Ok following on from my why the "hate for Martin Lawerence" thread. I wanted to know why this guy gets some much love.

I mean most of he's films are shit, and he has the same acting style in ever film he's in....

What?

Being John Malkovich, Con Air,  High Fidelity, Say Anything, The Grifters... Are they all shit?

Lets rather say subtle and nuanced. Look at his films again and you will see the range that makes him a credible actor in action, thriller, dramas and comedies.

Anyway, he has that thing which most actors will kill to have -
- THE LIKEABILITY FACTOR.

Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, even Ewan McGregor has it. All they need to do is walk on screen to get your pulse racing.

But you are welcome to your opinion.

He's been in some brilliant films, and yes, he is one of the most likeable people working in the industry today. It just seems impossible not to like the guy.

Not all, but most of he's films are poor. I've only seen three of the five films mentioned above, but even in those you can't really say he stands out (Being John Malkovich, Con Air, High Fidelity)

I disliked Being John Malkovich very much. For some reason, it made me feel sick and I found it a bit dull. The only thing I liked in it was John Malkovich.

What I like is that he's not a scenery chewer or someone always begging for a close-up
He has an intelligent (without being smug air about his characters)
On the whole he picks interesting roles where you have to think or yourself about his characters.

AND

He trains at Benny the Jet's Martial Arts School!

That's just plain well-rounded!

I think John Cusack is ace.

I like most of his films and if not the film itself I like his performances.

Standout films are Hi Fidelity and Grosse Point Blanke for me.

Totally agree with  Shool on this. After Hi Fidelity and Grosse Point Blank, how can you not like the guy.

I would say the starter of this thread has not seen enough Cusack films to really form such a view.  But a few points to be made, to start of which John Cusack  has been in some of the more daring Hollywood/Indie projects of the last 20 Years and hasn't been afaird to change his pretty boy looks to do it(see BJM) you also shouldn't forget his part in something like The Cradle Will Rock a very over looked master piece from recent years.  Like many of the great leading man he is reserved but within that does a awful lot, for example very few could pull off a Performance like High Fidlety where he suffers for most of the film in a reather unlikeable way and yet by the end you still care about his character.  Cusack is also an actor who will make a poor film better by his involvement.  And finally when you consider he started out in those John Hughes style films in the 80's and really involved into more adult roles and is still going strong now the guy is kinda timeless.

Trailer for his new film, War Inc. HERE.

(It's a not-really sequel to Grosse Pointe Blank)

For the record, I think he's great.

Don't forget his great performance in the best teen romance comedy of all time (IMO) 'The Sure Thing'. He just comes across a thoroughly likeable chap and what's wrong with that?

Seconded. I actually really enjoyed that. film overall. It was a very solid, refreshing, and genuilely chilling horror movie which he carried on his own charisma. I was watching Grosse Pointe Blank last night and that film is absolutely brill. He was terrific in it.

He seems to come across as an articulate, intelligent individual with a very 'guy next door' appeal and seems to have a natural talent and slightly quirky charisma which makes him very likable. Acting seems to come very naturally to him and his co stars always say that he'll play every take diffeently and is a great improv.

He also has great music taste and seems like a guy you want to have a drink with.

I quite like the sound of him and Sam Jackson in the same film, sound like a fun pairing.  Say Anything is one of my favorite early Cusack films.  Funny enough the first thing I saw him in was Midnight in the Golden of Good and Evil, which I wasn't too keen on and didn't think much to him in.  But since then I've been convented, really like Grifters aswell.

what do you mean he doesn't stand out in High Fidelity. he carries the entire film on his own. he's the lead role and he's great in it!?!?

I can only agree, although that was the film which really bought Jack Black to my attention as comic actor in some ways he stole the film.  But for me it's a fine character piece.  The only thing to add about Cusack is that recently he has slipped into a run of poorer films, but hopefully he'll get back on track soon.

Good Cusack films: Say Anything, Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity, Serendipity
Poor Cusack film: American Sweethearts (part of ensemble cast)
Obviously quite a few rom coms, appears in other genres also.  He does seem to project a similar persona in many of his films, but so do other stars.

I love him, I've seen the sure thing too many times to count. His outstanding in Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity.  His one of the few actors I'll watch a film I don't fancy just because his in it.

Jack Cusack is a great actor, with many good films. The Thin Red Line, High Fidelity and 1408 are just a few.

High Fidelity is SO cool, he even manages to not get overshadowed by Jack Black, no mean feat. Not many actors can pull off the 'to camera' character acting but you wish you were in the pub with him at all times!

It really looks as if the OP is the only one that has anything truly negative to say about John Cusack, who is, as many others are saying a very talented, likeable actor.

I actually read an article once where he stated (this was some time ago) that he only really liked 10 of the films he had made. I can only remember reading High Fidelity, but his performance in High Fidelity and the film itself alone are two great things to have on your CV.

And although 1408 wasn't spectacular, Cusack was very good in it, made the film watchable. The same can be said for Identity.

Also his cameo in Stand By Me was well done. It really made you feel for Gordy.
