Wasn't this being turned into a film a few months/years back? What happened there, did it die off? That'd be a real shame.

according to his blog/some reports there has been some sort of personal reason/tragedy he hasn't finished the next book...i havent looked for a while so there might be more info by now. The "prequel" which was meant to be released last year has never even seen the light of day. Quite dissapointed actually

He's just posted the Prologue to the new book on his website.
http://www.scottlynch.us/excerpts.html

The rumours I heard was that he submitted a full manuscript, which was all about Sabetha and didn't feature Locke at all. So his publisher rejected it. He's since been dragging his heels about a new version. As the twitter announcement for the prologue went up today 'm hoping it won't be too long to wait.

I'm re-reading the first book now and still loving it.

Quite a bold route to take if he was leaving Locke out, but sabetha needed to come in at some point and maybe he just wanted to give her a proper backstory, like he did with Locke in the first book. Fingers crossed it wont be long then.

Just read a couple of pages of prologue...nice to see the Thiefmaker and Shade's Hill back

Although it will be a brave move to leave out Locke I love the way he can very quickly create characters you care about. I'm sure Sabetha would be just as interesting and you wouldn't even realise Locke was missing.

It might also be quite wise, now that I've thought about it...how much of Locke's scheming could he do without retreading similar ground? I think  Locke might be reduced to the flashback chapters this time round, with Sabetha's tale being the main focus, eventually leading up to her meeting with Locke and Jean at the end.

Mind you Locke should be dead by now after the end of the last book.....

While we're all waiting patiently for Book 3 of the Gentleman Bastard sequence, has anyone else started reading Lynch's online serial adventure "Queen of the Iron Sands"?  It seems to be a slightly feminist slant on the old john Carter of Mars tales, and makes for pretty interesting reading so far (2 chapters have been published so far, with a new one to be added on a daily basis).

You can check it out here: http://www.scottlynch.us/ironsands.html

That definitely sounds interesting, letting us get to know Sabetha on her own before joining up with Locke and Jean again.

If that. On his Livejournal, he explained how he's been suffering from depression and panic attacks:

http://scott-lynch.livejournal.com/

I don't know how his personal problems have affected The Republic of Thieves, if it's finished, stalled at a late stage, or whatever.

apparently its at the publisher, at the editing stage...or something.... It will have been 4 years since book two. A helluva long wait. I hope that Scott Lynch gets over his depression and gets better, because the first two books were so full of promise, I would hate it if the proposed series didnt finish...but his health is more important

There's an interesting post here from Scott Lynch about suffering with depression. He promised a few more posts this week including something a bit more concrete about the latest book.

You really need to rectify that swords - it's pretty much the best fantasy novel of the last 5 years!

Ah, ok, I bought it on a whim whilst travelling, having not heard of it and thinking it would be a bit rubbish but entertaining. Interesting to see it has a fanbase.

I'm going to read the two again I think. I loved both of them. I'll hopefully have a Kindle by then as when I looked out my copy of Locke Lamora, it was falling to bits. I read it on holiday a couple of year ago and forgot it was nearly ruined

The thing that bothers me is that they have been giving release dates for about 18 months now, obviously the authors battles with depression havent helped, but apparently the finished drafts were handed to publishers at the start of the year (I think) so this might just possibly be the real thing. Fingers crossed anyway.

He's been a bit more prolific on twitter recently, I forgot I followed him until his tweets started appearing a few months ago. Hopefully we will see this book soon, the first two were brilliant.

I recently read and loved this and am about to start on Red Seas Under Red Skies. Can't wait, cheers to sharky for the recommendation in another thread (also love the 1st First law book by Abercrombie so thanks for that as well, I'll also be starting Perdido Street Station after this on your recommendation, let's see if you get a hat-trick ).
