So, I've had a rather interesting conversation with a friend about Troma films and his thoughts. Let's say he doesn't think very highly of them. His thought's were:

"Troma tries too hard to be obscure and grab the viewers attention. They try and go against the 'normal' film rules and take things to the extreme. The plots are stupid and pointless and it focuses too much on sex to grab the viewers attention. I say fair play to them on making low budget movies, but is this what we really want to see? Because if it was I'm sure it'd be hitting our cinemas right now"

So... What are your thoughts? Troma - hit or miss?

It’s hard to slag off Troma movies. They’re shite, but they’re made to be shite. Some of the toxic avenger stuff is fun, but I’d struggle to sit through a whole one. Been years since I’ve seen one I grew out f them in my teens. Most of them are harmless fun they do veer into distasteful too often for comfort.

They are REALLY low budget shlock sci-fi horror movies by a guy called Lloyd Kaufman, with titles like Toxic Avenger, Nuke’em high and Tromio and Juliet

Class of Nuke'em High i own on DVD for no choice of my own, my mum bought me this really terrible low bridget horror Box set a few years ago for Christmas.

so true. I personally seem them as a teens boy film to have a little fun/laugh over. But I know people who take them fair too seriously, and one person who practicually uses them as low budget porn (bit gross ) I give them credit because as far as low budget films go trying to be so bad on purpose they've got it spot on. And there are some which are actually quite funny and amusing, but it always seems there's things in there that are totally not relevent.

Also another question, Troma movies are obviouslly aimed at a young male audience, but I'd like to hear some views from girls. I know that my boyfriend loves Troma movies, but watching them with him always makes me feel extremely uncomfortable.

 Actaully i have seen a good Troma film a Vampire film called Def by Temptation which feature Samuel L Jackson no less

I like Tromas so shit its good attitude anyway heres to them

 Mostly watchable crap (only once though) but Combat Shock deserves praise.If you've never seen or heard of it seek it out (don't ask for it at Blockbusters though). Seems a strange film for Troma since 99% of what they release is badly acted crap. Just find it and watch it, it will get under your skin and stay with you for ages!

it always seems they try far too hard, and because it's so forced there's no comedy there. To me it's just an excuse to perv at some girls and mess around. I might be completely wrong and might have just pissed off alot of people, but I've seen a fair few low budget movies and seen some with so much better plots

Yeah i don't really like them or judge them in the same way i would other films.  But some are quite amusing as a one off.

Really? Troma as an occasional guilty pleasure (getting to be an overused phrase) is fair enough. But I think your situation is unique, the kind of guys who love troma don't tend to have girlfriends.

Troma actually has a fairly solid cult following, particularly among fans of Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Anyone who wants to know more about Troma or Kaufman (who's actually a super intelligent and canny businessman and, apparently, a very nice guy) would do well to read this:

oh I agree, there is a huge fan following and without them I guess we wouldn't have had the talents of Trey and Matt and of course Cannibal: The Musical (which I totally love) and I give high credit to Lloyd for how much he as achieved. I have that book and the dvd set to go with it (well not mine, my boyfriends) so my house is packed with Troma stuff.

Some of the films are good and quite funny, but I still think there are parts that are so not needed in order to make it a good film, like random lesbian sex scenes that have nothing to do with the plot.

I actually know quite a few girls who are fans of Troma as well, and they seem to love the movies, but still feel that it's too much of a male dominated world. Though with films focusing on gay males, such as Killer Condom etc etc, there's still not enough to make it an 'all rounder' (if that makes sense)

it's obvious they are made for teenage boys little fantasies, with the added bonus of some blood and guts.

My boyfriend, being a huge Troma fan, once made me watch Tromeo & Juliet in the first few times I ever went and stayed with him - now that is romantic...not! lol

Make Your Own Damn Movie is a great read and one that filmmakers alike should check out. Troma are a great little production company (with the South Park guys having actually made a film for them in their early days)

Not only are they great entertainment but great confidence boosters for aspiring filmmakers that show you don't need money to make a film and that potentially you could do better

You’re right about Kaufman, any interviews I’ve seen he comes across as a nice guy who loves what he does and has a canny ability at PR.
 
As for Parker and Stone, I thought Cannibal the Musical was the least Troma like movie of the lot. I don’t think the Southpark boys fitted with the Troma house style at all. Also I thought the movie was shite (sorry) . I tried to watch it twice,figured I liked some Troma stuff and was a big South Park fan so this should be good but I was bored stupid.
 
I’ve nothing against Troma, it’s fun throwaway stuff. But I think there is a difference between enjoying something and loving it, enjoying Troma is fine, but loving it past your teens….dunno….just think it’s one of those things you should grow out of.

The thing about Troma is that they're canny enough to know they're audience and everything they make is geared up towards that audience.  They're not going to suddenly turn round and say "we've made our trash, now we can make our Schindler's List".  So it's not intended for you or I, but it is a very clever business enterprise.  The first rule of any business is know your audience/market and they do that better than anyone.  It's why they're still going whereas so many low budget production companies with delusions of grandeur fall by the wayside.

