at how a lot of Cardiff fans, and they are a very passionate and demanding force, have gone full circle on what they think of the changes you see this could actually be quite a good thing!

Red and Dragons are well associated with Wales, they're even keeping the bluebird on the badge and the blue shirt. I say it's a step in the direction of where the club want to go as a bigger, more successful force.

I think you are doing really well to look on the bright side of the deal fella. It brings an icky taste to my mouth, but that is football today commercialism over everything. I don't know how badly off Cardiff are, but they must be desperate. You can see the PR group doing a survey in Malaysia and finding more people said they would buy a shirt with a red dragon on, so feck the fans.

If a rich US businessman said "you know what after this Jubilee, royalty is popular", would you be on for Charlton being rebranded The Royals and running out in a gold lame top, for a tilt at being back in the Premiership?

I appreciate it's easy for me to look at it the way I did given it's not my football club it's happening too but that analogy is a bit far-fetched I think PM, the change is colour-based and that of a nickname, and they are still retaining the Bluebird status too, it's not like the Wimbledon to MK Dons scenario.

I agree about your point about commercialism, forget football, within sport! We know this from cricket, look at the way that's going with greed and player power and political intrusion. If a sport as sacred and seeped in tradition as cricket is going to be effected, football is going to be way ahead of it. I think Cardiff are in significant debt too mate, I think the offer of 30 million is a slightly reduced one too due to it all being upfront, I should imagine there's debt attached to the new stadium as well.

I was only proposing a nickname, shirt colour (band maybe badge change for Charlton too). I'd say in a couple of years Championship games could all be of the ilk The Blades vs The Dragons, it's more exportable.

I read the BBC article and promises look low to me. A take it or leave it debt repayment, at a "fair" level. What if they think 30p in the pound is a good offer, but the owners of the debt don't? And they say they'll look at a ground, but I'd say a few club's fans have heard that.

I just think a lot of clubs are being forced to wake up to what debt means now and football is not a fairy tale the money comes from somewhere and if you are in debt you might not like how you pay the piper.

It already does.

As a Cardiff fan I have mixed emotions about this. Goodfella, you make some excellent points and you are right, a lot of fans have gone full circle with this.

The sad thing is that it has almost literally divided the fans 50/50, for and against. Lots of infighting going on at the moment between those that would rather stay blue whatever the cost and those that would tolerate it if it means big investment. Either way these are very significant days in the club's history

It just seems rather stange "we'll give you the money if you change your shirt". I'm sure there are loads of Malaysians wearing Chelsea, Real Madrid, Spurs or Inter shirts who have no problem with them not being "lucky red" I just don't buy it...there must be something else there. How many official shirts do they expect to sell? Are Malaysians really going to start supporting Cardiff just because their owners are Malaysian?

Exactly. I don't think anyone really believes we are going to suddenly shift a load of shirts just because of the colour change, for starters there are plenty of more successful teams that already wear red! Which does then beg the question "why"?

My guess is that overtime they are hoping to build a brand that Malaysians can relate to and feel a part of (rightly or wrongly) and then, overtime try to make them the number 1 team in Malaysia.
I think it is a long term project. Last year we had "Malaysia" as our sponsor (and again this year), now the kit change. It is a worry as to where it will end.

On the other hand they have already pumped 40m in with talk of another 60m to clear legacy debts, build a new training complex and invest in the team.

What do you do?

I can understand the connotations of red and being Welsh and all that. Plus I can understand why fans are divided because football is a continuing war between tradition and the future. Do they take the money which is better for the long term or do they stick to their traditions which might ultrimately hurt the club?

Anyway it's an idiotic decision. Cardiff are in the English league and are directly competing against English teams around the world for brand awareness. And who are probably the three biggest English clubs around the world - Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal. Who all wear red shirts.

Unless the owners want awareness via association?

No matter what colour they wear, they'll still bottle the playoffs again next season.

Cardiff spend too much money year on year > get themselves in a mess > new owner > spend more money > new owner >

Its just a shame none of this will come home to roost, they've gotten out of it via this faustian pact, selling their soul to secure their future.

The rumour mills this time of the year in the Football League are just completely nuts, and quite irritating. We've been linked with virtually everyone going from Stephen Quinn through to Sam Baldock to even as far as another move for Rivaldo. We should also expect half our squad to leave with BWP linked with pretty much the top half of the championship, Kermit apparently off to Norwich (who didn't even have a manager when that rumour started) and Chris Solly the subject of a 5 million bid from West Ham.

