The two leads should be unknown or relatively unknown. But not like the Luna Lovegood child.

What's the deal with the Luna Lovegood child?

She just looked so false in the photo and for the auditions they said they wanted someone natural but her hair so bleached it was yellow.

I'm very scared about this film but I guess that's natural when a book you love is adapted... I don't really like the idea of Josh Holloway as Lee Scoresby, he's way too young and good looking.

I agree. I nominate Chris Cooper:

However if they're going to leave religion out of the movie, they shouldn't bother with it at all. It's a pity Hollywood doesn't have the balls to go against religious conservatism.

Not sure about this - the book were good, well, the first 2 were. Spyglass was bloated and unnecessary. What I heard was that they've got rid of the actually god character, but not the idea of the 'evil church'.

isn't there any news yet? no casting or when principle photography will start? if this is going to be released nov. 2007, they need to start...now!!
And Pullman can't be keeping that close a watch if he let them take out religious references. i hope it's true that they at least keep an 'evil church', otherwise what will the movie be about? Lyra battling eevil multi national corporations across parallel universes!

Paul Bettany as Asriel. I don't think he has that kind of gravitas and see him suiting Metatron more.
And i hope the 'strong' nicole kidman rumour is true!

Well, Nicole Kidman has been officially cast as Mrs. Coulter. It's definately a step in the right direction, although if the religious aspect has been removed, I really don't see the point of the adaptation.

Here's some other casting news.

Dakota Richards has been cast in the role of Lyra Belaqua. I couldn't find any pictures online.

Ian McShane will provide the voice for armoured polar bear Iorek Brynison.

Clare Higgins has been cast as gyptian Ma Costa.

I was under the impression it's not even really referred to as being a church, at least in the drafts Weitz did before he bottled out of it. It's been a while since I've read the books, but the Authority isn't actually God in HDM anyway, is he?

"The Authority" was the first being created from Dark Matter i.e he was the first angel in the universe to become self aware. When other beings became conscious, "The Authority" told said that he had created them, and thus they began to worship him as a god. However, "The Authority" appointed the angel Metatron (who was once human) as his next in command. The Metatron longed for more power and imprisoned "The Authority", who was now extremely old and frail, in a crystal prison.  So "The Authority" is "God" in the eyes of The Church, but The Metatron is the one that's in control - or something.

Oh, cheers for that, Maria So, I was right, the Authority isn't God, as most people would think of him, in the sense of being the creator of the Universe. Just the guy who wrote the Bible then.

I don't see why they have to change the church the bad guys in the book to ssomething else in the film, it doesn't mean that the real church is evil its a book. Always amercians get so up tight when anything makes the church something other than it is.

What's with calling it the golden compass when the northern lights the original book title do they think the northern lights is not good enought and i'm tired of this american fear of casting god in a bad light when its only a book.

Sigh... pictures are up of Nicole Kidman on location... and she's blonde. I know that's such a little thing to get annoyed about, but hey, if they gave Ron black hair in the HP films I'm sure there'd be uproar.

Check out http://www.bridgetothestars.net/ for the pictures.

She looked fine as a brunette in Birthday Girl. Seriously, I know I shouldn't get annoyed over something like hair colour, but I don't see how they couldn't have easily made her a brunette. I'm pretty iffy about Daniel Criag too. Great choice for Serafina Pekkala though. Eva Green will do her proud.

It will be a good film even with the small changes they've made apart from the name of the film. I can see nicole kidman as mrs coultier but i can't see the girl who plays as her, i wonder who'll they get to play Will in the subtle knife.

Looking forward to this film.  I loved the 1st book; h8d the 2nd and the 3rd was all over the place IMO.  I'm not surprised that they've taken out the religious references (probably scared of alienating Middle America).  It'll be interesting to see how the adapt it, the books are sooooooo complex but real interesting.  I hope they have the talking bear in this movie.  Sorry i cannot remember his name; i read the books years ago.  Oh and the witches (remember the witches in the first book?).

Thats actually quite good. I like Sam Elliot but when reading it, never thought of Scoresby as an older chap. Whetting my appetite even more now.

Philip Pullman said that when he went on set and saw Sam Elliot it was exactly as he'd pictured him. But I'm with you KennyM - I always imagined him younger, but I'm sure he will be amazing

That would be Iorek Byrnison and he'll be voiced by Nonso Anozie. Iofur Raknison will be voiced by Ian McShane.

I've just found a picture of Dakota Blue Richards who's playing Lyra Belaqua. It's a pretty good likeness for the character in the book:
