I genuinely don't get it - what's respectful or sympathetic about watching someone sob in pain and intruding on private grief? It seems to be creating an excuse for media voyeurism - oh, but people want to sit in front of something that private to respect it? That just baffles me.

And ditto on Steffols on the papers - I was really surprised at how distastefully provocative The Guardian's was.

That isn't what I meant but I get your point but aren't we a little far down the road for this argument? Media voyeurism is nothing new, I'm not saying it's right but today's events have happened many times before, where do you possibly start with this kind of thing? Although it should be noted his stepfather actually did a very commendable job of reading out a simple and sweet statement from the family thanking people for their support whilst holding it together.

The whole handling of this horrible incident by the press has been scandalous. I spent the whole of Thursday trying to scan papers without having to look at that horrible picture on the front of ALL the papers, not just the redtops. When did a photo like that become acceptable on the frontpage of all the papers? If I was a kid (and The Sun is constantly priding itself on being a 'family' paper), I would be utterly terrified of that. My workmate and I both commented that we weren't comfortable looking at that picture, but with every other customer buying newspapers, what choice did we have?

I shouldn't have been, but I still found myself shocked about how casual the media were about that. Blithely reproducing images of men covered in blood while the man they killed was lying in the background was in unbelievably poor taste. I felt so sorry for that guys friends and family having to see that everywhere.

Somehow MIB3 got decent reviews and made $600 million+ at the Box Office. After Earth does look rubbish from the trailer I got the impression it was all part of a simulation or something…

I was really enjoying Graham Norton show.

And then Selena Gomez turned up.

Was that the strange looking woman who was singing from behind all that hair and plastered on make up? I zoned out a little bit after Carlton made an appearance.

I have to agree the trailer for after Earth looks absolutely dire. One of those father sons bonding rubbish things with bad CGI thrown in for good luck.

I'm starting to get slightly nervous about the bathroom refurbishment we're getting done in our house in 2 weeks.

Most of the stuff around the house I've been able to do myself, and this is the first time we've need to get people in to do the work (plumbers, electricians, tilers) and the logistics of it all is unnerving me. We'll be moving out of the house while they come in and do the work (they're all vouched for by my father in law as entirely trustworthy), but trying to organise the order in which they arrive and do their bit is a nightmare. Do I have to do that? Ring them individually and say "can you come on the 1st, 2nd and then back on the 6th 'cause the plumber is coming from the 3rd to the 5th?"

Unless you have someone else managing it, pretty much.

You're very fortunate to have someone vouched for as reliable though. We need to get one of ours done pretty soon and I'm not sure where to start. We wouldn't be moving out, I work at home most of the time. I'm trying to work out how much I can do myself tbh. As it's just replacement rather than a new install, I think it's vaguely possible.

You could ask your father in law first - if he can vouch for them, they might have worked together before and already know how to liase with each other?

It's what I do for a living!

You need honesty, that's all. Order of logistics should be vaguely as such:- (assuming it's an average sized bathroom)

Plumber rip out and first fix - no more than a couple of days
Electrician first fix - no more than a day
Plasterer/plasterboarding - depends whether you need it
Tiler - floors/walls (this can be done and finished in one sitting)
Plumber - second fix (sanitary ware)
Electrician - second fix (lights etc)

That's only a rule of thumb. As Elab said above, if they all know each other, the odd phone conversation between the various trades should help a smooth installation.
All I'll say is give all the various trades their own time. Don't get plumbers and electrician and tillers all trying to do their job on the same day (even the old "it'll only take me half a day" might make you think you can squeeze someone in the afternoon, but don't be fooled. It won't happen )

I'd say also that if you are doing the decorating yourself, do this after the plastering (if needed) It's far easier to tosh paint around without tiles/sanitary ware fitted, so this might be a way to keep the logistical side easier. All assuming you can be without a bathroom for a couple of weeks.
Just ask the plumber how long he'll need for first fix, same with the electrician, same with the plumber, then organise them on the relevant days (and the golden rule is let all the trades know when the others are coming!)

I'm thinking I had a great long weekend. Plenty of gardening, golf and home renovations.
Followed by Glastonbudget, where my 2 daughters were backing singers for "Oasish". And despite not being an Oasis fan, they were really good, a good crowd of about 10 thousand and I managed to blag it to the side of the stage so I watched half the performance from the wings.
The kids were cacking it going on, but came off stage like rock stars.
I played in a band for 7 years and peaked at about 400 in the audience. My daughters do it once and get an encore, mosh pit and crowd surfers. Life's not fair.

I don't do Twitter so haven't a clue what you are talking about

Just one more thing. If you sort the logistics of the first week out, you may end up having the plastering done on a Friday. This is perfect!
It'll dry over the weekend so the tiles can be put on the wall on the Monday. Again, rule of thumb. Doesn't always work, but you can plan for that outcome. Get a dehumidifier in there and the plaster will dry quicker.
Don't paint or tile on wet walls, you'll only have future problems (this isn't Changing Rooms, this is your home - the programme makers should be shot for letting people believe things can be done quickly and to a decent standard. Absolutely awful and so, so wrong. They should bring out a new programme called Changing Rooms - 2 Years Later so people can see how fucking awful it looks. Sorry, rant over )

You used to be able to rate posts on here, I thought?

Anyway, interviews in the office for the (internal) appointment of a senior supervisor. Understandably things are a bit tense, and yesterday the candidates were given a 'crisis' scenario that they had to respond to. Personally, I think the interview process would be a bit more relaxed if the scenario was a zombie outbreak, but alas, the idea fell on deaf ears.

You'd get on well with my brother   He's got his own building firm and is forever ranting about these sorts of programmes.

Are you employing all these people seperately to do the work jc?  Only asking because if my brother is employed to do a job (example a bathroom refit or build) then as the original quote/work goes through him it is up to him to then manage the other guys and when they should do their bit.

You and me both.

Many thanks Jonson. That helps tremendously.

We've been told two weeks all in, which we thought was pretty long but chances are they'll all be done well before that.

They all knew that there'd be others working between the days they each do their own work (does that make sense?) and gave me their quotes accordingly.

Hopefully that means it won't go up any more.

You're welcome.

Think 3 weeks. You'll not be disappointed then.
I'd tell a client 3 weeks. If it's 2 weeks and 1 day, they love me.
If I tell them 2 weeks, and it's 2 weeks and 1 day, they hate me.