Nice wordplay. Apparently we're going for a Quinn, any ideas on how much he may cost us?

Palarse, I've just seen, are coming down to the mighty Grecians. That one will be pencilled in the diary!!

A Quinn as in Alan, or Stephen?

Stephen won't cost you a lot, we've not offered him a new deal and want him off the wage bill.
You'll have competition though apparently, Ipswich, Blackpool, Leeds are all interested.

As in Stephen.

It seems everyone is interested in everyone at the moment, or everyone who could potentially be on the move this summer anyway. Silly season is well and truly upon us!

Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson's move to Wolves has been put in jeopardy after Lillestrom have insisted he has to play their next 4 games, during which if he gets injured the deal's off. Apparently he's pretty pissed about it, which I can kind of understand I guess.

Well not the most comfortable start in the world....

The first three fixtures for us are Birmingham (a), Leicester (h) and Hull (h), all three teams likely to be gunning for promotion to the top flight next season.

Palace at home 15th Sep, Millwall home New Year's Day, Palace away 2nd Feb (six days before my birthday!!) and Millwall away 16th March have all been pencilled into the diary!!

Bradley Pritchard has signed a new contract with us through to the end of the 2014 season which is excellent news.

He was a real sensation last season, having signed him from Hayes and Yeading just the summer before where during the off-season he had been applying for jobs relating to his degree, now he's a championship football player and he thoroughly deserves it. He's a proper engine room midfielder and he's got a very neat pass, he handled professional football extremely well and seems up to the task of playing at a higher level.

Now that the BBC don't seem to be renewing the deal for Football League highlights/matches, have they been picked up by anyone else?

Mate, I wouldn't bother. If you've got 35 get your website player package (all us Football League clubs seem to have the same thing so I'm assuming the Blades do) where you get online commentary for every game, full highlights packages and news and interviews during the week for the entire season. Sod free-to-air television and it's treatment of the Football League, they've started to show even less interest in that than the cricket. Sky is taking over everything so either get a sky sports subscription or the fore-mentioned.

Speaking of Sky, we've had our home game against Palace moved to the Friday night so it can be on TV. That should be good.

I can't believe the amount of Charlton fans panicking because we haven't signed anybody yet. I have full and utter faith and trust in Chris Powell and it was the same situation last summer and he ended up signing 23 players (two of which were signed in September and proved to be two of our best signings, Yann Kermorgant and Bradley Pritchard) during the transfer window so it's really nothing to hit the panic button over, "apparently" we lost out on both Northampton's Michael Jacobs and West Brom's Keith Andrews, nothing to write home about! He'll improve the squad where he feels he needs to and he'll be cautious in where he spends the money, clubs who throw it about this time of year when the transfer window doesn't even open till July 1 look a little desperate to me, as a lot just seem to be filling holes left by players who were previously on loan at their clubs.

Panicky fans can calm down now, two signings in a day! First off Sunderland striker Jordan Cook in on a free transfer, don't know a lot about him, remember season before last when Walsall played us at the Valley he tested us a few times during a loan spell but I suspect he's one Powelly has in mind for the future and his track record with signings has been very positive so far so I have a lot of faith in the move.

I'm really pleased about Lawrie Wilson joining us from Stevenage, he was excellent last season as was the whole Stevenage midfield and Powelly is making a habit of bringing back former Charlton youth products as he did last season with Haynes and Green. I think we could look at a few other Borough players too, John Bostwick has gone to Posh but there's another couple of players in that squad I wouldn't say no too.

I'm starting to get a bit excited about the new season.
I deliberated renewing my season ticket this year. This is my 30th consecutive year, and for once, just once, I thought to myself I'd rather be playing golf or even watching the Tigers. I never thought I'd say that, but football as a whole is leaving a nasty taste in my mouth.
This will all change 10 minutes into the first game and I'll be back to wearing blue spectacles and shouting myself hoarse.

Looking at the table though, and I knwo this gets said every year, but this really is the toughest season to get into the Premierhsip IMO. 3 good sides have come down, 3 good sides have come up (with the momentum as well - Goodfella - I really think Charlton will be up there) as well as the half dozen sides who just missed out.
In my honest opinion, Leicester won't make the Top 10, I don't think we've got the midfield to compete.