Gotta love 'em. They've weathered every storm that has knocked little indie studios reeling. Getting picked up by Troma is still a good way for an indie flick to get publicity, (if not any money whatsoever, but Lloyd is refreshingly upfront about this), and the in-house product is somewhat variable but usually fairly entertaining.

The parts that 'aren't needed to make a good film', such as random lesbian sex, are certainly required to guarantee international sales and the survival of the company and are one of the reasons that Troma are the longest running independent studio in the world.

And Lloyd's a great bloke.

And both his books rock.

But 'Terror Firmer' is still fucking awful.

Hell, Troma is just... stupid fun. That's its seal. They are meant to be stupid, lighthearted, full of dumb blondes and gratitous nudity and gore. That's what you'll get and is often (at least for me) preferable at the swarm of pretentious crap that we are mostly exposed to. Anyways, a dose while in stupidity mood only from time to time is recommended. No wonder why being constantly exposed to it makes it boring.

Kauffman knows what he does. He's also pretty often spotted making cameos.

Had anyone seen this?



Not at all Troma movie, but Kauffman appears in it and so does Debbie Rochon, one of the Troma icons. Really good movie (again, at least for me) with one of the most terrible scenes ever put on film (and no, it's not that one)

Heard nothing but good stuff about Nowhere Man, (although I'm sure that's not the poster I'd seen before), but it hasn't actually crossed my path yet. I'm sure it will do before too long; I think there's a law, or something

isn't that the point though, if they were such great movies they wouldn't need to show such material as this to get attention... I have no disresepct to Lloyd and his team and for the success they have, it's just there are far more greater b-movies/low budget films, that do not result to this stuff to get attention...and if so not this extreme.

And according to my boyfriend TERROR FIRMER is the best troma movie, I quote from a thread he posted on Total Film

"Terror Firmer, its almost the perfect exploitation, comedy, horror, gore, sex, film-within-a-film in the world"

To be honest, if I wanted to watch a stupid 'horror' movie with too much blood and comedy I'd be quite happy watching Evil Dead 1 & 2, maybe I'm just some loser girl who doesn't like watching busty blondes being thrust into my face at every single chance there is, and yes, if I dont want to watch this kind of thing I shouldn't watch films like that, but it's in alot of horror movies nowadays...

...and let's be honest, horror movies aren't based on a reality, but if you was in a house and surrounded by flesh craving zombies would the first thing on your mind really be to have sex on the kitchen table?

sometimes pretentious crap is good, and that might be why it makes £10million plus in cinemas.

but what I am talking about is people taking Troma VERY seriously. It's fine for a laugh and piss take and the 'girl getting fucked by a pickle' giggles, but to take it seriously you have to have the mental age of 11 and on the verge of hitting puberty. I'm not saying I dislike Tromas or Tromas movies, each to their own at the end of the day, but people who take Troma with their last single breath quite frankly scare me...

There are thousands of thousands of truly great, thoughtful indie movies that don't use such material. The vast majority of them don't get distributed and nobody ever sees them, so they don't get any attention whatsoever. Under 1% of indie features get a distribution deal anywhere close to what Troma offer, and some of the 'lost' flicks are masterpieces. You can't pay the rent reliably for 30 years by releasing thoughtful movies that might strike a chord with a minority; stick to boobs, blood and beasts and you might stand a chance.

Troma movies aren't great movies by any stretch, any more than a Peperami is great cuisine. They're a reliable brand and you know what you're getting (to a degree) when you watch one.

Personally, I love and support the brand for what they represent. And because Lloyd's a true one-off.

I've read both his books more than once.

I only actually sit through the movies once in a blue moon, though; Jesus, even I have limits...

Right, misskatielou was my ex, and I feel like I should defend myself from this. She makes me sound like some sort of rabid Troma fanboy, which of course I am not. I love Troma to the ends of the earth... But take it seriously? Watch it for some bizarre titilation? Force her to watch them? These are all big "No's" (not to be confused with big nose).

I loved Troma films for all the right reasons, the writing talent was always there (who can deny James Gunn is a brilliant genre writer?), Lloyd's direction is generally great (who wouldn't be after the wealth of experience he has endured), the acting is sometimes good, the gore effects are fantastic on a budget (and sometimes are made deliberatly bad, just to Tromatize the movie further), and mostly they are funny as hell. Who can deny the comedy of a New York cop becoming a Kabuki based superhero? Or a geeky cleaner becoming a radioactive hero? Or a (spoiler) crazed hermaphrodite with a pickle fixation sabotaging a Troma set? I could go on.

Am I defending Troma a little bit too much? Or am I feeling so indignant and angry that the girl I "loved" felt the need to start this thread (while we were still together) without discussing the issues she had with Troma with me rather than on some shitty forum (I'm TF all the way). The very same ex-girlfriend who in the early days of our relationship (remember when she said I made her watch Tromeo And Juliet?), convinced me that she adored Troma films almost as much as I do.

Basically, this person who doesn't even post here anymore is a c*nt and if you see her on the street give her a punch from me, and call her a DVD thieving whorebag.

/rant.
