i hope i'm not the only one constantly distracted by Garfield's insanely long neck. Like freakishly long neck. I can't concenbtrate on anything i've seen him in, due to that neck, it's annoying.

I'm quite excited, loved Marc Webb's debut 500 Days of Summer, Garfield is a solid actor and Emma Stone is 100% more interesting than Dunst.

Well I was a fan of 5DOS, but based on that film, maybe Webb isn't the man to breath life into the Spiderman films. I like Garfield, but while I liked Stone in Easy A I disagree with you on her being better than Dunst, I think for all her flaws KD was the perfect choice to play MJ. Still with this being a reboot, it will be interesting to see what these elements can do with the story.

Gotta disagree man. Mary Jane is supposed to be a fiery person full of life and charm. Kirsten Dunst was just a totally bland actress/character. She never did anything, stuff just happened to her and she always ended up being the damsel in distress come the end of the film. By the 3rd film she just ended up being this whiny bitch, Would've much rather Peter ended up with Bryce Dallas Howards's Gwen Stacey.

I really don't understand the comments that Maguire was too old to play Spiderman anymore. The guy is in his mid thirties, hardly pension age,and the character is called SpiderMAN not Spiderteen after all.

And I agree with DK,Garfields neck looks weird(not as weird as his hair though).

So is this the emo version of Spiderman? And was that a skateboard that Petey had in his hands? Deserves a kicking for that alone!
And re-doing the origin AGAIN irks me. I predict a 3 star flick. Meh

To me Dunst is best when playing that classic, charming girl next door part, fair enough if you think that the writing of the character in the films has been poor, but I don't think it has much to do with with her performance.

Re-wtached Raimi's original last night with commentary and for the first time I realised how badly it's dated in terms of SFX, still think it's a great origin film but the leap in quality between the first in '02 and the second in '04 is huge, be very interesting to see how further along they are with this new one.

Jim i do agree in part, but i actually think some of the CG in Spidey 1 has held up really well. Once he's in his proper suit, the CG spidey is good, the CG Green Goblin works as well. The worst FX are when he makes his own costume. The fabric looks incredibly CG and of course the eyes theyve pasted in to the mask.

I think the problem with Spidey 1 is it has first movie syndrome, where the action isn't nearly as good as the sequels, as they were just developing the tech there and then for it. The action really takes off in part 2, whereas in 1 it's a bit limited.

For the record i think all of Raimi's films are from from perfect. I don't even rate Spidey 2 that highly. I enjoy all 3 for the look, feel and action and that's why i own the blu rays. This reboot still feels like a huge step back. It's really frustrating. I would've been 100% game for a completely recast Spidey with a new creative team, just not a reboot. I literally cannot be arsed with that part of the story AGAIN

The worst thing about Spidey 1 was the Goblins costume. It just looked absolutely ridiculous and about as scary as a power rangers toy.Willem Dafoes campy performance didnt help either.

yes, the costume was TOTAL crap and arguably the worst kind of choice. I thought Deffoe was great. Remember, he's only doing what Raimi asks of him. I guess that's what Raimi wanted.

Indeed, he by the very nature of his nervousness seemed genuine, I think he may just nail Parker to a tee.

Could be a good film.

Still think Avi Arad is a c*nt though.

I really like Andrew Garfield. I think he's a brilliant actor and- from what I've seen- he's really passionate about Spiderman.

Absolutely. I mean, even 6 year old kids know Spidey's origin - no need to waste time retreading the same territory.

Yeah, the thing is though, they (actors) ALL seem 'passionate' about whatever superhero/franchise/remake/sequel/beloved literary character they're set to play in a big-budget film don't they? All of a sudden it's "Oh, I grew up reading the comics. My Dad read the comics too. So did my Neighbour. And her cat did too!"  I don't buy it anymore. Just think it's all part of whatever ridiculous amount of cash they're getting paid. Andrew Garfield may very well say he is a fan of Spidey comics (bulls**t. SNAKE-EYES is a fan of Spidey comics), when in truth he may think comics are for sad losers but it's all about the money, man. He probably can't believe how lucky he is. Minimal effort - CG images and stunt-men will do most of the work and all he has to do is a couple of lovey-dovey scenes and some 'wirework' which he'll 'train for six months with the best stuntmen' (for the EPK) and then just sit back, do a few interviews and watch the royalties from the action figures flood the bank account.

Just what I was thinking.

I'm getting old & cynical.

Did you actually watch that video? He's not that good an actor, and the guy was gushing with love for Spidey, if it was some lame thing cooked up by the suits for him to say, it wouldn't come off as that strong. I've seen previous interviews with him and ones after the comic con appearance and he's listing story arcs which are his favourite and he's talking like a proper fan.
Say you don't think the film will work due to it being the origin story again, but questioning his passion is ridiculous. The guys a fan. Accept it.

I wasn't really bothered about a reboot of the Spidey franchise at all, however, having just recently tried to rewatch the original, I couldn't. It has dated really, really badly. Not just from an effects perspective, but the performances feel a little off too. Dafoe just about escapes criticism as he is clearly aiming for some scene chewing madness. It's more Dunst, Maguire and Aunt May (I have no idea her real name and can't be arsed to look it up.) they feel really fake and appear to be acting in a fucking school play half the time. I really struggled to watch it. I held out as much as I could, but was bored shitless and it wound me up no end.

It's not a 'bad' movie, it's pretty well made but there is something very off and I just wonder of the landlside of superhero films mean those that kickstarted the comic book movie surge again after Batman & Robin killed it (X-Men, Blade, Spiderman) all feel dated because we're having 'the origin' rammed down our throats each and every Summer, but now those Origin movies are being handled with a bit more flash and bang, meaning Raimi's Spiderman bears the brunt?

Anyway, the point being, I'm kinda happy with a re-boot now. I just hope Garfield nails it and the movie doesn't drag itself into some emo/Twilight superhero flick. Which by all accounts from Comic-Con, it doesnt appear to be. I'll give it a go.

Being passionate about a project means crap-all, and can be a negative in some situations (Jackson with King Kong for example) and then there is the list of recent superhero films that flopped with actors who are big fans:

-Green Lantern

-GhostRider

-X-men Wolverine (ok, didnt flop, but was awful)

-Elektra

In all honesty the teaser looks iffy: emo kid, POV looks like a carbon copy of Mirrors Edge, Emma Stone doesnt suit Blonde at all, Rhys Ifans??? and dodgy spidey cgi.

That all said Garfield is a great actor. Thats all I can really say optimistically.

It's a no-brainer though. This is going to make some serious cash. I'm dubious over the notion of it hitting Raimi levels of success but it'll be one of the top 3 films of the summer for sure. The studio's pretty astute to be getting the ball rolling so quickly.
