Some horror movies are excellent, most are awful.

It's a bit of a vague thread to be fair. Anyway, here are my thoughts on the genre rather than specific films within it.

Horror films are like romantic comedies. There'll always be a market for them. They're both essentially 'safe' genres where the general public know exactly what they're getting and and therefore will always put bums on seats.

For example with horror, some people just want to see some blood and guts on screen regardless of decent script/acting/directing etc. For whatever reason, mindless violence entertains people therefore untold amounts of horror films can be produced and almost guaranteed some box office/DVD return. Unfortunately this very factor results in complete over-saturation of the market and subsequent decline in quality.

This works in a similar fashion with rom-coms. The public sometimes just want a safe unassuming film that they know will feature a boy-meets-girl, they clearly are meant to be together, something goes tits-up, they overcome this and end up together scenario. It's almost the predictability factor that sells tickets. And, like horror, the market saturation/decline in quality naturally follows.

Gotta love The Thing though!

Has anyone else seen an horror movies lately which they would like to comment on?
Please do so.

Paap28 really is desperate for this thread to succeed.....God loves a trier....

Why don't you try a different approach to get responses as opposed to such open desperation, such as..........

Slow Zombies are not as good as Fast Zombies.Discuss.(yes I am aware there is a whole thread dedicated to the whole 'I hate people who make a statement followed by 'discuss'')

or horror styles.....when did they jump the shark (or as I prefer, when did the shark explode (for the Jaws:the Revenge fans). In other words, when did torture porn lose its appeal. What was the deathknell for post moderrn horror films. When did the slasher flick become passe.....

just a few ideas....and for the refcord here are the answers...

Fast zombies are way more scary - dawn of the dead remake (in name) is much better/ scarier than the original

Saw was the last good Gorno
Scream 2
Halloween 2...but then again Rob Zombie might bring life back to an old fave.....

I hate clowns, (or "Klowns"), killer or not. Does anyone find them funny? Everyone I've ever known finds them creepy, at best, or toe-curlingly horrifying. That pic will give me nightmares.

I am a very BIG horror fan although I can't think of too many decent films apart from The Grudge, The Descent and the 1st Saw film.
My favourite horrors are: An American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead II and The Thing.
My favourite director is John Carpenter.

I've been a horror fan for as long as I can remember.
Can't say I've seen a genuinely scary film since the original Ringu, too many films recently go for the sick button rather than give you nightmares, although I did have a soft spot for "Cabin Fever" "The Descent" & "Blair Witch Project".

Fave 10 horrors:

The Thing
Rosemary's Baby
Carrie
Don't Look Now
An American Werewolf In London
Evil Dead II
Alien
The Omen (1976)
The Exorcist
Salem's Lot (1979)

Barlow! You gotta love him!

I love my horror films, I read somewhere that 85% of movies made are horrors.
Is this true?
I'm sure it's because most are STV and they are fairly easy and cheap to make.

My Top 11 horrors would be (in no particular order apart from The Thing which is easily my favourite horror movie):-

The Thing
Aliens
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1973)
Alien
Evil Dead 2
Day of the Dead
The Omen
The Shining
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
Ringu

Just so you know, the majority of Shark Attack's fan base is due to John Barrowman's 'Pussy' line rather than anything to do with the shark.

Slasher films nowadays don't flourish as they used to back 10-20 years ago, such classics like Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street can't really be topped in todays horror cinema.

Although they still try (Halloween remake comin soon)!

Actress nowadays play a great factor in the films because if an
actress dies you feel sad and downhearted, beacuse you begin to form a crush. However if a man dies a gruesome death the audience doen't give a toss.

But some women in horror films you just fell like slapping, I mean it happens in literally 2/10 horror movies a woman walks out in the middle of the night (on her own) into some jungle or wherever and 9 times out of 10 falls victim to the baddie.

The Thing is a SHIT film
The first half an hour keeps you hooked, especially that part in the kennel. But after that I just lost intrest.

John Carpenter can do better eg. The Fog and Halloween.

The Thing is a FANTASTIC film.

Just mind-blowing, immense.

The Fog on the other hand, is dire. Bollocks. Trash.
